Gettysburg Address anniversary

In solemnity , thousands gathered on a central Pennysylvania battlefield park Tuesday to honor a speech given 150 years ago that President Abraham Lincoln predicted would not be long remembered.

The inspirational and famously short Gettysburg Address was praised for reinvigorating national ideas freedom, liberty and justice amid a Civil War that had torn the country into pieces.

“President Lincoln sought to heal a nation's wounds by defininf what a nation should be,” said Pennysylvania Gov. Tom Corbett , calling Lincoln's words superb, his faith deep and his genius profound.”Lincoln wrote his words on paper, but he also inscribed them in our hearts.”

Va. Sen. Creigh Deeds' Stabbing, Son's Death Eyed as Attempted Murder-Suicide

Police are investigating this morning's stabbing of a former Democratic nominee for governor of Virginia as "an attempted murder and suicide," they said this afternoon.

Creigh Deeds is now in fair condition at a Virginia hospital after he was stabbed multiple times in his home. His son, Gus Deeds, 24, was pronounced dead at the scene from a gunshot injury, state police said.

Police did not specifically name Gus Deeds as the perpetrator, but they are not searching for any suspects. Police are still investigating the motive and the sequence of events at the Millboro, Va., home.

Creigh Deeds was stabbed multiple times in the head and upper torso, but was capable of speaking with police and investigators, Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said.

Doctors upgraded his condition to fair from critical this afternoon, meaning he is conscious with stable vital signs within normal limits.

First responders had attempted this morning to treat his son at the scene, but he succumbed to his gunshot wound.

TV hunter Melissa Bachman the C-word over lion kill

Melissa Bachman, the host of "Deadly Passion" on the Pursuit Channel, is drawingire from all around the world after posting a picture bragging about a lion she killed while hunting in South Africa. Among those she angered was Ricky Gervais, who called out Bachman on Twitter.

“An incredible day hunting in South Africa!Stalker inside 60-yards on this beautiful male lion … what a hunt! “ she had tweeted , along with the picture above. “ Apot the typo...” Gervais responds.

Though African lions are not considered endangered they still are axotic creatures and the death of one – especially male lion could cause serious problems in a pack.

Panthers Hold Off Patriot on Final Play for a win

Cam Newton threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Ted Ginn Jr. with 59 seconds left, and the Carolina Panthers held off the visiting New England Patriots, 24-20, on Monday night for their sixth straight victory.

Stephen Gostkowski’s 26-yard field goal put the Patriots ahead, 20-17, before Newton drove Carolina 83 yards on 13 plays for the go-ahead touchdown.

Tom Brady did not go down without a fight. With 59 seconds and three timeouts to work with, he drove the Patriots to the Carolina 18. But he was intercepted in the end zone by safety Robert Lester as time expired.

Officials initially threw a flag on the play, apparently for pass interference, but then waved it off.

Newton completed 19 of 28 passes for 209 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Carolina entered the night as the N.F.L.’s No. 1 defense and did not disappoint early, sacking Brady twice and holding tight end Rob Gronkowski to one catch for 14 yards in the opening half.

Rob Ford should step aside

Conservative cabinet minister Jason Kenney had harsh words for Rob Ford on Tuesday, saying Toronto's mayor has brought dishonour to Canada's largest city and should step aside.

While most federal Conservatives have stayed mum on the subject of Ford , Kenney told reporters . Kenney told reporters after question period on Tuesday that ' I think Mr. Ford has bought dishonour to public office and the office of mayor and his city.”

Brittany Murphy's cause of death

Nearly four years after Brittany Murphy's death, the father of the Hollywood starlet has challenged the official cause amid speculation that the actress could have been poisoned.

Murphy died in December 2009 at the age of 32. The Los Angeles Coroner's Office ruled her death accidental and attributed it to natural causes. The office cited pneumonia, noting that Murphy's condition was compounded by severe anemia and prescription medication in her system.

The actress, a performer since childhood, was best known for performances in films such as Clueless, Eight Mile and Girl, Interruptedas well as voice roles on TV's King of the Hill and the animated movieHappy Feet.

George Zimmerman 911 call hears girlfriend say 'you point your gun at my face'

George Zimmerman wascharged with assault Monday after his girlfriend called deputies to the home where they were living and claimed he pointed a shotgun at her during an argument, authorities said.

The girlfriend, Samantha Scheibe, called 911 in the early afternoon to say that Zimmerman had smashed a glass table, threatened her with the shotgun and ultimately pushed her out of the house, according to an arrest report. After pushing her out, Zimmerman barricaded the door with furniture and refused to leave, saying that he would talk to police by phone, authorities said.

The arrest was the latest legal problem for Zimmerman since he was acquitted in July of criminal charges in the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teen. The case sparked accusations that Zimmerman had racially profiled Martin and led to nationwide debates over the so-called Stand Your Ground defence laws in Florida and other states.
