Rapid Reaction : Chicago Bears

A few thoughts on the Chicago Bears38-31 win over the Cleveland Brownson Sunday at FirstEnergy Stadium.

What it means: Jay Cutler shook off a horrid beginning with three touchdown passes to go with a passer rating of 102.2 to keep the Bears in the mix in the NFC North title race. What’s more, there’s a chance the Detroit Lions could help out the Bears on Monday night against the Baltimore Ravens. If the Lions defeat the Ravens, they’ll remain ahead of the Bears by a half-game in the NFC North standings with just two contests left to play. But if Detroit falls, the Bears will lead the division, with a realistic shot at winning it.
Almost a statistical anomaly: Typically the Bears win games when they score defensive touchdowns. But the club nearly bucked that trend in Cleveland.
Coming into the game, the Bears had won 11 consecutive games when they scored a defensive touchdown. So when Zack Bowman helped the Bears score 14 points in just 1 minute, 41 seconds to turn a 10-3 halftime deficit into 17-10 lead with his 43-yard interception return at the 13:48 mark of the third quarter, it appeared the visitors were well on the way to yet another victory by way of a defensive score. After all, since 2005, the Bears had racked up a 25-2 record in games they scored a defensive TD. The record is now 26-2, but an offense that allowed the Browns to score two defensive touchdowns almost ruined that.
Score TDs, don’t give them up: Chicago’s offense is supposed to score touchdowns, not surrender them. But the Bears nearly negated a decent performance by the struggling defense when they granted Cleveland’s defense a couple of freebie touchdowns. Cutler started the giveaway party in the second quarter by throwing an interception that was returned 44 yards for a touchdown by Tashaun Gipson that put the Browns up 10-3.

Breaking down the 2014 Heisman Trophy race

Even if the 2013 ceremony has only just wrapped up, it's not too early to begin looking ahead to next year's Heisman Trophy competition.
Leading the way, of course, is this year's winner: Jameis Winston returns for another go at the trophy, much like his Heisman predecessor, Johnny Manziel, and should be viewed as the top contender heading into the 2014 season.
But he won't be alone. Even if this year's Heisman race loses a handful of strong challengers – like AJ McCarron, Andre Williams and Jordan Lynch, among many others – there are a slew of qualified candidates set to return next fall.

Marcos Maidana stuns Adrien Broner for welterweight belt

Marcos Maidana had a resounding answer to "The Problem" on Saturday night.
The Argentine slugger came out swinging from the opening bell, knocked Adrien "The Problem" Broner down twice and stunned the boxing world by handing Broner his first career loss. Maidana won a unanimous decision to take Broner's WBA welterweight title before a raucous crowd of 11,312 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
Broner (27-1, 22 KOs) was put on the defensive by Maidana from the start of the Showtime-televised bout. He was hurt badly in the second round and went down after a staggering left hand from Maidana (35-3, 31 KOs), nicknamed "El Chino." Broner barely survived the round. It was the first time in his career that the 24-year-old from Cincinnati had been down. It wouldn't be the last.
Broner, a three-division champion who was defending his welterweight belt for the first time, went down again in the eighth off another crushing left hand by Maidana, who then inexplicably head-butted Broner intentionally and had a point taken away by referee Laurence Cole. Broner acted like he was badly hurt, flopping onto the canvas. Cole wasn't buying it, however, and brought the fighters back together after a few minutes.

Midshipmen rout Cadets, 34-7, for 12th consecutive victory in series

The Navy football team got another virtuoso performance from quarterback Keenan Reynolds, and the defense turned in one of its finest outings of the season for a 34-7 victory over Army on a snowy and rainy Saturday afternoon in front of 65,612 at Lincoln Financial Field.
Reynolds was named MVP after carrying 30 times for 136 yards and three touchdowns, the second of which came with 6 minutes 22 seconds left in regulation and set the NCAA single-season record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback. The sophomore also caught the two-point conversion following the touchdown to put the Midshipmen comfortably ahead 28-7 as they extended their record series winning streak to 12.

Alex Steen , Blues face strunggling Maple Leafs

The high-scoring Alexander Steen was once a first-round draft pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs, who could have used his help in recent games.
The St. Louis Blues winger will instead try for another successful performance against the Maple Leafs on Thursday (8 p.m. ET.)

