Hands on with Nintendo 2DS

When covering video games, sometimes judging with your hands is more important than with your eyes or ears.

It's hard not to review the Nintendo 2DS -- launching Oct. 12 for $130 -- without seeming a bit puzzled. Forget that there's no 3-D capability (hence the 2DS name). This version of Nintendo's popular handheld ditches the clamshell design. So, instead of opening and closing the handheld as you would with 3DS and earlier DS models, the 2DS arrives with a slate form factor.

Nintendo offered a demo of the 2DS recently, featuring several games includingMario Kart, Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Luigi'sMansion: Dark Moon.

While the 2DS retains the same dual screens, the device feels lighter and thinner. With the hinges gone, the thumbstick, directional pad and face buttons have been moved up. Two larger shoulder buttons sit on top, while the mic has moved to the lower left. Also, the 2DS trades in the switch to turn wireless functionality on and off for a Sleep switch. See more...

Google's Nexus 4 Smartphone get $100 cheaper

Google’s Nexus 4 made a splash last fall simply because it was well-built and inexpensive, and yet it didn’t require a two-year contract with a wireless carrier. Now, it’s even cheaper.

The Nexus4 now costs $200 for the 8 GB model and $250 for the 16 GB model–a $100 price reduction from before.

 Those prices aren’t incredible if you’re used to buying your phones through major wireless carriers at subsidized prices, but compared to most unlocked phones, the Nexus4 is cheap. And it’s a decent phone, running the latest version of Google’s Android operating system.

Michael Buble welcome baby boy Noah

The pop singer posted a picture of his wife, actress Luisana Lopilato, and their son Noahon his Instagram account Tuesday. “Overjoyed and filled with gratitude at the arrival of our son NoahBublè,” the singer wrote. “Born this morning, August 27th at 2:26 am in Vancouver, Canada.”

Buble’srepresentative confirmed the birth.

The 37-year-old Canadian singer and the 26-year-old Argentine actress were married in 2011. The couple met in 2009 during a South Americanconcert tour.

Buble is a Grammy-winning pop singer who has sold millions of albums, including Crazy Love and 2011′s Christmas. Lopilato made her name as a model and in Argentine sitcoms and soap operas. See more...

Obama pays tribute to Martin Luther King Jr.

US President Barack Obama has paid tribute to Martin Luther King Jr - 50 years after he made his I Have a Dream speech.

The president addressed a crowd gathered in Washington DC for the 50th anniversary commemoration of the civil rights rally at which Martin Luther King Jr made his speech.

"Because they marched, city councils changed and state legislatures changed and Congress changed, and yes, eventually the White House changed," said Mr Obama.

Neil Armstrong is dead

Usually, those false Internet rumors about a famous someone's demise end with word trickling through social media that it's a hoax, or maybe even a statement directly from the celebrity that he or she is just fine, thank you very much.

But in the case of Tuesday's rumors that astronaut Neil Armstrong had died — well, Armstrong is still dead. The part that the Internet got wrong is when. Armstrong, the first man on the moon, passed away Aug. 25, 2012.

ABC News mistakenly sent out a tweet, now deleted, that said, "NeilArmstrong, First Man on the Moon, Is Dead," according to HollywoodLife.com.

ABC was intending to tweet a piece about his passing to honor the anniversary of his death, but it was attached to a more current video, which changed the timestamp on the story to Aug. 27 and made everything appear current. Srike on Syria would cause one on Israel

Iranian lawmakers and commanders issued stark warnings to the United States and its allies on Tuesday, saying any military strike on Syria would lead to a retaliatory attack on Israel fanned by “the flames ofoutrage.”

The warnings came against a backdrop of rising momentum among Western governments for a military intervention in the Syria conflict over what the United States, Britain, France and others have called undeniable evidence that President Bashar al-Assad’s forces used banned chemical weapons on civilians last week, killing hundreds.

Pretty Little Liar summer finale react

I’m shaking, and I’m pretty sure my neighbors just called the cops, because my reaction to the final 30 seconds of the Pretty Little Liarssummer finale involved a scream Marlon Brando would admire. You guys, it’s EZRA!EZRA is “A” or Red Coat or whatever, but basically, he’s all things wrong with the world (but he’s still so cute)! Let me backtrack:

The episode kicks off with Travis (aka the random guy who conveniently witnessed Hanna’s mom NOT kill Detective Wilden) having to identify Ashley in a line-up. He seems hesitant but is apparently successful, because all of the charges are dropped, and Ashley is free to go! Woohoo! Side note: Did that head nod between Caleb and Travis seem suspect? Did Caleb tip Travis off somehow?

