Samsung set to expand curved Ultra HD line

Samsung is making a straight pitch for curved Ultra HD TVs.
In addition to showing off its mammoth 105-inch curved Ultra HD display here at the Consumer Electronics Show, the TV and electronics giant announced plans for 55-inch, 65-inch and 78-inch curved UHD sets (no prices, later this year).
Samsung's curved displays deliver "even more lifelike picture quality with more depth," said HS Kim, executive vice president of the visual display business at Samsung Electronics. He compared the experience to 3-D and IMAX. "You can feel that effect."
Ultra HD, which offers four times the resolution of current HDTVs, will get more attention from Samsung, too, in 2014. In addition to the previously announced 110-inch UHD display, new sizes run from 50 inches to 75. "It is very clear that UHD is a technology for the future," Kim said.
The company also announced plans to add streaming Ultra HD content through its Smart Hub; partners include Amazon, M-GO, Netflix, Comcast and DirecTV.

3 New Features Included In Cloud Storage App

Google updated its cloud storage and document synchronization app, Google Drive on Monday. The new features changed the way that users can sort documents, and offers new functionality for users of Google Docs.
In an update that is rolling across mobile devices, the Google Drive app now allows for easier sorting of files -- including the options “last sorted by me” and “last edited by me.” Google Drive also now allows users the ability to “Find and Replace” strings of text located within documents.
Google notes that it also included some “under the hood and usability improvements.” This means that the search giant likely tweaked the app’s software to allow Google Drive to run faster or more efficiently.

Hour of Code hopes to teach kids a love of computer programming

An initiative backed by a star-studded ensemble that extends from POTUS to Shakira is encouraging students to try coding for an hour in honor of Computer Science Education Week.
That’s the goal of this year’s Computer Science Education Week’s (CSEW) initiative "Hour of Code," CSEW has been going on since 2009, but this year nonprofit Code took over and put the focus on getting kids interested in computer science.

The nonprofit recruited the likes of President Obama, Ashton Kutcher, and Mark Zuckerberg to advocate kids spend one hour this week learning code, in hopes of spurring interest in a future increasingly interconnected with computer literacy.

Grace Hopper , Amazing Grace of computer history, gets Google Doodle

Grace Hopper, known as "the first lady of software," is celebrated for her computer genius, with a Google Doodle on what would have been her 107th birthday.

The doodle would have been deeply appreciated by Grace Murray Hopper. She rose through the naval ranks to achieve the title of rear admiral. She was a pioneering Navy computer programmer who coined the term "bug" to describe computer woes.

When she retired in 1986, she was the nation's oldest active-duty military officer. She died Jan. 1, 1992, at age 85.

Hopper, who was nicknamed Amazing Grace, was co-inventor of the business-oriented programming language COBOL and was so key to the Navy's computer work that she stayed in uniform under year-to-year extensions long after the regular retirement age of 62 to work on the Navy's computer programs, according to a Los Angeles Times obituary.

Is there a 'dark side' to Amazon drones, Google robots?

I've got Amazon.com drones in my future.I use Amazon's Prime delivery service for everything from rechargable batteries to art books to beef jerky, and so I was quite taken aback when CEO Jeff Bezos showcased a drone delivery system called Prime Air on 60 Minutes this past weekend. The idea is that packages below five pounds could be delivered straight from Amazon distribution centers to customers within 30 minutes using drones.

For now, it seems like half pipe dream, half pseudo-marketing: As many have observed, it probably wasn't a coincidence that the 60 Minutes segment aired on Sunday ahead of Cyber Monday, the busiest online shopping day of the year -- a good time for Amazon to be in the news.
Since Sunday's show, media coverage of Bezo's plan has overwhelmingly focused on the technical and logistical aspects of Prime Air.
For example, will the FAA be okay with all these drones flying around? Are they safe enough to fly around crowded cities and neighborhoods? And can Amazon economically operate what would be a presumably large fleet of drones?
And Amazon's not the only one in this game. The Verge reported that United Parcel Service is researching delivery drones, too.
Additionally, we learned this week that Google acquired seven robotics companies, which, according to a New York Times report, "are capable of creating technologies needed to build a mobile, dexterous robot."