Toronto (16-13-3) has posted one of the lowest goal-scoring averages in the league (2.09) during its 3-6-2 stretch and has a combined three goals in back-to-back losses. The Leafs outshot visiting Los Angeles 39-23 on Wednesday, but Cody Franson had the only goal in a 3-1 loss.

Toronto gave up two goals in the final 11 minutes and has been outscored 15-3 in the final periods of its last 11 games.

"They're down because we had so many opportunities, so many offensive chances," coach Randy Carlyle said. "If we continue to apply that type of work ethic, we'll win our share of games, but it's like pushing a snowball. Every time you lose, it gets bigger."

The Blues (20-6-3), meanwhile, have won two of three after Kevin Shattenkirk scored the tiebreaking goal with 3:02 remaining in Tuesday's 2-1 victory in Winnipeg.

"We outfought for three pucks just to get that opportunity, which is what happened for the whole third period, which was really impressive," coach Ken Hitchcock said. "As the game wore on, our confidence

Bell , Sooners excel on final drive

It would have been hard to find anyone not dressed in crimson and cream who were expecting Oklahoma to cruise down the field in less than two minutes to score the game-winning touchdown in the Sooners’ 33-24 win over Oklahoma State last Saturday.

OU’s offense had three passing first downs and was averaging 4.63 yards per play before that final drive. Yet, the Sooners matched their previous output with three first downs on the final drive, averaging 7.13 yards per play on an eight-play scoring march (they added a defensive touchdown on the game’s final play).

Here’s a closer look at five key plays, after a film study review of the game, that transformed the Sooners from a potential three-loss squad to BCS bowl participant.
Sterling Shepard’s 9-yard catch on the drive’s first play. A good play call and design got Shepard loose on a receiver screen pass. The sophomore faked outside on a swing pass then dipped inside to catch the ball with three blockers ahead of him. Only a terrific tackle by OSU linebacker Joe Mitchell kept the play from being a big gainer. It was the perfect way to start the drive because it gave Blake Bell and the rest of the Sooners’ offense immediate confidence.

Colin Kaepernick, 49ers overcome rival Seahawks , 19-17

Colin Kaepernick has slayed his boogeyman.
The San Francisco 49ers quarterback got his first win against the Seattle Seahawks in his third start against the 49ers' despised NFC West rival.
Kaepernick got plenty Sunday in the 19-17 victory: four field goals from Phil Dawson, including the 22-yard game-winner with 26 seconds remaining, set up by a 51-yard run by running back Frank Gore.
San Francisco's win might not do much to change the division — the Seahawks (11-2) still have a two-game lead with three weeks remaining — but it certainly sent a message: This rivalry is very much alive.

Adrian Peterson has foot sprain

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson suffered a sprained foot during Sunday's loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
Peterson, who said he is experiencing pain in his mid-foot area, is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday after X-rays were negative.
The NFL's reigning MVP said he does not believe the injury is season-ending.
"Not at all. You should've seen me in here, trying to get back out there," Peterson said. "I kept my pads on throughout most of the third quarter, until I finally was like, 'I'm not going to be able to go.'
"I'm just going to get the MRI done tomorrow, see what it says, and try to push to be ready to play."
Peterson was carted to the locker room after suffering the injury early in the second quarter of Minnesota's 29-26 loss.
Peterson was tackled by Baltimore'sArthur Brown on a third-down reception from Matt Cassel, and fumbled out of bounds as he tried to stretch for a first down.

"I was trying to get the first down," Peterson said. "After that, I didn't know what happened to the football. I was more worried about my ankle."
Peterson immediately rolled over in pain and had to be helped off the field. He was taken to the locker room in a cart after doctors examined his leg on the sideline.

Roy Halladay retires as a Blue Jay

Roy Halladay has retired from baseball, as first reported by Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com.
The long-time ace announced his retirement in a Blue Jays press conference Monday during the MLB Winter Meetings, in which he also announced he signed a one-day contract with Toronto, so he can retire as a Blue Jay.

Halladay, 36, is coming off two injury-riddled campaigns where he failed to live up to his previously high standard of excellence on the hill. This past season he was 4-5 with a 6.82 ERA, which followed a year in which he was 11-8 with a 4.45 ERA.

Though shoulder woes were a problem in those two years, Halladay mentioned during his press conference that back issues were the reason for his retirement and that his shoulder feels healthy.