Elsewhere, “A” is stepping up his/her game. Forget text messages. “A” prefers sending packages containing things like four magic eight balls that combine to make a full threat. The good news? Syrian hackers claim resposibility for disrupting Twitter and New York Times website

The New York Times and Twitter on Tuesday became the latest Americanmedia organizations to succumb to hacking attacks, in another series of disruptions apparently caused by the shadowy group known as the Syrian Electronic Army.

The SEA, which is aligned with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, asserted responsibility for disrupting access to the sites starting in the late afternoon. But neither the Times nor Twitter cited a specific source.

Little is known about the members of the SEA, but the group appears to be based in Syria, a country split by civil war and facing the threat of a military strike by the United States and its allies over the Assad government’s alleged use of chemical weapons. See more...

Aaron Henandez indicted for murder!

Former NewEngland Patriots tight end AaronHernandez was indicted Thursday on first-degree murder and weapons charges in the death of a friend whose bullet-riddled body was found in an industrial park about a mile from the ex-player's home.

The six-count grand jury indictment charges Hernandez with killing 27-year-old Odin Lloyd, a semi-professional football player from Boston who was dating the sister of Hernandez's girlfriend.

Hernandez, 23, pleaded not guilty to murder and weapons charges in June, and he is being held without bail.

He had a brief court appearance in Attleboro on Thursday afternoon.Afterward, his attorney Michael Fee said the defense was pleased to be on a path to a jury trial and was looking forward to testing the prosecution's evidence.

"There has been an incredible rush to judgment in this case," and the state doesn't have enough evidence to prove the charges, he said.

Hernandez last summer signed a contract worth $40 million but was cut by the Patriots within hours of his June 26 arrest, when police led the handcuffed athlete from his home as news cameras rolled. He could face life in prison if convicted. See more..

Antoinette Tuff hailed as Hero in Georgia school shooting

As the kids trooped back into the suburban Atlanta elementary school that was stormed by a gunman earlier this week, everyone was talking about Antoinette Tuff.

The bookkeeper, an eight-year veteran of the DeKalb County school district, talked suspect Michael Brandon Hill into surrendering after a brief standoff with police Tuesday afternoon. Faced with an armed 20-year-old who told her he was off his medication for a mental disorder, Tuff shared stories of heartbreak from her own life to helpcalm him down -- a recent divorce, a son with multiple disabilities.

Tuff was off Thursday as the students returned to Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy, recovering from a pre-scheduled surgery. But Principal Brian Bolden said he credited Tuff's quick thinking for avoiding what could have been a major tragedy.

"Her name, Antoinette Tuff, says everything about her," Bolden said. "Tough. She has always been that way from the first time I met her." See more...

Wentworth Miller comes out, declines invitation to Russia film fest

Wentworth Miller, best known for his role on "Prison Break," came out as a gay man in an open letter to the St. Petersburg International Film Festival. The fest invited him to attend, and although Miller cited ties to Russia and pleasant visits to the country in the past, he said no.

"As a gay man, I must decline," Miller wrote in his letter. "Iam deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment ofgay men and women by the Russian government.

The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly."

He signed the letter by asserting his membership in GLAAD, the Human Rights Campaign, and The Man Kind Project. GLAAD reps supported Miller's stance with their own statement:

"Wentworth's bold show of support sends a powerful message to LGBT Russians, who are facing extreme violence and persecution: you are not alone," GLAAD spokesman Wilson Cruz said in a statement. "As people from across the globe continue to speak out against Russia's horrific law, more celebrities and corporations should follow his courageous lead in openly condemning Russia's anti-LGBT law."

Bradley Manning sentenced to 35 years in Wikileaks case

Pte First Class Bradley Manning, 25, was convicted in July of 20 charges against him, including espionage.

In a statement read by his lawyer after the sentencing, Pte Manning said he had acted "out of love for our country".

His supporters have called on President Barack Obama to pardon the soldier or commute his sentence to time served.

PteManning will receive a credit against his sentence of about three and a half years, including time he has already served in jail and 112 days in recompense for the harsh conditions of his initial confinement.

His defence lawyer David Coombs said Pte Manning would first be eligible for parole in about seven years.

Prosecutors had asked for a 60-year sentence in order to send a message to future potential leakers, and Wikileaks called the 35-year sentence a "significant strategic victory".

Military prosecutors did not immediately comment.

In addition to the prison sentence, likely to be served at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, Judge Col Denise Lind sentenced Pte Manning to be demoted to private and dishonourably discharged from the US Army, and to forfeit his pay.