One more reason Microsoft Office will kill Google Docs

Here's one more reason Microsoft Office is killing Google Docs (now called Google Drive) in the battle of office suites: Google simply isn't serious about joining the fight, at least according to the New York Times. Microsoft is dead serious, and so Google Drive simply won't be able to compete.

The Times, in an article about Google's cloud-based service Google Compute Engine, has this to say about Google Drive:
The business version of Drive, its word processing, spreadsheet and storage service, was first introduced under a different name in 2007. It now has revenue of over $1 billion a year, but current and former executives have complained that it is a low priority inside the company because Google makes so much more money from consumer advertising.
At Microsoft, on the other hand, Office is an extremely high priority because of how important it is to the company's financial health. The Motley Fool reports that Office accounted for 29% of all of Microsoft's revenue in the 2013 fiscal year. Because of that, it's vital for Microsoft to continue to own the Office market. And it does. Gartner says that by the end of the year 630 million business users will be using Office, with 50 million of them using a cloud-based version. And by 2022, it says, 1.2 billion business users will use Office, with 696 million of them using a cloud-based version.

A Computerworld article backs up what the Times says, concluding that Google Apps is struggling to gain ground against Office, particularly in the enterprise. The article concludes that seven years after Google Apps (the enterprise version of Google Docs) was released:
Complacency has diluted [Google's] innovative spirit, and Google Apps now trails competing suites from IBM, Cisco and Microsoft in areas like enterprise social networking (ESN) and unified communications (UC).

Amazon unviels 30-minute Prime Air quadcopley delivery service

Amazon, the company that already automates many of its warehouses and fulfillment centers with robot workers, has unveiled Amazon Prime Air — a new delivery method that will see autonomous quadcopters deliver your order within 30 minutes. A couple of years from now, perhaps on Cyber Monday in 2015, you might be able to order a PS4 game or the latest smartphone and have it delivered to your door in half an hour.

At this point, you should probably watch the video below — and then read on for some discussion of the technological, regulatory, and practical issues that Amazon will face.

Maria Callas Google Doodle celebrates 90th birthday

Google has marked the 90th anniversary of the birth of the iconic Greek soprano Maria Callas with a celebratory doodle.

Callas was born on 2 December 1923, in New York and made her debut in Boccaccio for the Royal Opera of Athens, and took her first major role in Tosca. Her Italian opera debut took place at the Verona Arena in 1947 and her American one in 1954. Callas died in Paris in 1977.

Callas's dramatic off-stage life often overshadowed her success on it. She developed a rivalry with the more classically-styled soprano Renata Tebaldi, acquired the reputation as a prima donna, and had an affair with shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis after divorcing her husband Giovanni Meneghini - only for Onassis to leave her for Jackie Kennedy.

Cyber Monday deals lure shoppers on the job

Cash registers and crowds are giving way to keyboards and monitors. Millions are expected to fill virtual shopping carts on Monday, swapping Black Friday for Cyber Monday.

On Cyber Monday we tend to see deeper discounts. Deeper discounts are anything 40 percent or above. If you see anything 40 percent and above, take it. It's a good deal,” said Kristen Nelson, spokesperson at retailmenot.com. The website features coupon codes for retailers.

On Cyber Monday users can find discounts on top of the deals already being offered.

You're going to see a lot of free shipping offers. You're going to see a lot of the deep discounts, the 40 percent and above and also free products. So, maybe a free gift at checkout? Things like that,” explained Nelson.

Eight in 10 retailers say they will offer specials on Cyber Monday. For most the shopping kicks off at midnight, but e-retailers such as Amazon.com are already offering deals.

