Nik Wallenda completes walk across gorge near Grand Canyon

Florida aerialist Nik Wallenda completed a tightrope walk that took him a quarter mile over the Little Colorado River Gorge in northeasternArizona on Sunday.
Wallenda performed the stunt on a 2-inch-thick steel cable, 1,500 feet above the river on the Navajo Nation near the Grand Canyon. He took just more than 22 minutes, pausing and crouching twice as winds whipped around him so that he could get "the rhythm out of the rope."
"Thank you Lord. Thank you for calming that cable, God," he said about 13 minutes into the walk.
Wallenda didn't wear a harness and stepped slowly and steady throughout, murmuring prayers to Jesus almost constantly along the way. He jogged and hopped the last few steps.
The event was broadcast live on the Discovery Channel.
Winds blowing across the gorge were expected to be around 30 mph. Wallenda told Discovery after the walk that the winds were at times "unpredictable" and that dust had accumulated on and around his contact lenses.
"It was way more windy and it took every bit of me to stay focused the entire time," he said.
The 34-year-old Wallenda is a seventh-generation high-wire artist and is part of the famous "Flying Wallendas" circus family -- a clan that is no stranger to death-defying feats.
His great-grandfather, Karl Wallenda, fell during a performance in Puerto Rico and died at the age of 73. Several other family members, including a cousin and an uncle, have perished while performing wire walking stunts.
NikWallenda grew up performing with his family and has dreamed of crossing the Grand Canyon since he was a teenager.
Sunday's stunt comes a year after he traversed Niagara Falls earning a seventh Guinness world record.
Wallenda wore a microphone and two cameras, one that looked down on the dry Little Colorado River bed and one that faced straight ahead. His leather shoes with an elk-skin sole helped him keep a grip on the steel cable as he moved across.
About 600 spectators watching on a large video screen on site cheered him on as he walked toward them.
Before the walk, a group of Navajos, Hopis and other Native Americans stood along a nearby highway with signs protesting the event.
The stunt was touted as a walk across the Grand Canyon, an area held sacred by many American Indian tribes. Some local residents believe Wallenda hasn't accurately pinpointed the location and also said that the Navajo Nation shouldn't be promoting the gambling of one man's life for the benefit of tourism.
"Mr. Wallenda needs to buy a GPS or somebody give this guy a map," said Milton Tso, president of the Cameron community on the Navajo Nation. "He's not walking across the Grand Canyon. He's walking across the Little Colorado River Gorge on the Navajo Nation. It's misleading and false advertising."
Discovery's 2-hour broadcast showcased the Navajo landscape that includes Monument Valley, Four Corners, Canyon de Chelly and the tribal capital of Window Rock.
"When people watch this, our main thing is we want the world to know who Navajo people are, our culture, traditions and language are still very much alive," Geri Hongeva, spokeswoman for the tribe's Division of Natural Resources, said before the walk.

Nelson Mandela former president of South Africa is in critical condition

Nelson Mandela was in critical condition Sunday after a deterioration in his health, and doctors "are doing everything possible'' for him, South Africa's government said.

The office of President Jacob Zuma said that on Sunday evening the president had visited Mandela, the former president of the country who was imprisoned for nearly three decades as he battled the country's apartheid system of racial separatism.
Zuma'soffice said he was informed by Mandela's doctors that his condition had become critical in the past 24 hours.
Mandela, 94, has been in intensive care for more than two weeks. He was hospitalized on June 8 for what the government said was a recurring lung infection.
"The doctors are doing everything possible to get his condition to improve and are ensuring that Madiba is well-looked after and is comfortable,'' Zuma said in a statement. "He is in good hands."
Madiba is Mandela's tribal nickname.
Zuma visited Mandela along with ANC Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa visited Mandela. Zuma also met Graca Machel, Mandela's wife, at the hospital and discussed the former leader's condition, according to the statement.
Zuma appealed to South Africans and the rest of the world to pray for Mandela, his family and his medical team. Mandela turns 95 on July 18.
On Saturday, it was reported that the ambulance carrying Mandela to the hospital June 8 broke down while he was on board, requiring that he be moved to a second vehicle. Zuma said he had been assured "all care was taken to ensure his medical condition was not compromised.''
"There were seven doctors in the convoy who were in full control of the situation throughout the period. He had expert medical care. The fully equipped military ICU ambulance had a full complement of specialist medical staff including intensive care specialists and ICU nurses. The doctors also dismissed the media reports that Madiba suffered cardiac arrest. There is no truth at all in that report," Zuma said in a statement released by spokesman Mac Maharaj.
Mandela became South Africa's first black president after the end of apartheid in 1994. He retired from public life in 2004 and has rarely been seen at official events since. He has been seen around the world as a leader of the movement for human rights and reconciliation.