While stationed in Iraq in 2010, the junior intelligence analyst passed hundreds of thousands of battlefield reports and diplomatic cables to Wikileaks, the pro-transparency group headed by Julian Assange. see more...

Tesla Car roof broke in crush-test machine

As crash-test boasts go, Tesla is claiming a good one: The roof of its Model S electric sedan is apparently so strong that it broke a testing machine during its independent validation of its government crash-test scores.

Roof-crush strength was just one of the reasons that Tesla says its electric car just came up with a five-star rating in National Highway Traffic Safety Administration testing.

Actually, in its press release Tesla claimed "a new combined record of 5.4 stars," but there actually is no such government rating. The company said it figured that based on the complicated underlying data and calculations that go into the star ratings and are provided to the individual automakers.

But five stars is NHTSA's top rating and NHTSA issued this statement on the Tesla release without further comment: "The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is committed to improving safety on the nation's roadways. The agency's 5-Star Safety Ratings program is designed to provide consumers with information about the crash protection and rollover safety of new vehicles beyond what is required by Federal standards. One star is the lowest rating; five stars is the highest. More stars equal safer cars. NHTSA does not rate vehicles beyond 5 stars and does not rank or order vehicles within the starred categories."

Still, while other plug-in electric models have overall five-star ratings, Tesla's getting a perfect five stars in each of the three test areas that go into the overall rating is relatively rare.

The 2014 Ford Focus electric also is rated five stars overall and in side-crash testing, but four in rollover and frontal-crash testing. The 2014 Chevrolet Volt is rated five stars overall but has a four in frontal-crash testing. Nissan Leaf is rated four stars overall. See more..

Cronut Burger not for sale

Thirty-four people have reported symptoms of foodborne illness after eating at the Canadian National Exhibition, which has prompted an investigation and the precautionary closure of a vendor that had been selling cronut burgers at the annual fair.

Dr.Lisa Berger, an associate medical officer of health, told reporters Wednesday that Toronto Public Health was initially notified Tuesday night that paramedics were responding to "a number of people who became ill on site with foodborne illness."

Paramedics then treated 12 people and recommended five be taken to hospital. But Berger said the health unit has since received reports of "34 cases of persons who have reported symptoms of foodborne illness in relation to eating at the CNE."

Some of the people who became ill at the CNE told officials they had eaten at Epic Burgers and Waffles, which makes the trendy hamburger with a croissant-doughnut mix for a bun.
The food outlet has been closed as a precaution in the wake of the reports of illness. Berger said it was closed by the CNE, not Toronto Public Health. See more...

Charlie Hunnam in Fifty Shades of Gray film

Representatives for Pacific Rim star Charlie Hunnam have denied reports that the up-and-coming British actor is set to star as kinky billionaire Christian Grey in the adaptation of "mommy porn" literary sensation FiftyShades of Grey.

Variety reports that while Hunnam is on a list of possible contenders for Sam Taylor-Johnson's film, no final casting decision has been made. The studio, Universal, is said to be prepared to take its time over the process.Fifty Shades of Grey is due to debut in cinemas next August.

The story tells how Grey recruits a young virgin, Anastasia Steele, to be his sex slave. ELJames's infamous knee-trembler trilogy has sold more than 70m copies worldwide, and there has been furious speculation over who might play the business magnate and his lover. So far, no casting details have been revealed.

Hunnam, who made his name in the cult US TV show Sons of Anarchy(and long prior to that, the British children's series Byker Grove), is riding high after strong reviews and decent box office returns for Guillermo Del Toro's Pacific Rim. The sci-fi action movie has made headlines for achieving a likely sequel via an impressive $100m box office return in China, even though its tally of $98m in the US was considered something of a dud.

Lisa Robin Kelly Die

Actress Lisa Robin Kelly, best known for her role in That '70s Show, has died after years of battling drug addiction.

Her death was first reported by celebrity website TMZ.

Her manager said the 43-year-old had died in a rehab facility on Wednesday night.

"Unfortunately Lisa Robin Kelly passed away last evening,” Craig Wycoff told US media.

"Lisa had voluntarily checked herself into a treatment facility early this week where she was battling the addiction problems that have plagued her these past few years.

"I spoke to her on Monday and she was hopeful and confident, looking forward to putting this part of her life behind her. Last night she lost the battle."

Kelly rose to fame as Laurie Forman on That '70s Show, the hit sitcom that helped launch the careers of Ashton Kutcher, Topher Grace and MilaKunis.

Kelly's character was the older sister of Eric Forman, played by Grace.

The show ran from 1998 to 2006 but Kelly left in 2003.

Since then she was often in the news for her drug addiction and other problems. She was recently arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. See more..
