Bitcoin Collides with Government Concerns

If Bitcoin is a bubble, as its critics contend, it is showing signs of deflating.
A rapid succession of moves by governments around the world has cast doubts on the legitimacy of the virtual currency, and its price fell about 60 percent at one point on Wednesday morning from its high earlier this month. It recovered some as the day went on.

The price volatility is underscoring Bitcoin’s sensitivity to decisions by government officials despite its promised status as the first global currency free of government intervention and oversight. Money, it turns out, is still a government prerogative.

This tight regulation is really counter to what a lot of folks thought was going to happen,” said Mark T. Williams, a finance professor at Boston University who has been tracking Bitcoin. “Regulation is the future of e-currency, not decentralization as many had hoped.”
The most damaging news for the digital currency has come out of China, where the largest Bitcoin exchange, BTC China, said on Wednesday that it would no longer accept deposits in renminbi, the Chinese currency.

For reasons we all know, BTC China has had to cease renminbi-account charging functions,” the exchange said in a message on its verified account on Weibo, China’sTwitter-like messaging service. It said that it would continue operating and that existing deposits and renminbi withdrawals would not be affected.

Justin Trudeau won last Monday's four federal by-elections

Justin Trudeau emerged the big winner from Monday’s four federal by-elections.
At first glance, the results simply preserved the status quo: the Conservatives held on to two longtime Tory bastions in Manitoba, while the Liberals retained two traditional Grit strongholds in Toronto and Montreal.
Beneath the surface, however, the byelections have roiled Canada’s political waters, suggesting the Senate expenses scandal has badly hurt the Tory government and that Trudeau’s Liberals are the ones who stand to benefit.
The Liberals increased their share of the vote in all four ridings — dramatically so in two Manitoba ridings where they were all but invisible in the 2011 election, coming within a whisker of an upset victory in Brandon-Souris.
In Toronto Centre and Montreal’s Bourassa riding, the Liberals emerged victorious in a battle with the NDP over which opposition party is the real government-in-waiting. Despite an aggressive challenge by the NDP, the Liberal vote share increased slightly in both ridings.

Va. Sen. Creigh Deeds' Stabbing, Son's Death Eyed as Attempted Murder-Suicide

Police are investigating this morning's stabbing of a former Democratic nominee for governor of Virginia as "an attempted murder and suicide," they said this afternoon.
Creigh Deeds is now in fair condition at a Virginia hospital after he was stabbed multiple times in his home. His son, Gus Deeds, 24, was pronounced dead at the scene from a gunshot injury, state police said.
Police did not specifically name Gus Deeds as the perpetrator, but they are not searching for any suspects. Police are still investigating the motive and the sequence of events at the Millboro, Va., home.
Creigh Deeds was stabbed multiple times in the head and upper torso, but was capable of speaking with police and investigators, Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said.
Doctors upgraded his condition to fair from critical this afternoon, meaning he is conscious with stable vital signs within normal limits.
First responders had attempted this morning to treat his son at the scene, but he succumbed to his gunshot wound.

Rob Ford caught on video

Toronto mayor Rob Ford has beed caught on video in an impaired rent saying he is going to kill someone and 'rip his f---ing throat out.”

Ford slurs his words as he staggers around an unknown dining room , apparently high, ranting gibberish and gesticulating wildly.
I'm gonna kill that f---ing guy. I'm telling you , it's first degree murder,” Ford rages as someone in the room secretly uses a cellphone to film the chief magistrate addled tirade.

Moments after the Star published the video online, Ford emerged from his office and apologized.

The Toronto Star just released a video the I was very very inebriated.”

All I can say is , again, I've made mistakes , I just wanted to come out to tell you I saw a video . It's extremely embarassing . The whole world's going to see it. You know what ? I don't have a problem with that.”

I hope none of you have ever or will ever be in that state. Obviously , I was extremely , extremely inebriated.”

Rob Ford rack scandal

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford finally admitted Tuesday he has used crack cocaine, five months after news reports surfaced that he was caught on video purportedly smoking from a crack pipe.

