If you think Maria Bello is a lesbian , you weren't paying attention

The New York Times‘ weekly “Modern Love” essay feature is no stranger to generating buzz—regular readers will remember the infamous “Shamu lady” —but this Sunday’s may have topped them all. In a piece titled “Coming Out as a Modern Family,” actress Maria Bello (PrisonersGrown UpsThe Cooler) described her decision to tell her 12-year-old son that she had become involved romantically with her best friend, a woman identified in the piece as Clare and ID’d by The Hollywood Reporter and other outlets as media executive Clare Munn.
But that buzz has, in many cases, missed the point. In reporting on the piece, many headlines have declared that Bello “came out as gay“—but, despite the phrasing in Bello’s own headline, that’s sort of the opposite of what she wrote about.

Nordstrom hiring for upcoming Chinook Centre store

Iconic American retailer Nordstrom Inc. plans to hire for 30 management positions at its Chinook Centre store and those jobs will be posted on the company’s website beginning Thursday.

The retailer announced Monday that interested applicants can apply for the jobs at careers.nordstrom.com and management hiring will begin in February 2014.
The Calgary store will be the company’s first Canadian location and it will open Friday September 19, 2014.

Nordstrom also said it will hire an additional 360 employees for sales and support roles beginning in July 2014.

Nordstrom is looking for fun, smart people with leadership and or management experience, who are passionate about fashion and giving great service to our customers,” said Karen McKibbin, president of Nordstrom Canada, in a news release.

Typically we fill our management positions by promoting existing employees from other Nordstrom stores as part of our ‘promote from within’ philosophy. Since we don’t have any stores here, we’re trying something new. We’ll be hiring the majority of our department managers from Canada and will bring them to Seattle to participate in a cross-cultural immersion program for approximately three months. They will learn about our company culture, hear from company leaders and have the opportunity to work in our stores with a mentor manager. We’ll learn from them how to best serve Canadians and they’ll develop skills to bring the Nordstrom culture of service back to Canada.”

Maria Callas Google Doodle celebrates 90th birthday

Google has marked the 90th anniversary of the birth of the iconic Greek soprano Maria Callas with a celebratory doodle.

Callas was born on 2 December 1923, in New York and made her debut in Boccaccio for the Royal Opera of Athens, and took her first major role in Tosca. Her Italian opera debut took place at the Verona Arena in 1947 and her American one in 1954. Callas died in Paris in 1977.

Callas's dramatic off-stage life often overshadowed her success on it. She developed a rivalry with the more classically-styled soprano Renata Tebaldi, acquired the reputation as a prima donna, and had an affair with shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis after divorcing her husband Giovanni Meneghini - only for Onassis to leave her for Jackie Kennedy.

Cyber Monday deals lure shoppers on the job

Cash registers and crowds are giving way to keyboards and monitors. Millions are expected to fill virtual shopping carts on Monday, swapping Black Friday for Cyber Monday.

On Cyber Monday we tend to see deeper discounts. Deeper discounts are anything 40 percent or above. If you see anything 40 percent and above, take it. It's a good deal,” said Kristen Nelson, spokesperson at retailmenot.com. The website features coupon codes for retailers.

On Cyber Monday users can find discounts on top of the deals already being offered.

You're going to see a lot of free shipping offers. You're going to see a lot of the deep discounts, the 40 percent and above and also free products. So, maybe a free gift at checkout? Things like that,” explained Nelson.

Eight in 10 retailers say they will offer specials on Cyber Monday. For most the shopping kicks off at midnight, but e-retailers such as Amazon.com are already offering deals.

Tom Brady covers for poor defensive showing by Patriots

The Patriots’ defense was awful on Sunday, allowing the lowly Texans and their undrafted rookie quarterback to run up and down the field. The Patriots couldn’t tackle, they couldn’t cover and they couldn’t rush the passer.

So quarterback Tom Brady did what he does best, stepping out of the phone booth to save the day for the Patriots once again in their 34-31, come-from-behind victory.

Brady didn’t do it by himself, of course. Rob Gronkowski was an animal once again, catching six passes for 127 yards and an incredible 23-yard shoestring catch for a touchdown. Julian Edelman had his second consecutive 100-yard game (third this season), catching nine passes for 101 yards. And Stephen Gostkowski continued his quietly excellent season by drilling two 53-yard field goals in the fourth quarter to help seal the win.

But Brady was the architect of this win, once again.

Brady was unstoppable as the Patriots scored points on all five second-half possessions – three touchdowns followed by two field goals.

Overall, Brady had his second-best game of the season, completing 29-of-41 passes for 371 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. After struggling early with the Texans’ pass rush and throwing a bad interception, Brady dissected Houston’s defense in the second half, completing 18-of-23 passes for 263 yards and a touchdown in the second half.

4 Dead in Metro-North Train Derailment in the Bronx

Four people were killed after a Metro-North Railroad train derailed Sunday morning in the Bronx, officials said, in what is believed to be the deadliest train crash in New York City in more than two decades. Sixty-three people were injured, including 11 critically, the authorities said.

By the afternoon, federal investigators had begun what they said would be a 7- to 10-day examination of the circumstances that sent all eight cars of a Hudson Line train heading south from Poughkeepsie, N.Y., careering off the tracks at about 7:20 a.m. just north of the Spuyten Duyvil station near where tracks pass under the Henry Hudson Bridge.
A senior city official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the train operator had told emergency medical workers in the aftermath of the crash that the brakes had failed, but that the operator’s account had not been confirmed. At a news conference Sunday evening, Earl F. Weener of the National Transportation Safety Board said its investigators had yet to interview the operator of the train, who was among those injured, or the rest of the train crew.
Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo called the derailment “obviously a very tragic situation.” Saying “safety is Job 1,” he cautioned commuters not to expect an immediate resolution to the disruption. “I think it’s fair to say that tomorrow the people who use this line should plan on a longer commute,” he said.
