AJ McCarron's college finale comes against Oklahoma

Two of the nation's most tradition-rich programs meet with a combined record of 21-3. Alabama fell just short of an SEC Championship Game berth, and potentially a third consecutive BCS title, with a last-second loss to rival Auburn in the Iron Bowl. Oklahoma's national title hopes were dashed with an October loss to rival Texas. Baylor also knocked off the Sooners.

OU's top three NFL prospects are defensive back Aaron Colvin, center Gabe Ikard and wide receiver Jalen Saunders. Colvin intercepted just one pass on the season, but was consistent in coverage and also run support. Saunders made 56 receptions for 654 yards and six scores, leading the Sooners in all three categories.
Colvin should match up plenty with Alabama sophomore Amari Cooper, whose production was down this season due to nagging injuries. Alabama has a long list of top draft prospects, led by junior offensive tackle Cyrus Kouandjio, linebacker C.J. Mosley, safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and quarterback AJ McCarron. One of UA's draft prospects for later rounds, senior cornerback Deion Belue, should draw Saunders frequently in coverage. Kouandjio and Clinton-Dix are juniors contemplating early draft entry, while Mosley and McCarron are seniors. This will be the last game NFL scouts get to see McCarron play, as the third-year starter does not intend to play in the Senior Bowl.

Tim Leiweke discusses BMO Field expansion

Tim Leiweke has been in his job with Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment for a little over half a year now.  In that time it has quickly become clear that he is the perfect fit for the company as they try to further expand their sports and entertainment empire in Toronto.  Leiweke knows how to talk the big talk and inspire the fans.  He also knows how to add value to a company like he did in his previous role with AEG.
Since taking over Leiweke has already made major decisions about MLSE's three biggest properties and who should be in charge of shaping their futures.  He gave a vote of confidence to Leafs GM Dave Nonis, he brought in one of the top young GMs in the NBA with the hiring of Masai Ujiri to run that franchise, and he replaced Kevin Payne with Tim Bezbatchenko at the top of Toronto FC.

Those were the highest profile moves that he has made in his short time in Toronto but there were certainly other moves that put MLSE in a better position moving forward.  There has been a fair bit of turnover at the top of MLSE in recent months as Leiweke looks to bring in the people he wants to work closely with which has resulted in some of the less popular figures in the organization being shuffled out.

On the whole, things seem to be heading in the right direction for MLSE under their new boss with the major caveat that none of it has yet produced results on the ice/court/field as his changes are only just starting to have an impact on the organizations.

Temperatures hit -50

A frigid cold snap that can freeze exposed skin in a matter of minutes has swept across much of Canada, less than two weeks after hundreds of thousands of people in parts of the country were left without power after a vicious ice storm.

Residents in Lynn Lake, Man., were dealing with frigid temperatures as low as - 44 C with the wind chill Thursday afternoon. Winnipeg was slightly warmer at – 33.

Most Canadian are saying it is only two weeks old -- winter -- but enough is enough,” Dave Phillips, Environment Canada senior climatologist, told CP24 Thursday afternoon.

“This bully that we describe as the cold air is engulfing all of Canada. Everyone is in this misery from coast to cost to coast.”

In Timmins, Ont., the mercury dipped to - 52 Thursday morning when the wind chill was factored in. The air was so cold it caused ice fog -- a type of fog seen in extreme cold weather that consists of ice crystals -- limiting visibility on many streets and roads. The normal seasonal low in the city is -23.

Southern Ontario was also under a wind chill warning Thursday, with the City of Toronto advising homeless people to seek shelter.

The temperature with the wind chill reached - 31 in the afternoon, and the mercury is expected to dip in the evening. The normal seasonal low for Toronto is -9.
It is a serious issue with these brutal wind chills where flesh can freeze in under a half hour,” Phillips said.

Up-and-Coming Eng-Clicks Torpedo Quietly Aiming at LinkedIn

In a market bursting with websites purporting to be the new Facebook or LinkedIn, it takes a truly innovative vision to propel new entrants to the forefront.

Eng-Clicks is quickly becoming a website to watch - because it is not just "another website."
"Nor is it another Facebook, or another LinkedIn," says CEO Marin Vratonjic.
"Eng-Clicks is more."