Whether Ford had used the illegal drug was a key question in the video scandal surrounding the mayor of Canada's largest city. But numerous other questions remain unanswered, including:

On May 16, U.S. gossip website Gawker.com and the Toronto Star published stories about a video allegedly showing the mayor smoking from a crack pipe. Both media outlets said the video was being shopped around by an unnamed source.

A photo was distributed to both media outlets showing the mayor alongside Smith, who was shot and killed on March 28. Two other men in the photo were subsequently arrested in a series of predawn police raids targeting guns and gangs in the city's west end.

The photo is believed to have been taken outside 15 Windsor Rd., a building police suspect was a crack house and where Fabio and Elaine Basso reside. Fabio is Ford's friend.

Rob Ford wants free admission

I lived in Saskatchewan from 1985 to 1991, when the stench of Colin Thatcher was still thick in the air.

Saskatchewan is a small province and Regina is a small town; every morning on my way to work I had to pass by the house where his wife used to live.

I was working for the CBC then. Thatcher was doing everything in his power to get out in jail , and there were appeals and manoeuvres , and the dates of these things came and went , and we reported them all.

It was , in retrospect , like watching a snake that had been run over by a car.

U.S. Government shutdown

The U.S. government could close its doors Tuesday if Congress can’t reach a deal on a temporary spending budget bill, and that would jeopardize the paycheques of more than 800,000 Americans, as well as the country’s economic recovery.
It's political bickering between Democrats and Republicans in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, along with Republican in-fighting, that has brought the country to the brink of a shutdown yet again.

Once more, the U.S. Congress is deadlocked on a temporary spending bill that needs to pass in order to keep funding the federal government's operations, its employees and the services they provide.
Congress hasn’t passed any of the annual bills that fund various government agencies, so it has had to rely on stop gap measures that are known as continuing resolutions. The government needs to pass another one as soon as possible to keep the cash flowing beyond Sept. 30. more details...

Ted Cruz deal

TedCruz says he wasn't elected to the Senate to stay quiet. And his refusal upon entering Congress to observe its protocol to sit back and learn like a freshman, as expected, rubbed some of his more senior colleagues the wrong way.

And while he has angered much of his party over his crusade against President Barack Obama's health care law and the potential government shutdown it could cause, Cruz says he's standing for the same principles that got him elected.

On Tuesday, he took that edict to the Senate floor in support of his plan to defund Obama care, saying he would speak "until I am nolonger able to stand."

But his marathon appearance will not do anything to block Obama care funding with a key procedural vote on the issue still scheduled for Wednesday. Instead, Cruz said his speech was to simply "make D.C. listen." see more...

Syria attack used Sarin gas

The Obama administration asserted Sunday for the first time that the Syrian government used the nerve gas sarin to kill more than 1,400 people in the world’s gravest chemical weapons attack in 25 years as the White House intensified pressure on a skeptical Congress to authorize punitive military strikes against Damascus.

Secretary of State John F. Kerry said new laboratory tests showed traces of sarin, an extremely toxic nerve agent, in blood and hair samples collected from emergency workers who responded Aug. 21 to the scene of an alleged chemical weapons attack in the Damascus suburbs.
In an interview blitz on five Sunday television news shows, Kerry said the fresh forensic evidence strengthened an already compelling case for taking military action against the government of Syrian PresidentBashar al-Assad, and he predicted that Congress would vote to give President Obama that authority. Teresa and Joe Guidance plead not guilty to federal fraud charges

RealityTV star Teresa Giudice and her hot-tempered hubby returned to court Wednesday and pleaded not guilty to federal fraud charges.
Standing silently in the courtroom, Teresa and Joe let their lawyers do the talking for them.
The stress appears to be getting to Teresa, who looked as if she hasn’t missed too many meals since being indicted last month.

When their brief court appearance was over, “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” stars walked out holding hands — and with grim expressions on their faces.

They were relieved they could stand up in court and plead not guilty through their attorneys,” Joe Giudice’s lawyer, Miles Feinstein, said after the couple left the Newark federal courthouse.

