NBA Tip-Off: 6 Business Stories To Watch This Season

The NBA season gets started Tuesday night with a trio of games highlighted by a clash between the Derrick Rose-led Chicago Bulls and the two-time defending champion Miami Heat.

 Las Vegas has the Heat favored to win a third straight title with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Clippers and Bulls among the next set of favorites. The NBA has been on a roll in recent years thanks to a bevy of stars, success by big market franchises and the international appeal of the game.

 Total revenues for the league were expected to approach a record $5 billion last season. Here are the business stories we are tracking this season.

The four-time MVP is story 1a, 1b and 1c in today’s NBA. We have not seen the focus on one player in the NBA since Michael Jordan hung up his high tops for a second time in 1998 after his second three-peat with the Bulls. ESPN The Magazine devoted its entire NBA preview issue to all-things LeBron and it is hard to blame them.

 The immediate questions are whether James can lead the Heat to another title and win a fifth MVP (the record is six by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, while Jordan and Bill Russell each won five).

The bigger long-term question is where James will be playing next year. He is expected to exercise his early termination option in his contract to make him a free agent in the summer of 2014, setting up The Decision 2.0. 

Three years after James’ departure from Cleveland, the franchise value of the Cavaliers is down 9% and the value of the Heat is up 71%. James said he will not address his free agency during the season, but the Heat, followed by the Cavs are expected to be the leaders in the race for his services.

Uber is delivering kittens for National Cat Day

In honor of the venerated holiday National Cat Day, startup Uber is temporarily expanding past taxi-hailing to ... kitten deliveryservice.

Uber usually lets its app users order a taxi, black car or SUV to come pick them up at their current location. Tuesday's promotion added a "Kittens!" option to the list. (Yes, exclamation point included.)

For $20, Uber will deliver a kitten for you to snuggle for fifteen minutes -- and even throw in a few cupcakes to add to all the sugary sweetness. The service is available for only a few hours on Tuesday in Seattle, New York and San Francisco.

Uber, which partnered with Internet meme site Cheezburger for the kittenservice, will donate all of the fees to one animal shelter in each city,. Each of the kittens is available to adopt from the shelters: the Seattle Humane Society, New York's ASPCA and San Francisco's SPCA .

Magic Johnson says Lakers fans are 'spoiled,' 'tough season' ahead

Los Angeles Lakers fans are spoiled. Even the greatest Laker ever Magic Johnson believes this to be true. But that's not a pejorative way of classifying Lakers fans by any means. They've rooted for a team that has experienced nearly unparalleled success over their time in Los Angeles since coming over from Minneapolis in 1960.

They've won 11 championships since moving to LA and have rarely had rosters that didn't include some of the best and most exciting players in the NBA. Because of this consistency of talent, competitiveness, and excitement, it's easy to say Lakers fans may have a spoiled basketball experience than a lot of other fan bases.

Magic Johnson stated this during a radio interview on Tuesday before the Lakers opening night victory, saying the fans were in for a tough season ahead of them. With Kobe Bryant still waiting to come back from his Achilles' injury and an older veteran core that's supposed to drive the team to success, it makes sense that Lakers fans should probably brace for the worst.

Jonas Brothers: It's over for now

It looks like that "deep rift" among the Jonas Brothers has led to a breakup.

The boy band, which recently canceled a planned 19-show national tour following a disagreement over musical direction, is no longer a group.

"It's over for now," Kevin Jonas, 25, told People magazine, which first reported the news. His brother Joe, 24, called it a "unanimous decision.

The three decided to go their separate ways after Nick Jonas, 21, spoke up during an October 3 meeting, according to the magazine.

"I was feeling kind of trapped," Nick said. "I needed to share my heart with my brothers."

The Jonas Brothers skyrocketed to fame through the Disney Channel's "Camp Rock" movie series. They signed with Disney's Hollywood Records label in 2007, and their albums -- including solo projects -- have sold 20 million copies worldwide.

But in recent years, each brother has broken out with his own projects: Kevin and his wife, Danielle, have a reality show on E! and are expecting their first child. Joe has gone in a more adult direction with his music career, and both he and his brother Nick have released solo albums and expanded into acting.

No purity ring for this Jonas in new video

Rumblings that the band was in a pretty bad spot have grown louder over the past few weeks after a spokesman confirmed there was "a deeprift" within the pop group.

On October 17, their official Twitter account was deactivated, and Joe Jonas asked fans via his personal account on October 22 to "please hold while we get our s*** together."

The three worked together on new music earlier this year, releasing singles "Pom Poms" and "First Time," but one industry insider told People it could be "the beginning of the end."

Apple unveils lighter iPad Air

Thinner. Lighter. Faster. That's what Apple promises in its newest iPad, which also has a new name: the iPad Air.

The company rolled out the fifth generation of its market-leading tablet Tuesday. Among its new features, the iPad will weigh 1 pound, down from 1.4 pounds. It's 20% thinner and 28% lighter than the current fourth-generation iPad.