Originally developed as a web-based tool to help Canadian engineers connect and collaborate, the vision for Eng-Clicks - a unique technical and business intelligence network - seems to be expanding by the day.
"The vision has changed because we realized how much potential power exists in Eng-Clicks," explains Marin Vratonjic. "There was no good reason to limit the scope, and many good reasons to keep innovating and introducing new features and functions."

Vratonjic is a Professional Engineer and serial entrepreneur who juggled graduate studies at the University of Toronto with full-time work in consulting and manufacturing. Finding that he enjoyed the business side of engineering prompted him to launch his own design and build house. Honing both his technical and business skills gave Vratonjic a glimpse into the challenges and gaps facing engineers and entrepreneurs. Eng-Clicks, he says, is "the result of - and the solution to - problems in our industry."

Unlike sites on which users are "along for the ride," Eng-Clicks encourages members to create their own online business identity, and share it with the world. When completed later this year, the site will feature user video channels for training and education, a micro-financing and investing platform and discounted access to content management tools, which Vratonjic says are critical but often prohibitively expensive in engineering and manufacturing. Having other features like job and tendering posts, video conferencing and cloud storage all in one place could make Eng-Clicks a professional practice disruptor. The team is confident that, when fully functional, the site will streamline processes, support large-scale migration to cloud computing and facilitate international collaboration.

James Avery , star of 'The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” dies at 68

Actor James Avery, who played the beloved Uncle Phil on the hit 1990s sitcom "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," has died, his publicist said Wednesday. He was 68.
The cause of death was complications from open-heart surgery, said his manager, Toni Benson. Avery had surgery on November 11 and died Tuesday evening at a hospital in Glendale, California, according to Benson.

"Fresh Prince" co-star Joseph Marcell, who played the family butler Geoffrey, told CNN that Avery was "a marvelous man and a truly wonderful actor."

Avery played Philip Banks, the stern but loving uncle to Will Smith's character on the show.

"He strove to present an Uncle Phil that everybody wishes was their uncle," Marcell said.

Avery believed the show was important because the "striving of the African-American ought to have been shown on television," Marcell said. "What he has done for television, for African-Americans on television is unsurpassable."

"Fresh Prince" co-star Alfonso Ribeiro tweeted news of Avery's passing.

Winter Classic 2014

The Winter Classic turned into the Tyler Bozak show for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The center not only scored his fifth goal of the season to give Toronto a 2-1 lead in the third period (a lead that would be short-lived thanks to a Justin Abdelkader goal), he would then score the game-winning goal in the shootout to lift the Maple Leafs to a 3-2 win.
With the win Toronto jumped one point ahead of the Red Wings for the No. 7 spot in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

For Detroit, the loss extended its season-long struggles in the shootout as the team is now 1-7 on the season. Going back to the start of last season the Red Wings are just 3-12 in the shootout. For a team that has players like Pavel Datsyuk, Daniel Alfredsson, Henrik Zetterberg, Todd Bertuzzi and a really good goaltender (Jimmy Howard) that's absolutely stunning.
It's the second time a Winter Classic has ended in a shootout. The 2008 game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres also came down to a shootout.

'Big Bang Theory' star Kaley Cuoco weds

Her character on "The Big Bang Theory" could never discuss the rings of Saturn, but there's one ring actress Kaley Cuoco knows all about.

According to People, Cuoco has wed boyfriend and tennis pro Ryan Sweeting. On Wednesday, she posted a picture of herself on Instagram, decked in a pink gown, and kissing Sweeting with the caption: "Yep :) #thesweetings."

The pair had a whirlwind romance, getting engaged after just three months of dating. The actress said at the time that while she knew it was unconventional, the couple have a lot in common.

"It's been magic," Cuoco said. "We grew up with the same people, we just never met, so I kind of feel like I've known him my whole life. I know it seems a little crazy on paper, but it's what works for us."

Cuoco plays Penny, a waitress who is part of a group of friends including extremely educated scientists on the hit CBS show. She was previously linked romantically with "Man of Steel" actor Henry Cavill and her "BBT" costar Johnny Galecki.
