WGST returns June 3, all syndicated with Glenn Beck, Dave Ramsey

Clear Channel Atlanta dumped news/talk 640/WGST-AM in late September in favor of a syndicated sports Hispanic talk format ESPN Desportes. But it has changed its mind after a mere eight months.

On June 3, the company plans to bring WGST back - but without Rush Limbaugh, which had been the station's most popular host for many years.

Limbaugh moved to AM750 and 95.5FM News/Talk WSB.

This latest incarnation of WGST has dumped any local programming during weekdays, opting for all syndication.
But WGST will be bringing back both Glenn Beck (9 a.m. to noon) and Dave Ramsey (2 p.m. to 6 p.m.). Both shows are currently on 1160/WCFO-AM. (Jeff Davis, who runs that station, declined to comment after informed of this news.)

AndreaTantaros, who is part of the Fox News' "The Five," will be the syndicated host from noon to 2 p.m. The Wall Street Journal This Morning will be the morning show.

ESPNDesportes has been bringing in a fraction of what WGST had been drawing before the change. ESPN drew just a 0.2 rating in January and February but increased to 0.4 in March. In comparison, WGST was bringing in a 1.2 to 1.5 through the first nine months of 2012.
GST had tried local talk in two dayparts in 2011-12: mornings and afternoon, including Rob Johnson in mornings and RustyHumphries in afternoons. It didn't impact ratings all that much.

For many fans of GST, the station had become a shadow of its former self by 2012.  Many still miss Kim "the Kimmer" Peterson and Tom Hughes. The station's heyday was the 1990s when it had the Braves and competed with WSB aggressively. An FM simulcast that reached into the outer burbs helped. But it was in steady retreat through the 2000s after it lost the FM simulcast.

Glenn Beck Reveals Controversial Intel on Saudi National Once Suspect in Boston Bombings

After highlighting that some of his sources are now under threat of 20-yearprison terms, conservative political commentator Glenn Beck revealed intelligence on Monday that questions the exoneration of a Saudinational once considered a suspect in the Boston bombings by federalagents.

"We don't know at this point how he was involved … but I do know he was involved," said Beck on The Blaze TV.

"You can ask yourself this question, 'How many times does lightning have to strike in the first place for this guy to be at the scene of the crime and in the hospital and not be involved?" he added.

Last week, Beck primed his audience for the explosive revelation of the story that could be the most important story "of our lifetime."

Claiming that he wanted the federal government to come clean with the Americanpeople, he gave them until this Monday to tell the truth about the Saudi national. In referring to the former suspect, he said: "We know [he] is a very bad, bad, bad man," while flipping three fingers indication three unspoken reasons why.

On Monday, when federal authorities failed to respond to his ultimatum, Beck revealed the questionable circumstances under which Saudi national Abdul Rahman Ali Issa Al-Salimi Al-Harbi, or Alharbi was downgraded from a dangerous suspected terrorist to essentially a "nobody" by federal authorities.

In his report, Beck disclosed that Al-Harbi was first identified as a person of interest in the Boston bombings and noted that the U.S.Customs and Border Protection's National Targeting Center had issued an event file recommending his deportation under section 212, 3B indication "proven terrorist activity."

"We are not sure who actually tagged him as a '212 3B,' but we know it is very difficult to charge someone with this — it has to be almost certain," Beck explained. "It is the equivalent in civil society of charging someone with premeditated murder and seeking the death penalty — it is not thrown around lightly."

Beck further explained that Secretary of State John Kerry later met with Saudi Foreign Minister Saud last Tuesday then the FBI began "backtracking on the Saudi national from suspect, to person of interest, to witness, to victim, to nobody," according to TheBlaze report.

Then last Wednesday, President Barack Obama reportedly had a "chance" encounter with Saudi Foreign Minister Saud and Saudi Ambassador Adelal-Jubeir. Later that day, Al-Harbi's event file was altered.

"Wednesday at 5:35 p.m. the file is altered," explained Beck in his report. "This is unheard of, this is impossible in the timeline due to the severity of the charge …. You don't one day put a 212 3B charge against somebody with deportation, and then the next day take it off. It would require too much to do it."

Among other evidence, Beck pointed out that the Saudi national was once flagged on a terror watch list but was granted a student visa to enter the U.S. Anyway.

In another report from Okaz.com and translated for The Blaze by Steven Miller, a research associate with the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, Al-Harbi allegedly says federal authorities only asked him about what he saw during the bombings, apologized and promised him "special health care."