The iPad Air will have the same 9.7-inch screen as previous iPads and pack the same A7 processing chip that's in the iPhone 5S. That will make it 72 times faster than the original iPad, according to Apple Senior Vice President Phil Schiller.

Kim Kardashian, Kanye West engagement doesn’t faze Kris Humphries’ dad: ‘She’s stepping right into it all over again’

Kim Kardashian’s former father-in-law gave a scouting report of sorts Tuesday on Kim Kardashian’s prospects for matrimonial bliss following her baseball stadium engagement.

But William Humphries didn’t want to be negative.

“I don't really care, it's water under the bridge. But I wish her all best,” Humphries, the father of Kardashian's former hoopster hubby Kris Humphries, told the Daily News

Kardashian married his NBA star son in August 2011 in a lavish celebration filmed for TV, and then blindsided the power forward 72 days later with a Halloween divorce filing.

A judge formally severed the short-lived union just days before the reality TV temptress gave birth to her first child with rapper Kanye West last June.

West popped the question Monday night in San Francisco during an over-the-top extravaganza at AT&T Park complete with fireworks and a 50-member orchestra.

Apple's OS X Mavericks now available for free from the Mac App Store

Just as Apple promised, its OS X Mavericks update is now available as a digital download from the Mac App Store. The operating system upgrade weighs in at 5.29GB, so you'll want to set aside some time for the installation process. 

Thankfully, Apple is giving plenty of its existing customers the chance to move up to Mavericks at no cost.

 On stage during its event today, software chief Craig Federighi announced that Mavericks is a free download to users of OS X Snow Leopard and later.

 To get started with Apple's latest desktop OS, head to the Mac App Store now. Updated versions of the company's iWork and iLife suite of apps are also expected to be released before the day's end.

Kanye West fans devastated about cancellation of Sunday's Vancouver show

Superstar rapper Kanye West has cancelled his Vancouver tour stop Sunday night "due to unforeseen circumstances" and moved it to Halloween night.

The rescheduling of Sunday's show, which was set to feature budding superstar Kendrick Lamar, was announced by Rogers Arena staff Sunday just before 2:30 p.m. after rumours swirled around on Twitter earlier in the day that an equipment truck was stolen in Seattle the night before.

However, it was further speculated that the show was called off was because Kanye's extravagant set is a logistical nightmare for crew to set up and take down in two different cities within less than a day. These rumours could not be confirmed Sunday evening.

Fans are being asked to keep their tickets to the cancelled show, which will be honoured for the Halloween concert, according to the arena's news release.

Sunday's show would have been the second stop of the tour, which kicked off with West inviting a mock Jesus Christ on the stage to finish off his performance.

Bears lose Jay Cutler to injury, fall to Redskins 45-41

Josh McCown pulled on the gray jacket of his slim-fitting suit, tightened his navy tie and slid on his brown wingtip shoes without tying the laces. Jay Cutler had been on the Bears' team bus for 15 minutes, having been transported there by cart because of his injured groin. McCown, then, hurried off to complete the game-day duties of a Bears quarterback.

With the poise of an 11-year veteran, McCown explained to reporters his role in the Bears' 45-41 loss to the Redskins. In that 10-minute exchange, he epitomized a team that limped home dogged by uncertainty.

McCown was pleased by his teammates' effort, hopeful for some auspicious medical examinations this week and resigned to the fact his performance was not good enough to win Sunday.

Peyton Manning, Denver lose in his return to Indianapolis

Peyton Manning failed Sunday night in his first game against his former team.

All the 37-year-old ex-Indianapolis Colts quarterback can do now is hope for a second chance.

On a night when second-year quarterback Andrew Luck, Manning's successor in Indianapolis, threw for three touchdowns and ran for another, the Denver Broncos committed four turnovers and lost for the first time this season, 39-33.

"This is a game we need to learn from," Manning said. "We, I guess, had four turnovers and still somehow had a chance to win that game. I would have liked to have seen it go to a two-point game down there toward the end and see what would have happened, but it never quite got to that point. We certainly have to improve from this game, because we weren't as sharp, execution-wise, as we'd like to be."

"It's not real fun watching him," Luck said of Manning. "But he is something to watch."

'Reign' react: Teenagers go a courtin'

History buffs are sure to be disappointed by The CW getting into the politics of 16th century French court (Francis II of France was not so much a stud as he was sickly), but for those of us who are looking for an over-the-top costume drama by the people who brought you 90210, welcome to your new favorite show.

The premiere showcased Mary’s (Adelaide Kane) arrival at court, and — just like in high school — it’s hard to be the new girl. She meets up with her Anthropologie-dressed ladies in waiting, and awkwardly meets the Dauphin of France, Francis. (Toby Regbo)…and his hot half-brother Bash (Torrance Coombs), who looks like a Vampire Diaries castoff who already has an Oscar in smoldering.

