New Man of Steel Trailer Is the Most Promising Yet

OK Superman fans, it might actually be time to push the Man of Steel Anticipation Barometer to CautiouslyOptimistic.

Previous teasers/trailers/Comic-Con sneak peaks for ZackSnyder’s Superman flick have been rather, um, moody? Bleak? Somewhat action-less? Basically, there was a lot of young and old Clark Kent (Henry Cavill) sulking around conflicted about being super-human and stuff. Even when there were explosions and flight scenes, they were still scored with an ominous choir or something. Folks were starting to worry this flick would be a sucker-punch instead of a knock out. But the latest trailer for Man of Steel packs a wallop.

First of all, there’s the destruction of Krypton. It’s just a brief cut, but it’s proof that (presumably) Snyder is coming out of the gate strong. Then there’s General Zod (BoardwalkEmpire’s MichaelShannon) threatening massive destruction and swearing, “I will find him!” Then there’s all the city-saving, speeding-bullet-beating and flying – so much flying! (Also, was that Zod that got punched in the face mid-flight? Even if it wasn’t, that was kind of awesome.) Apparently, when Snyder told Entertainment Weekly “there’s no kryptonite in the movie” he meant there was nothing holding back the man with the “S” on his chest.

So basically this is the Man of Steel trailer everyone’s been waiting for. Sure, there’s still plenty of mood and whatnot, but this one balances all the feels with some big bang (and a lot more Lois Lane/Amy Adams)Manof Steel is still a little ways off – it opens June 14 – but it’s starting to look like it’s worth the wait.

Ricin can Kill in 36-48 hours

Ricin is a natural, highly toxic compound that is one of the byproducts of processing castor beans.

If inhaled, injected or ingested, less than a pinpoint of ricin can kill a person within 36 to 48 hours due to the failure of the respiratory and circulatory systems.

There is no known cure.

One molecule of ricin will kill a cell it enters.

Ricin ingestion is not always fatal. Children are at more risk than adults.

If ingested, ricin causes nausea, vomiting and internal bleeding of the stomach and intestines, followed by the failure of the liver, spleen and kidneys, and finally death by collapse of the circulatory system.

If a castor bean seed is swallowed whole without damage to the seed coat, it will probably pass harmlessly through the system. But if the coat is chewed or broken, then swallowed, the poison will enter the body.

If injected, ricin causes the immediate death of the muscles and lymph nodes near the site of the injection. Failure of the major organs and death usually follows.

Medical experts point out that ricin is nowhere near as powerful a killer as anthrax.

Corbin Bernsen: I’d rather talk about God than Lindsay Lohan

For younger audiences Corbin Bernsen is known as retired police detective Henry Spencer in the USA’s hit show, “Psych,” but to those a little older he’ll forever be the lovable Arnie Becker in “L.A.Law.” In the late 1980s and early ‘90s the ruggedly handsome actor appeared on more than 50 magazine covers and hosted “SaturdayNight Live.” The 58-year-old actor spoke to FOX 411 about his career, marriage and faith.

FOX 411: Besides “Psych” what else have you got going on?
Bernsen: I have a tech project on the side called Powsumer. I had this vision where say 50 people want a TV at this price and what we do is bring the seller to that group of people. I have a production company called Home Theater Films which makes faith based films.

FOX 411: Are you born again?
Bernsen: That’s not where I put myself. I consider myself a Christian. It’s the kind of thing I struggle with. I have faith, I believe in God… All I know is I march to my own drummer these days. I stay true to myself and there’s a lot of people who want faith in their lives and I’m more about that. I would like to bring them into the discussion.I am certainly on a journey of discussion. We’re have a conversation about it and in these days where there’s so much in the world that’s not working and somehow we’ve used faith and religion as a glue for society, something that’s made things work, not drive things apart, I feel there’s a need to celebrate that for the good of what it is. It gets so much bad press. There’s an assumption if you have any faith you vote a certain way or you’re a conservative and that’s not true. There are very cool, relevant people who have faith in their lives and people who want to have faith who are afraid to enter the conversation. That’s all I care about, entering the conversation. I have four sons who are basically growing up in a world where basically they don’t believe… that’s not good either. So I’m not saying you have to believe in God or Christ, just come into the conversation for a bit…I find it far more interesting than say, talking about Lindsay Lohan.

FOX 411: Back in the late ’80s you were the “It” boy for a while.
Bernsen: For a while, you’re starting to make me feel like a has-been! Actually “L.A. Law” has been a bit of a blessing and a curse. First of all it was a very prestigious show that had a lot of intellect and I was the pretty boy. I’ve had to battle that my whole career, “Oh you were the face guy. You didn’t really have to act, you just had to wear the right suits.” I had to battle that.