"He clarified that security officials asked him to focus on what he saw before the bombings, and on the nature of the event [to see] if he remembers what happened around him … he thanked American authorities who refuted media allegations about his status as a suspect …," according to the report.

Beck promised on his show that there is more intelligence to be revealed possibly well into next week.

Ryan Lochte Prepped For New Reality Show By Watching The Kardashians

As of Sunday night, Ryan Lochte is no longer just an Olympic athlete; he is a reality TV star. Lochte is no stranger to diligent training, but prepping for life on the small screen as star of E!'s "What Would Ryan Lochte Do?" was quite the change. Instead of spending hours practicing in the pool, Ryan prepped on the couch by watching "Keeping Up With the Kardashians."

According to Lochte, his first response to finding out about his TV show was "that's awesome," followed closely by seeking lessons from the girls with the ultimate reality-show success story, the Kardashians.

"I wanted to prepare myself, so that's when I started watching the Kardashians' show, to just know what to expect when I start shooting for my show," Lochte said.

But watching the Kardashians' show was not all research for Ryan — he also looks up to Kim. (Like Kim, Ryan has dabbled in fashion — designing shoes, suits, swimsuits and shirts — but wants to wait to start anything serious until he "hangs up his Speedo.") "I have the most respect for her; she started from the bottom, now she's here," Ryan explained to MTV News, using Drake's newest song hook when asked if he'd like to follow in her footsteps.

"What I mean by that is she pretty much started from nothing and now she can't walk down the street without someone taking a picture or noticing her. I mean, who wouldn't want that? That's awesome. So did I mean that? Yeah, that's pretty cool." Unfortunately for Ryanand Kim fans, Kardashian will not be making any cameos on "WWRLD" because the two have never met.
As Lochte begins his television career, Kim will likely be taking some time away from hers as she nears the end of her pregnancy. As her new channel-mate, Ryan explains that since she's part of the E! family, she might get some "little Lochte shoes" from him as a baby gift, or, if appropriate, a baby Speedo. In that case, perhaps the birth of Kim's baby will finally lead Kardashian and Lochte to meet face to face. In the meantime, Ryan has plenty to keep him busy — not just the first season of his new show, but the approaching 2016 Olympics.

Folk singer Richie Havens dead at 72

Famed folk singer Richie Havens, the opening act at the 1969 Woodstockmusic festival, died Monday of a sudden heart attack, his publicist said. He was 72.

Havens, who retired three years ago, toured for more than 30 years and recorded 30 albums.
Havens told Billboard that his breakthrough at Woodstock came after another artist's equipment got stuck in traffic. He was supposed to be the fifth act.

"It was 5 o'clock and nothing was happening yet," Havens toldBillboard. "I had the least instruments (to set up on stage) and the least people (in his band)."

So Havens went on and performed for 40 minutes, as planned. Organizers asked him to do four more songs, he told Billboard.

"I went back and did that, then it was, 'Four more songs...' and that kept happening 'til two hours and 45 minutes later, I had sung every song I know," he said.

Havens, a Brooklyn, New York, native, told CNN in 1999 that music enabled him to leave his rough neighborhood to head to Greenwich Village and the music scene there.
Music was always a part of his life.

"I believe I inherited my sense of music from my father. My father was an ear piano player; he could just hear something and play it," he recalls. "I came up in Brooklyn singing doo-wop music from the time I was 13 to the time I was 20. That music served a purpose of keeping a lot of people out of trouble, and also it was a passport from one neighborhood to another."

His inspiration for songs about social change and protest came when he heard artists like Fred Neil, Dino Valenti and Tom Paxton. That's when he knew what he wanted to do with his life.

"It was the songs that actually changed my life," he says. "The songs that I heard were so much different than the doo-wop kind of thing. They were just so powerful. Finally I decided, 'I've got to do this.'"

Before Woodstock, his nights were filled with playing as often as possible to make a few dollars.

"We played three coffeehouses a night, 14 sets a night, 20-minute sets, pass the basket, stay alive," he told CNN. "I was there seven and a half years, every day. It was the most incredibly magic, magic time."

After Havens gained attention at Woodstock, he recorded a soulful-voiced cover of the Beatles' "Here Comes the Sun," which rose on the pop charts in 1970.

Stephen Stills of Crosby, Stills and Nash said Havens was an inspiration for the natural gravel in his singing voice. He called Havens a passionate performer.

"He lit fire when he started playing within the first song and burned exactly the same way throughout his set. And it never stopped, it never changed," Stills said.

