Thursday Night Football Preview

The NewEngland Patriots are lucky. They are the first NFL team since the 1950 Washington Redskins to face rookie quarterbacks in back-to-back weeks.

The Patriots also are unlucky. Their skill positions have been decimated, and it's only Week 2. Wide receiver Danny Amendola, tight end RobGronkowski, runningback Shane Vereen and tight end Zach Sudfeld are out.
Tom Brady did not look especially comfortable in the season opener with his young receivers, but he needs undrafted rookie KenbrellThompkins to step up after a rough Week 1 against the Buffalo Bills. It all sets up an intriguing "Thursday Night Football" game between the Patriots and NewYork Jets in Foxborough, Mass., on NFL Network. The Jets appear to have a better shot at this game than a lot of people expected a few weeks ago. Here are three things to watch for: watch this

Blobfish voted as Worlds Ugliest Animal

The blobfish, a squat, pink, gelatinous deep sea creature, is the new face of endangered species after being voted the global mascot of a conservation group called the Ugly Animal Preservation Society.

The unsightly fish beat out a giant parrot called the kakapo, a Mexican amphibian called the axolotl, the wrinkly Titicaca water frog, the proboscis monkey and seven other candidates in a two-week online vote, the society announced Thursday at the British Science Festival in Newcastle, England.
We love the panda, but we think it gets far too much attention,” said Jon Fitzmaurice, who volunteers as the project manager for the Ugly AnimalPreservation Society and also works for the British ScienceAssociation.

Loads of other animals are just as important. The problem is a lot of them are quite ugly. People don’t want to put them on t-shirts and in commercials.”
According to the society, the blobfish spends its life "gently bobbing around" the ocean at depths of 600 to 1200 metres, dining on crabs and lobsters, and its gelatinous look is a result of adaptations that help it maintain its buoyancy. It adds that although blobfish are inedible to humans, they are threatened by fishing trawlers that accidentally catch them while fishing for tastier species. see more...

Modify your Smartphone Bit by Bit with Phoneblocks

What is more important to you in a mobile phone, looks or upgradability? If you picked the latter, then you’ll probably get excited about a new phone concept called Phonebloks. It’s a modular smartphone made up of separate, interchangeable blocks that are easily upgraded or replaced if they break.

You can design your phone with the components you care about or need, leave off those you don’t, and you only have to upgrade bits one at a time. An awesome idea, right? Yeah, but you’re going to need to put up with one ugly phone to get it.

Look-aside, the basics behind Phonebloks are solid. The whole venture is very Maker-inspired and will appeal to Do-It-Yourselfers and hardcore phone geeks. Consumers will be able to buy pre-made phones or assemble their own, blok by blok, using components found in the Blokstore. Here, both large and small hardware makers will get the chance to sell you components ranging from processors and internalstorage to cameras and speakers. It’s akin to an app store, not just because of consumer choice but because anyone will be able to make hardware bloks. The entire platform is open source. see more..

Sydney Leathers crashes sexing partner Anthony Weiner's

Anthony Weiner's ill-fated mayoral campaign ended with a a final embarrassment when his sexting partner Sydney Leathers tried to crash his primary night rally.

Outside a "victory" party where supporters mourned a disappointing fifth-place finish in the Democratic primary, cameras crowded around Leathers, the 23-year-old whose sexting with the former congressman brought his once-high-flying campaign to a screeching halt.

"Why not be here?" Leathers asked reporters. "I'm kind of thereason he's losing. So, might as well show up."

Leathers, who has launched a porn career since the scandal broke, said Weiner needed "to stop being an embarrassment to the city of New York. He's going to continue this behavior. If it's not going to be me, it's going to be some other girl."see more..

AAPL Tank on Iphone 5C Pricing

Apple stock (NASDAQ: AAPL) went on one of its biggest slides of the year after analysts downgraded the shares, saying the new iPhone 5C is not cheap enough for emerging markets and the company is failing to innovate.

Bank of America-Merrill Lynch downgraded Apple (AAPL) to "neutral" from "buy." Similar actions were taken by analysts for Credit Suisse, Piper Jaffray and UBS.
Apple'sstock fell 5.7 percent, or $28, mid-day on Wednesday to $466.64.
During Tuesday's highly-covered media event, Apple introduced two new phones with features such as a fingerprint sensor and new operating system, iOS 7. The new iPhone 5S comes in various metallic shades while the cheaper iPhone 5C comes in five plastic colors. see more...

Remembering the Twin Towers as a fixture of the skyline

At first, our go-to documentarian of 1990s New York didn't realize that he'd amassed such an extensive collection of photos of the World Trade Center. Yet, when Gregoire Alessandrini looked back over the hundreds of slides and negatives taken during his seven-year stint as a film student in New York City, he noticed that the towers dominated the backdrop of an unexpected number of street scenes, from so many different angles.
There they were, peeping through the Washington Square Park arch. Or standing tall and proud across the East River, mimicking a couple dancing on the waterfront in the foreground. Or, as so many recall, popping up like an anchor at the southernmost end of an avenue. "I always feel that something is missing in the landscape,"Alessandrini says, "when I'm in the Village and I point mycamera in the direction of downtown Manhattan."
On this day, 12 years after the towers fell, take a look back at how the TwinTowers graced so many urban vistas. see more...

Bill de Blasio Cruises to Victory in New York City

According to early exit polls, de Blasio won across the board, equaling or besting his opponents among black voters, female voters, gay voters, voters who wanted a change, and even voters who approved of the way Bloomberg governed Gotham over the last 12 years.
There are those who have said that our vision for this city is too big, that we are asking of wealthy New Yorkers too much,” de Blasio, the city’s public advocate, told a raucous crowd of supporters at the Bell House, a music venue in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn. “That we have set our sights for our children too high, that we are guilty—guilty, my friends—of thinking too big. But let me say this: We are New Yorkers. Proud citizens of the greatest city on earth. Thinking big isn’t new to us. It is the very foundation of who we are.”

Just after midnight, de Blasio was hovering near the 40 percent threshold necessary to avoid a runoff in three weeks. Bill Thompson, his closest rival, garnered just 26 percent of the vote but vowed to fight on. The winner of a runoff will face Joe Lhota, the former chief of the Metropolitan Transportation Agency and a former aide to Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who easily won the Republican nomination.

The de Blasio election night celebration illustrated just how different his candidacy was. Instead of gathering at a major Midtown hotel to watch the returns, as New York City mayoral campaigns traditionally do, hundreds of supporters turned Gowanus, an industrial neighborhood not far from the candidate’s home in Park Slope, into a political street party with outdoor grilling, music-making, free-flowing beer, and supporters glued to television screens. Inside the Bell House, where the indie pop duo Ted Leo and Aimee Mann were slated to play the next night, de Blasio supporters cheered as returns showed a victory looking ever more likely. see more...