Teresa, dressed in a khaki-colored pants suit and her dark hair up in a bun, kept her cool as photographers closed in.See more..

Pamela Wallin's troubling expense

The independent audit of Senator Pamela Wallin's expenses has been referred to the RCMP by a Senate committee that is also imposing restrictions on her travel and asking her to repay more of her expenses.

The internal economy committee met Tuesday morning on Parliament Hill and agreed to a set of recommendations in response to the Deloitte audit it received Monday. The audit assessed more than $500,000 worth of Wallin's travel claims and determined whether they were all related to Senate business or not.
The RCMP referral and other recommendations are contained in the committee's report that says Wallin had an "unusual pattern" of stopping in Toronto, where she owns a condo, on her way from Ottawa to Saskatchewan, the province she was appointed to represent in 2009. See more..

Princess Diana was 'madly in love' with heart sergeon Hasnat Khan

Diana wanted to marry the doctor, with whom she had a two-year relationship, and secretly met his family in Pakistan to discuss the possibility of a union, according to Jemima.

She is understood to have told two other friends that she wanted a daughter with the eminent surgeon.

"Diana was madly in love with Hasnat Khan and wanted to marry him," Jemima told Vanity Fair. "Even if that meant living in Pakistan, and that’s one of the reasons why we became friends.”

Jemima disclosed that Diana visited her twice in Pakistan to help fund-raise for the hospital where her former husband Imran Khan – a distant cousin of Diana's lover – worked.

"Both times she also went to meet his family secretly to discuss the possibility of marriage to Hasnat," she said.

Anthony Weiner's spokeswoman trashes intern Olivia Nuzzi in profanity-lanced rant

BarbaraMorgan, mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner's communications director, said Wednesday she thought she was 'off the record' when she called Olivia Nuzzi, former intern for the campaign, a 'slutbag,' 't--t' and 'little c---.' Now she has a swear jar.

AnthonyWeiner's communications director trashed a former campaign intern Tuesday in a shocking, profane rant published by a news blog.

Barbara Morgan said Tuesday night that she thought she was “off the record” when she repeatedly called Olivia Nuzzi a “slutbag,” “t--t” and “little c---.”

In an attempt to downplay her outrageous tirade, Morgan tweeted an image of a swear jar brimming with cash and a credit card early Wednesday afternoon, admitting, “Not my best day yesterday. Should've known better, been better. Gotta pay up.”

Morgan was reacting to a column Nuzzi wrote Tuesday exclusively for the Daily News. The college student wrote that some Weiner staffers signed on to the sexting scandal-starred Democrat’s campaign because they thought it might help them land future work with Hillary Clinton.

Nuzzi wrote that there were “a lot of short résumés” among campaign staffers and said Weiner mistakenly called her and several other interns “Monica.”

It was the particular jab on staffers’ job credentials that particularly riled Morgan up.

“You know what? F--- you, you little c--t. I’m not joking, I am going to sue her,” Morgan ripped back to Talking Points Memo Tuesday while calling Nuzzi a “f---ing slutbag" who repeatedly didn't show up during her four weeks as an intern.

"Of those twenty days, she missed probably five because she would just like not show up and not tell me she wasn’t going to be there," she told the blog. "She sucked. She like wasn't good at setting up events. She was clearly there because she wanted to be seen."

Only adding fuel to the fire was seeing Nuzzi's front-page spread with the Daily News — one she sarcastically complimented as a "nice f---ing glamour shot."

“I’m dealing with like stupid f---ing interns who make it on to the cover of the Daily News even though they signed [non-disclosure agreements] and/or they proceeded to trash me,” Morgan told TPM. “And by the way, I tried to fire her, but she begged to come back and I gave her a second chance.”

This was all after Nuzzi originally begged to intern for her, wanting to "be your b---- all summer long," according to Morgan.

Man, see if you ever get a job in this town again," she said.

Morgan apologized late Tuesday.

In a moment of frustration, I used inappropriate language in what I thought was an off-the-record conversation,” she said in a statement. “It was wrong and I am very sorry, which is what I said tonight when I called and emailed Olivia to apologize.”