Celtics and Clippers reach agreement for Doc Rivers

Ken Berger of CBSSports.com reports the Clippers and Celtics have reached an agreement to release coach Doc Rivers from his contract with the Celtics and allow him to sign with Los Angeles in exchange for a 2015 first-round draft pick.

The Clippers have also agreed to pick up the three-years and $21 million left on his current contract.

Berger reports that the league will allow the deal to send the pick to Boston in exchange for releasing Rivers, but will not allow any subsequent trade that involves Kevin Garnett. The league would view any such trade as disallowable under the current CBA which does not allow for players to be exchanged in any deal involving coaches.

The league had made it clear they would not budge even if the two teams split the deal into two components, with one the aforementioned deal and the separate a player-packed deal in exchange for Garnett, with some of the assets intended as compensation for Rivers as well as Garnett in a packag deal.

So it would appear, for the moment, that Garnett is stranded on the Celtics while Doc Rivers paddles to contention with the Clippers. The deal is believed to ensure that Chris Paul re-signs with the Clippers in July as a free agent in a five-year max deal.

The deal comes after over a week of sustained negotiations between the two teams with multiple instances of one team or the other walking away from a deal. In the end, Rivers didn't want to stay, and CelticsGM Danny Ainge wasn't going to hold him to it.

Rivers and Danny Ainge had scheduled a press conference for last Friday afternoon that was canceled at the last minute and rescheduled for Monday. Depending on what happens over the next few hours, that press conference could be about something entirely different.

Leafs acquire Jonathan Bernier from Kings

Looking to solidify their goaltending, theToronto Maple Leafs on Sunday acquired Jonathan Bernier from the Los Angeles Kings.
Bernier had been stuck behind Jonathan Quick in Los Angeles. The Maple Leafs, according to general manager Dave Nonis, were interested in upgrades at any position.
''I think it's incumbent upon every team to look at what's available and if there is an ability to improve you look to do it,'' Nonis said last week after the GM's meetings in Boston.
Toronto gave up forward MattFrattin, backup goaltender BenScrivens and a second-round pick in the 2014 or 2015 NHL entry draft.
The 24-year-old Bernier is eligible to become a restricted free agent. He played in 14 regular-season games for the Kings in 2012-13, compiling a 9-3-1 record with a goals-against average of 1.88 and save percentage of .922.
Kings assistant GM Ron Hextall said the deal had been ''ongoing for months.''
''It's kind of bittersweet. Jon's been with us a long time. He's been a great soldier for us and he's been a very good player for us,'' Hextall said in a video on the Kings' website.
''Unfortunately, he's stuck behind Jonathan Quick, which is a tough situation for Jon. As a sense of fairness to him and at the timing that we felt was the best for the organization, we made the move.''
Scrivens, 26, played 20 games for the Maple Leafs this past season with a 7-9 record. Frattin, 25, had seven goals and six assists in 25 regular-season games for the Leafs in 2012-13.
''Just want to thank MapleLeafs for a first class experience to start my pro career,'' Frattin tweeted. ''Very excited to join LAKings.''
Bernier was taken by the Kings in the first round (11th overall) of the 2006 draft. He played in 62 career regular-season games with the Kings, compiling a 29-20-6 record, .912 save percentage, 2.36 goals-against-average and six shutouts.
The trade raises questions about the status of James Reimer, who was Toronto's No. 1. The Maple Leafs signed the 25-year-old Reimer to a three-year contract extension in June 2011.
Bernier made $1.5 million this season compared with $1.6 million for Reimer. Frattin earned $850,000 while Scrivens made $600,000.
Toronto's situation in goal has been unsettled in recent years with the likes of Reimer, Jonas Gustavsson, Jean-Sebastien Giguere, Andrew Raycroft, Vesa Toskala and Justin Pogge.
Reimer, whose career has been slowed by injuries, went 19-18-5 this season with a 2.46 goals-against average and .934 save percentage. He also helped the Leafs take the Bruins to the seventh game of the opening round of the playoffs.
The Bruins won, with former Maple Leafs draft choice Tuukka Rask starring for Boston in the playoffs.

