The
Winter Classic turned into the Tyler Bozak show for
the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The
center not only scored his fifth goal of the season to give Toronto a
2-1 lead in the third period (a lead that would be short-lived thanks
to a Justin Abdelkader goal), he would then score the
game-winning goal in the shootout to lift the Maple Leafs to a 3-2
win.
With
the win Toronto jumped one point ahead of the Red Wings for
the No. 7 spot in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
For
Detroit, the loss extended its season-long struggles in the shootout
as the team is now 1-7 on the season. Going back to the start of last
season the Red Wings are just 3-12 in the shootout. For a team that
has players like Pavel Datsyuk, Daniel Alfredsson, Henrik
Zetterberg, Todd Bertuzzi and a really good goaltender
(Jimmy Howard) that's absolutely stunning.
It's
the second time a Winter Classic has ended in a shootout. The 2008
game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres also came
down to a shootout.