Nuzzi tweeted early Wednesday that she accepted Morgan's apology. The blog’s editor, Josh Marshall, insisted Morgan was on the record.

The Royal Baby was born and it's a boy!

Get ready for a 62-gun salute, watch the water in the fountains turn blue, let the fireworks and street parties commence: The royal baby has arrived, and it's a boy.

PrinceWilliam and Duchess Kate's first baby, a future monarch, was born today at 4:24 pm local time in London's private wing of St. Mary'sHospital, the palace announced. The announcement said the baby weighed 8 pounds, 6 ounces, and William was present for the birth.
In a statement, Prince William said: "We could not be happier."
Mother and baby were both doing well, the announcement added. The name was not immediately announced. There's a chance it could be announced as early as Tuesday, but it's also possible it may not be known for some days.
The news was supposed to be first announced in the traditional manner, on fancy paper with a Buckingham Palace letterhead on a gilded easel at the palace front gates. Instead, it went out by electronic press release first, to the royal Twitter feed and websites, and then proclaimed from every TV and computer screen in the country.
After that, the framed announcement went up on the easel at the gates, watched and cheered by a growing crowd despite what was being called the hottest day in London in years.
But the baby's great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, was the first to get the news from her grandson, by encrypted phone to the palace, and just in time, too. She's scheduled to leave on her annual vacation at her Balmoral estate in Scotland at the end of this week.
The palace announcement said the royal family, including the queen's husband, Prince Philip, the baby's grandfather, Prince Charles the Prince of Wales, his wife, Camilla Duchess of Cornwall, and William's brother, Prince Harry, and other family members have been notified and are "delighted."
Prince Charles issued a statement saying he and Camilla are "overjoyed" and "thrilled" for the couple. "Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone's life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future," the first-in-line to the throne said.
Prime Minister David Cameron came out of Number 10 to hail the "wonderfulnews" and the "important moment in the life of the nation."
President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama congratulated the couple on "the joyous occasion" of the birth.
"We wish them all the happiness and blessings parenthood brings," the Obamas said in a written statement. "The child enters the world at a time of promise and opportunity for our two nations. Given the special relationship between us, the American people are pleased to join with the people of the United Kingdom as they celebrate the birth of the young prince."
In a separate message posted on Twitter, Mrs. Obama said: "Being a parent is the best job of all."
Speaking of Twitter, the company announced late Monday that more than 2 million tweets about the royal baby were sent out starting when Duchess Kate checked into the hospital early in the morning, reaching a royal-baby buzz peak of about 25,300 tweets per minute.
There was no word yet on whether Kate's mother and younger sister, Carole and Pippa Middleton, 29, were at the hospital for the birth.
The duchess was expected to spend at least one night overnight at the hospital, but it's possible she and William and the baby will emerge from the hospital as soon as today for the customary pose before the media, after three weeks of waiting, outside the hospital.
The birth of the royal baby was a model of the careful blend of traditional and modern exemplified by this royal couple in the dozen years they've been a couple. Plans call for a multi-gun salute near Buckingham Palace, probably on Tuesday, blue water running in the fountains, blue lights at the top of iconic buildings, fireworks and street celebrations throughout the land.
The baby arrives just short of 27 months since William and Kate were married in a spectacular ceremony at Westminster Abbey on April 29,2011. The nine months of her pregnancy have been chronicled by the British and world media with excruciating detail and growing excitement about the first royal heir to be born in 31 years, since William himself was born to Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
(In fact, the last time the easel-and-note was used to announce a royal birth was for William.)
The baby moves immediately to third in line to the throne, behind fatherWilliam and grandfather Charles. The queen is 87 and celebrating her 61st year on the throne.
The past few weeks saw rising royal-baby fever in Britain, with hopes high that the birth would provide an estimated $360 million boost in the flat British economy. Meanwhile, royal-baby doodads, such as Will and Kate masks, poured into shops for use at the street parties soon to break out all over the country.
The baby arrived a little late , based on a mid-July due date. Unlike the majority of births in Britain, no one, not even the parents, knew the sex of the baby until the birth.