FOX 411:  You’ve been married a long time [to British actress Amanda Pays]. What’s the secret?
Bernsen: It’s been 25 years this November. Friendship absolutely, first and foremost. All the other stuff like sex, it comes and goes in waves. After two or three years the honeymoon is over. The thing that keeps you going when things relax a bit is the friendship. When you celebrate that friendship that’s when it reignites the passion. I don’t have a bunch of mates. I don’t have a man cave. My wife and I, we are each other’s best friend.I’m very fortunate that I have a gorgeous wife that I’m still completely attracted to and love to get naked with at every possible moment.

FOX 411: Being in a house of men has your wife ever entered a bathroom without the toilet seat up?
Bernsen: She loves it. We have this unique beautiful thing.

FOX 411:  I know! I’m just talking about toilet seats!
Bernsen: I put it down. Mind you I tried to get a urinal in our bathroom when we built our house.

FOX 411:  That’s a great idea.
Bernsen: I think it would be great for the middle of the night piss. I don’t know why more people don’t do that.

Law and Politics: Obama’s new Gitmo problem

While the Guantánamo Bay prison camp has faded as a political issue, the conditions there have been dramatically deteriorating. For several months, prisoners have been mounting intense protests, in response to grievances with guards and frustration with their legal status. They have conducted hunger strikes, battled with guards, and thwarted the camp’s surveillance system.

On Saturday, U.S. officials decided the prisoners had gone too far. Officials raided the camp, emptying prison cells, and forcing some detainees into isolation.

The Miami Herald’s CarolRosenberg, who has covered Guantánamo for over a decade, reports that while the U.S. has sought to provide more humanitarian conditions for detainees, the recent tensions reflect frustration with the endless legal limbo in the camp:

By the time President Barack Obama took office, the prison camps had established communal confinement in a prison called Camp 6 that was more in the spirit of the Geneva Conventions, with … TV, books and, for well-behaved captives, wristwatches…But [there have been] mounting tensions at the camp… following a particularly aggressive cell search held Feb. 6.
Lawyers for the captives said a wide-ranging hunger strike was underway, and some described seeing long-held, once plump prisoners wasting away before their eyes. The strike, they said, was sparked by what the captives considered abusive searches of their Qurans … fueled by years of frustration at their status of legal limbo.

Rosenberg reports that there are 43 prisoners on hunger strike. The U.S. is now force-feeding 13 of them, in order to keep them alive. The guards have also lost a measure of “control over life” in the prison, Rosenberg reports: ”The captives could be seen systematically disobeying communal camp rules. They covered surveillance cameras in individual cells with cereal boxes. They refused to admit food carts to the cellblocks.”

Obama officials emphasize that they had advance notice about recent changes at the prison, such as moving detainees into individual cells, and they are monitoring developments closely. That may be fine for crisis management, but there is very little talk about actually addressing the core problems at Guantánamo Bay.

About 166prisoners remain in the camp today. That reflects progress–over 700 men have been imprisoned there–but also stalemate. Twelve years after the Afghanistan war began, these remaining prisoners are people who have been cut off from their entire world, mostly without any trial to address the charges against them, let alone their guilt or innocence. And that’s not all.

It is well known that many detainees are not high-ranking terrorists. As early as 2003, Donald Rumsfeld privately objected to how many “low-level enemy combatants” wound up in the prison. According to a comprehensive 2006 analysis of Defense Department data, most detainees were not affiliated with terrorist groups. (The report was from Seton Hall University, applying a terrorist definition was based on the U.S. government’s terrorist list.) A high error rate, of course, does not mean the prison should just be emptied.

Nor could it, since Congress severely restricted the Obamaadministration’s options for transferring detainees. As one former National Security Council official told me last year, “Congress has put up as many roadblocks as possible to keep the Guantanamo Bayprison open.”

So the prison stays open, while the door to fair trials is pretty much closed.  A reassessment of Guantánamo justice is long overdue.

Brownies Recipe

Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F. Butter and flour an 8-inch square pan.
In a mixer fitted with a whisk attachment, beat the eggs at medium speed until fluffy and light yellow. Add both sugars. Add remaining ingredients, and mix to combine.
Pour the batter into a greased and floured 8-inch square pan and bake for 45 minutes. Check for doneness with the tried-and-true toothpick method: a toothpick inserted into the center of the pan should come out clean. When it's done, remove to a rack to cool. Resist the temptation to cut into it until it's mostly cool.

Man dies after shooting self at NASCAR race in Texas, medical examiner says

A medical examiner says a man who died in the infield during a NASCARrace at Texas Motor Speedway shot himself in the head.
The Tarrant County medical examiner's office on Sunday said the death of 42-year-old Kirk Franklin of Saginaw was a suicide.

Fort Worth police have said a man who was camping in the infield died of a "self-inflicted injury" after getting into an argument with other campers. The incident happened late in the Spring Cup race.

Police spokeswoman Cpl. Tracey Knight has said alcohol may have been a factor. Knight said several people witnessed the incident, but nobody was in danger.

Track spokesman Mike Zizzo say the death occurred "in or around apickup truck" in part of the infield near the middle of the backstretch.