There’s something rotten in the state of France: Seer Nostradamus has told Francis’ mother, Queen Catherine (Megan Follows), that the marriage between her son and Mary cannot happen, because Mary “will cost Francis his life.” (History spoiler alert: Francis’ future isn’t great.) But worrying about death is for the olds — the teenagers at court have Francis’ sister’s wedding party to attend!

Microsoft releases Windows 8.1 update

Microsoft released its long-awaited Windows 8.1 upgrade as a free download Thursday. It addresses some of the gripes people have had with Windows 8, the dramatically different operating system that attempts to bridge the divide between tablets and PCs.

Windows 8.1 still features the dual worlds that Windows 8 created when it came out last October. On one hand, it features a touch-enabled tile interface resembling what's found in tablet computers. On the other, there's the old desktop mode where the keyboard and mouse still reign. The update adds some new finger- and gesture-friendly shortcuts for touch-based apps, while restoring some respect for the desktop mode that a billion PC users have become accustomed to.

Ed Lauter dies at age 74

Veteran character actor Ed Lauter, whose long, angular face and stern bearing made him an instantly recognizable figure in scores of movies and TV shows during a career that stretched across five decades, died Wednesday. He was 74.

Lauter died of mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer most commonly caused by asbestos exposure, said his publicist, Edward Lozzi.

Whether he was an irascible authority figure, a brutal thug or a conniving con man, Lauter's presence made him all but impossible to miss in any film he was in. That was so even on those occasions when he was playing a character more bumbling than menacing, although menacing was clearly his forte.

He was the brutal prison guard who was Burt Reynolds' nemesis in the 1974 comedy-drama The Longest Yard and the sleazy gas station attendant in Alfred Hitchcock's last film, The Family Plot. In Death Wish 3, he was the violent cop who teams with Charles Bronson's vigilante to rid New York City's streets of criminals, not by incarcerating them but by killing them.

More recently he was the butler to Berenice Bejo's French ingenue in the 2011 Oscar-winning film The Artist. see more...

Eminem's homophobic 'Rap God' lyrics

Earlier this week, Eminem dropped “Rap God,” an epic six-minute cut from his highly anticipated The Marshall Mathers LP 2. The song, with its rapid-fire, seemingly eternal string of spits, garnered praise from many corners — but not everyone’s so thrilled.

“Eminem is every bit the same lazy, offensive bile-spewer he was back then,” writes The Week, “back then” being when Eminem released his original Marshall Mathers LP in 2000. “Eminem’s ‘Rap God’ is full of homophobic slurs,’” reads a Huffington Post headline. Salon also held Em responsible, calling him “a grown-ass middle-aged man” who should know better.

Home Flattened by Fire Housed Advocacy Group

Firefighters were called back to Mt.Scio Rd. in St. John's early this morning to douse hotspots of what remained from a roaring Monday night fire. The structure is not only a loss to a family, but potentially a fisheries advocacy group.

238 Mt.Scio Rd. has been associated with the Northern Coalition -- a group of six community based organizations representing in excess of 20,000 Inuit and Metis of Northern Labrador. The not-for-profit group was established in 1996 to protect shrimp allocations. No one was home at the time of the fire, just before 8 p.m. last night. The homeowner is out of town and could not be reached for comment.

From the roadway there's not much for passersby to see but yellow police tape across a long driveway. A single RNC vehicle stands guard. The chimney is all that remains, standing tall. The building was gutted, the charred metal and belongings still smouldering -- a huff of smoke hangs low over the debris as the intermittent rain showers act as a natural damper. Police have not released any information about the investigation.

Nexus 5 shows up

Google’s collaboration with LG may bear fruit yet again today, as the Nexus 5 is rumoured to launch without the same fanfare as previous years. One needs only look at the increased frequency, and quality, of leaks in recent days to confirm its imminent announcement.

The latest set of photos come from Russian social network, VK, and show the Nexus 5 in its fingerprint-happy matte black finish. The device appears to be similar in size to the Nexus 4, with smaller bezels that offset the larger screen size, and a lack of glass to ensure a more sturdy chassis.

Other than that, the phone appears to be about as nondescript as an Android device can be, with a pronounced but unremarkable 8MP camera on the back (though OIS is rumoured), a Nexus logo written vertically along the back, and that aforementioned rubbery matte finish that should protect the phone better against knocks and falls.

Photo Galleries Giant oarfish carcass discovered off Southern California coast

A marine science instructor snorkeling off the Southern California coast spotted something out of a fantasy novel: the silvery carcass of a five-metre-long, serpent-like oarfish.

Jasmine Santana of the Catalina Island Marine Institute needed more than 15 helpers to drag the giant sea creature to shore on Sunday.

Staffers at the institute are calling it the discovery of a lifetime.

"We've never seen a fish this big," said Mark Waddington, senior captain of the Tole Mour, CIMI's sail training ship. "The last oarfish we saw was three feet long."

Because oarfish dive more than 914 metres deep, sightings of the creatures are rare and they are largely unstudied, according to CIMI.