Lil Snupe knew his alleged killer

Emergingrapper Lil Snupe, a recent signee to Meek Mill's Dream Chaser's label, was shot and killed early Thursday morning (June 20) in Winnfield, La.

Police say 18-year-old Addarren Ross was killed around 4:00 a.m. at the Maplewood Apartments in Winnfield, according to CBS affiliate KNOE 8. Ross, known as Lil Snupe, had two gunshot wounds.
Earlier reports that Snupe was killed during the course of a dice game are false, said Lt. Charles M. Curry of the Winnfield Police Department. The official didconfirm with NBC33, Baton Rouge's NBC affiliate, that the rapper knew his alleged killer.
"We're working diligently to investigate this case and track down the suspect," he said.
The suspect's name has not been released out of respect for the family.
Winnfield (pop. 4,840) is located about an hour north of Alexandria in the heart of the state. It's not immediately known why Snupe was in the small town. Sources tell Billboard the artist may have been living in Baton Rouge while some previous articles written about the young rapper have listed Jonesboro, La., about 80 miles east of Shreveport, as his hometown.
In freestyle raps posted online, Snupe has name-dropped "225" -- the Baton Rouge area code.
His manager, DJ Smallz and Dream Chasers' Louie V Gutta tweeted of LilSnupe's death this morning.
I aint gone lie i cant stop crying! I Can't Believe My Youngin Gone! RIP lil bro@LilSnupe
Louie V Gutta (@LouieVGutta) June 20, 2013
Meek Mill signed Snupe to Dream Chasers last year after listening to his mixtape for 20 minutes, the late Louisiana rapper told MTV News in February. "He was in a van, they was finna pull off. And I went and knocked on the van, on the window. They let the window down, grabbed the mixtape and it was like 10 minutes later, 20 minutes later they called me," he said.
"He was spittin' so much pain, he's from the south with a flow like an east coast guy," Meek told MTV.
Snupe repped his home state in his last tweet, "i Hold it Down 4 Louisiana."

Miley Cyrus new album “ We Can't Stop”

Miley Cyrus debuted the music video for her latest single, "We Can't Stop," this week, but that isn't stopping the Ministry from asking her to stop anyway.
When she isn't generating gossip fodder with her on-again-off-againengagement to Liam Hemsworth, making quizzical drug innuendos or tirelessly working to besmirch her once squeaky-clean Disney-girl image, she makes music. And music videos.
And this latest one isn't answering any questions about the former "Hannah Montana" star. It seems to make viewers wonder what shocking thing she plans on doing next, you know, just for the sake of making us go "huh?"
In the wise words of Miss Cyrus, "It's my mouth, I can say what Iwant to." The video debuted Wednesday and already had more than 6.3 million page views by Thursday. (A few were shamefully contributed by this blogger for the purposes of this post.)
It's no vending-machine cameo in JimmyKimmel's "(I Wanna) Channing All Over Your Tatum," but it definitely has weird written all over it. At least "Tatum" was made as a satire.

Shailene Woodley cut from 'Spiderman' sequel

It looks like Peter Parker will have to find another redhead to playfully call him "tiger."
ShaileneWoodley's role as one of Spider-Man's greatest love interests, MaryJane Watson, has been cut from the upcoming "The AmazingSpider-Man" sequel, according to a statement from the film's director, Marc Webb.
"I made a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship," Webb said. "Shailene is an incredibly talented actress and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her."
Woodley - who is well known from her acclaimed performance in 2011's "TheDescendants" and from the lead role in "The Secret Life ofthe American Teenager" - is considerably "bummed" about not being able to sling webs with everyone's favorite neighborhood wall crawler, but ultimately understands Webb's decision.
"Of course I'm bummed," Woodley told EntertainmentWeekly. "But I am a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason. MJ only appeared in a few scenes and I wouldn't trade the experience of working with Andrew [Garfield] and Emma [Stone] for three days on set for the world."

The exclusion of Mary Jane is telling, however. Comic book fans will remember that Peter and Gwen's relationship (spoilerat the link) doesn't exactly end well, which could open up a return for MJ (and possibly Woodley) in the just announced third and fourth films.
"Based on the proposed plot, I completely understand the need for holding off on introducing MJ until the next film," Woodley said.
