Olinguito the new species of mammal

Amid the misty treetops and giant tomato-size figs in the Andean cloud forests, the researchers spotted the animal the first night.

“It sort of bounced around the trees almost like a monkey,” zoologist Roland Kays said, “doing its thing, eating the figs.”

The small, bushy-tailed, rust-colored furry mammal they named the olinguito was a rare find — the first new carnivore species found in the Western Hemisphere in 35 years.

Its discovery is a story that goes back a decade ago to efforts by Smithsonian zoologist Kris­tofer M. Helgen to count the number of species of the olingo, a member of the raccoon family. At the Field Museum of Chicago, what he found in a drawer stopped him dead in his tracks.see more..

Darren Young comes out as gay

Everyone knows that professional wrestling is scripted, but there didn’t appear to be anything bogus about one WWE star’s acknowledgement that he is gay.

Darren Young — real name: Fred Rosser — became the first active professional wrestler to come out, stunning a TMZ cameraman at the Los Angeles airport with the news after the paparazzo asked him if a gay athlete could make it in the WWE or MMA.

"Absolutely, look at me," Young said. "I'm a WWE Superstar and to be honest with you, I'll tell you right now, I'm gay. And I'm happy. I'm very happy."

"To be honest, I don't think [my sexuality] matters," Young added. "Does it matter? Does it matter to you? Does it change what you think about me?”

When the cameraman — who said he was “flabbergasted” at the news — described the proclamation as Young’s “coming out,” Young seemed to downplay the significance of the news. See more..

Teresa and Joe Guidance plead not guilty to federal fraud charges

RealityTV star Teresa Giudice and her hot-tempered hubby returned to court Wednesday and pleaded not guilty to federal fraud charges.

Standing silently in the courtroom, Teresa and Joe let their lawyers do the talking for them.

The stress appears to be getting to Teresa, who looked as if she hasn’t missed too many meals since being indicted last month.

When their brief court appearance was over, “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” stars walked out holding hands — and with grim expressions on their faces.

“They were relieved they could stand up in court and plead not guilty through their attorneys,” Joe Giudice’s lawyer, Miles Feinstein, said after the couple left the Newark federal courthouse.

Teresa, dressed in a khaki-colored pants suit and her dark hair up in a bun, kept her cool as photographers closed in.See more..

It would drive SteveJobs nuts to know that the new movie about his life has all the sex appeal of a PowerPoint presentation. It isn’t only that PowerPoint has become synonymous with the dry, dreary, droning of corporate meetings or that it’s an application developed by Microsoft, itself a favorite target of Jobs. (“The only problem with Microsoft,” he said, “is they just have no taste.” 

Also: “They just make really third-rate products.”) Jobs, who died in 2011 at 56 from complications of pancreatic cancer, thought of himself as an artist, one who, in talking about the design of the Macintosh, said, “Great art stretches the taste, it doesn’t follow tastes.”

The historical record is all that’s stretched in “Jobs,” which stars Ashton Kutcher and was directed by Joshua Michael Stern. Compression and omissions are part of any biography. So it’s to be expected that a two-hour movie about one of the most important public figures in recent times leaves out a lot, including famous feuds, forgotten colleagues and even significant business ventures. 

The point isn’t that there are gaps; the point is what and who have been left out. It’s understandable that a movie that concentrates on Jobs’s earlier years would overlook his involvement with Pixar, which he capitalized in 1986; given the filmmakers’ difficulties dealing with his difficulties it’s also understandable that they slide over a little player called the Xerox Corporation. Tom Brady escape because of serious injury

The New England Patriots got a scare Wednesday when quarterback Tom Brady hurt his left knee during a pile up in a joint scrimmage with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Wednesday.

During full team work, Buccaneers defensive end Adrian Clayborn bull-rushed Patriots left tackle Nate Solder into the side of Brady's left leg as Brady was throwing. All three players hit the turf. Brady rocked backward on the ground holding his knee. He was, however, able to get up and limp off the field under his own power.

He returned for a few more plays before talking with coach Bill Belichick and leaving the field for good with trainers.

An MRI on Brady's knee showed no structural damage, a person with knowledge of the exam told USA TODAY Sports. The person spoke on the condition on anonymity since the Patriots did not publicly reveal the results. Brady is considered day-to-day with a mild sprain.

Brady tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in the 2008 season opener and missed the rest of the season, but he's played every game since then.

UPS Jumbo Cargo Plane Crash that killed 2 pilots

Authorities say they have not yet recovered the black boxes to determine why a UPS jumbo cargo plane crashed early Wednesday morning just outside a Birmingham, Ala., airport, killing the two pilots.

NTSB member Robert L. Sumwalt said at a news conference Wednesday that because the tail of the aircraft is still smoldering, investigators haven't been able to gain access yet to the cockpit-voice and flight-data recorders, but that investigators will be on the scene for a number of days.

Sumwalt says a preliminary investigation of the crash indicates the pilot and co-pilot did not make any distress calls prior to impact.

A UPS spokesman confirmed to MyFoxAL.com that the plane was a UPS A-300 Airbus, tail number N155UP, with two crew members aboard. The flight originated in Louisville, Ky., and crashed upon its approach to Birmingham-Shuttles worth International Airport before dawn.

The plane crashed in an isolated field outside the airport's perimeterfence and a white plume of smoke was seen rising from the site. Teams of emergency crews responded to the crash.

The UPS said it is in the process of notifying the shippers of all the packages aboard the flight.

Humble Bundle Raises Money for 5 Charities

Electronic Arts and the Humble Bundle crew have partnered up to let gamers buy six EA games for whatever price they want. Paying more than the average purchase price (currently $4.73) unlocks two bonus titles. In a special twist, 100% of the proceeds go to charity - no money is going to EA or to Humble Bundle Inc.

All eight games are redeemable via EA's online service Origin. Steam keys are also included for all the games besides DeadSpace 3 and Battlefield3.

The normal humble bundle sliders that let purchasers determine what amount they want to give to developers, humble organizers and charities have been replaced with five charity-only sliders. Purchasers can contribute to Human Rights Campaign, Watsi, SanFrancisco AIDS Foundation, American Cancer Society, and American RedCross.

When drafting this story the amount raised for charity was already over $90,000 and has since grown to over $250,000.