He added that he thought Havens' style was probably a little too arcane to appeal to a mass audience.

"But he sure knew what to do when they were begging for someone to go on first, when all those people showed up at Woodstock," Stills said.

Havens returned to Woodstock for the 40th anniversary festival in 2009.

"While his family greatly appreciates that Richie's many fans are also mourning this loss, they do ask for privacy during this difficult time," a statement from his publicist, Carrie Lombardi, said.

Billboard reported Havens died in New Jersey, leaving behind four daughters and five grandchildren.

National Record Store Day 2013: Support Your Local Music Store

While most people are downloading and listening to music on ipods and through online streaming sites like Pandora and Spotify these days — there’s nothing like spending a day in a record store.
Created in 2007 at a gathering of independent record store owners, National Record Store Day is intended to “celebrate and spread the word about the unique culture surrounding over 700 independently owned record stores in the US and thousands of similar stores internationally,” according to RecordStoreDay.com.

Held every third Saturday in April, participating independent record stores across the country offer special vinyl and CD releases and other items are made exclusively for the day.

The first collector ever shot for Dust and Grooves, Joel Oliveira, is seen holding  a Cem Karaca 7-inch record. Originally from Brazil, Oliveira moved to New York City 12 years ago, starting as a shoeshine boy in Grand Central Station. His love for music and vinyl gave him a real hope and purpose in life. He is the guru of psychedelic Brazilian music, and is the owner of “Tropicalia in Furs” record shop in New York City’s East Village

Canelo vs Trout results

Tonight's main event at the raucous Alamadome in San Antonio lived up to the hype in terms of quality, and had what is likely going to be the best atmosphere of any fight in the world this year, as 39,472 fans (official attendance) made it a truly special night on Showtimeboxing.
Canelo Alvarez came out the decision winner over Austin Trout, unifying the WBC and WBA titles by scores of 115-112, 116-111, and 118-109. The WBC's awful open scoring was in effect, so viewers on TV were able to find out that after eight rounds, Trout (26-1, 14 KO) was mathematically out of the fight.

This also allowed Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO) to cruise down the stretch, avoiding risks that he may otherwise have taken had he suspected there was a possibility he could have lost the fight.
It needs to be said that both guys fought well tonight. Canelo did more damage, including putting Trout on the canvas in the seventh round with a beautiful right hand that shook Trout's legs, staggering him to the canvas. It was the first time Trout had been down in his career, and he responded pretty well, with some observers even feeling he did enough in the round to earn a 9-10 score instead of 8-10.

Much of the fight was closely contested, and intense, though rarely exciting in the traditional sense. What stood out in a big way was the defensive work of Canelo Alvarez, whose head movement was much better than ever before, and allowed him to slip a lot of shots. Trout was really unable to connect on anything big, but he also was able to dictate the pace in many rounds, and used his jab to keep the fight at his pace and distance enough that it wouldn't have been hard to score the fight in his favor.

Also notable on that front is that Alvarez, who had the showier moments, did still fight in spurts too often. At times, he looked like the boss, a hard-hitting slugger who could physically push Trout around. At other times, he was stuck in a standstill mode, with Trout maybe not dominating him, but simply doing more work.

It is a hard fight to recap, in that I don't have enormously strong feelings about the outcome. I could see Trout winning, and I could see Canelo winning. It was a good, close fight, a matchup that delivered in the ring as it should have, equaling its on-paper potential.

The only thing I do have a strong opinion on is that open scoring does nobody any favors. The nonsense that it would help eradicate poor judging is clearly just a press release line; it's not like anything has ever been done about bad scores in fights with open scoring. The only difference, really, is that we knew after eight rounds that Trout had lost the fight, unless he managed a miracle knockout. That, to me, both takes the drama out of the fight for a viewer who knows the score, and also allows a fighter to totally change his approach in a fight that looks closer than the scores at ringside are in reality, or at least "reality."

But if there is any great question about the legitimacy of Canelo's win, you only have to ask Trout, who was candid and gracious in defeat.

"He was the better man," Trout told Showtime's Jim Gray. "He was quicker, he was stronger, he was the better man."

Trout said he'd make no excuses. Then, in the upset of the year, he actually made zero excuses. On a night where you could complain about some of what happened on the officiating side (though it should be said that referee Laurence Cole was invisible and did a good job), it was nice to end the evening on a good note. Canelo talked no trash, nor did Trout. They were admirable in victory and defeat.

Alvarezmarches forward as a rising superstar. Trout says he'll be back, and given his track record of going further than he's supposed to, I have to believe him.