Microsoft In Talks to Buy Shoutcast and Winamp From AOL

Looks like the llama may not get off so easily after all. AOL yesterday announced that it was shutting down Winamp, media playing software for Windows and Android devices that it picked up through its 1999, $80 million acquisition of Nullsoft in 1999. But today Techcrunch has learned that AOL is talks with Microsoft to sell Winamp, along with Shoutcast, a media streaming service also developed by Nullsoft. We have also learned that AOL has been planning to announce the closure of Shoutcast next week.

AOL has declined to comment for this story, and we are still waiting to hear back from Microsoft with a response. From what we understand, the deal is not yet finalized, with AOL and Microsoft still working out the price. It could also be very wishful thinking from those intent on trying to save both services.

AOL did not give any guidance yesterday on what would happen with Shoutcast.

Xbox One: A $499 PC for your living room

The Xbox One is Microsoft's first new gaming console in eight years. It's quality piece of hardware but it's also noteworthy because Microsoft is using it to make a statement.
Video game consoles are no longer just gaming consoles. They're computers for you living room.
So how does the Xbox One which goes on sale for $499 on Friday , fare with that in mind.
The Xbox hardware is big ... even by next-generation console standards. It's bigger than a cable box and Blu-ray player, but thankfully smaller than an AV Receiver.
That said, the Xbox One is tastefully designed, which makes its size less of an issue. The combination of finishes, textures and angles make the all-black box fun, but not loud. You won't have to hide this away from public sight.

On the inside, the Xbox is now powered by the same developer-friendly 8-core processor as Sony's PlayStation 4. It also has 8 gigabytes of RAM, but its approach to using these components is very different from its competitor.

What would I say? The App that generates Facebook statuses so you don't have to

New game takes inspiration from your old statues and was invented 'just for fun' at a US hacking summit.

Ever wished you could instantly pop up on Facebook as your usual funny , inspirational and urbane self without the bother of actually coming up with the words?

A team in the US has invented a new application which thankfully, takes all the work out of posting a status on the social media site.

It works by accessing every previous post a user has ever done, mixing them all up and then regurgitating bits of them in an order that roughtly makes sense.

Walmart Black Friday 2013 Ad Brings iPad mini Deal You Can't Miss

Apple Black Friday deals are among the biggest prizes for Black Friday shoppers, and normally it is hard to get the best Black Friday deals on Apple products like a new iPad, but the Walmart Black Friday 2013 ad promises an iPad mini deal you can’t pass up and you won’t miss out on as long as you are at Walmart within the first hour of Black Friday sales.

Walmart’s iPad mini Black Friday deal is for a full price iPad mini, with a $100 gift card. That’s as good as cutting $100 off the price of this tablet.  An iPad mini for $199 is cheaper than an iPod touch and arguably a better overall gift for many users.
Most of the iPad mini Black Friday deals will sell out within a few minutes of the store opening, and will go to shoppers who skipped Thanksgiving lunch and dinner to camp outside of a store.

Access Google Drive Commands with One Keyboard Shortcut

Google Drive is a pretty robust word processor by itself, but it can be a fit frustating trying to hunt down where all of the functions you need are. However , you can find everything with one shortcut: hit Alt/ and search.

The Alt-/ shortcut will put up a search box that you can use to find any command hidden in any Google Drive's menus. If the command has it's own , faster shortcut , you can see it listed there as well. User's of application like Launchy might find the motions familiar, but it should be useful to anyone who's ever wondered where the heck the page margin setting are.

Microsoft releases Windows 8.1 update

Microsoft released its long-awaited Windows 8.1 upgrade as a free download Thursday. It addresses some of the gripes people have had with Windows 8, the dramatically different operating system that attempts to bridge the divide between tablets and PCs.

Windows 8.1 still features the dual worlds that Windows 8 created when it came out last October. On one hand, it features a touch-enabled tile interface resembling what's found in tablet computers. On the other, there's the old desktop mode where the keyboard and mouse still reign. The update adds some new finger- and gesture-friendly shortcuts for touch-based apps, while restoring some respect for the desktop mode that a billion PC users have become accustomed to.