Those two injury-marred years do not, however, take away from an extraordinary career. Halladay ends up 203-105 with a 3.38 ERA (131 ERA+), 1.18 WHIP and 2,117 strikeouts in 2,749 1/3 innings. He also had 67 complete games, 20 shutouts and a perfect game.

"He was one of the best competitors who ever played this game and taught everyone around him to prepare the right way in order to be the best," said former teammate Cole Hamels. "For me, personally, he helped me understand the game more and gave me insight on how to become a top of the line starting pitcher."

In five career postseason starts, Halladay had a 2.37 ERA, 0.74 WHIP and one no-hitter -- which came in his first career postseason start.

Amazing Race Winners Jason and Amy : We're Still Speechless

Second is the best, right? After six runner-up finishes on The Amazing Race 23, Jason and Amy won the leg that mattered and the $1 million on Sunday's finale. "We definitely did not want to break the record of most second-place finishes!" Amy tells TVGuide . The couple ran a near-perfect final leg and had such a huge lead that "something would've had to have gone horribly wrong" for them to lose. Find out how far ahead they were, why they helped Travis and Nicole so much, and what they'll do with the money.

Congratulations! How does it feel now that everyone knows?

Amy:
Oh my goodness! It was such an unbelievable experience [watching the episode]. We had our family, our friends, and some of the cast was there. We had a mini-reunion this weekend. It really was such a special night to share with everyone.

Jason:
Having the cast fly in and watching the last episode just completed the whole experience of the Race. We really created great friendships with everyone on the Race. Having them support us meant a lot. I want to say a big "thank you" to them for that.

Peyton Manning , Matt Prater power Broncos by Titans into playoffs

Peyton Manning and Matt Prater were more about big numbers than the little one Sunday.
As in, an NFL-record 64-yard field goal to go along with 39 completions, 397 yards passing and, of course, 51 points.
That the temperature was only 18 degrees at kickoff and only 14 when Prater kicked his way to one of the most iconic records in the game felt more annoying than anything. Same for the opponent — the Tennessee Titans, who fought gamely for a half before falling 51-28 on Sunday to the Broncos, who clinched a playoff berth.
As for all those doubts about Manning's abilities in the cold: "I won't try to answer it because I didn't give it any validation in the first place," said the quarterback, who is now 4-7 in games where the temperature is 32 or below at kickoff.

Rudy Gay traded from Raptors to Kings

The Rudy Gay era in Toronto appears to be over.

According to multiple reports, the Raptors on Sunday agreed to ship the veteran swingman to the Sacramento Kings in a multi-player blockbuster swap, along with Quincy Acy and Aaron Gray.

In exchange, the Raptors will reportedly get Chuck Hayes, Greivis Vasquez, John Salmons and Patrick Patterson.

Yahoo! Sports reporter Adrian Wojnarowski first broke the news on Twitter Sunday night.
All three players involved in the deal for the Raptors were not in uniform ahead of their tilt with the L.A. Lakers, and the Raptors are expected to make the trade announcent Monday.
Raptors coach Dwane Casey couldn't reference the deal specifically before the game, as nothing is official, but had nothing but good things to say about Gay.

"Rudy is a prince of a guy. He's an athletic, dynamic wing player, he gets to the basket at will and can shoot the ball and handle the ball," Casey said. "We were using him in a drag situation, a pick-and-roll situation because he could see over the defence, and he was growing into that role and he was doing a better job.

Maple Leafs crumble against Bruins

Deleting six front-line players does not declaw these Boston Bruins.

Particularly when the Maple Leafs get lost in their den, wander aimlessly on coverage and get eaten in short-handed situations.

The B’s continue to get the better of the Leafs in the calendar year 2013, winning last season’s regular series, pulling off the Game 7 playoff miracle and now taking the first two meetings on this schedule.

Despite a wild week of injuries and incriminating behaviour that forced some major roster juggling in the second of back-to-back games for both clubs, Boston bounced the Leafs 5-2 at the Air Canada Centre.

Minus regular defencemen Johnny Boychuk and Adam McQuaid, sniper Loui Eriksson and checking centre Chris Kelly, with Chad Johnson in net ahead of Tuukka Rask and baddest Bruin Shawn Thornton in the league cooler, there was little let-up.

The Leafs, so fortunate to have escaped the past two games with wins despite 50 shots against in each contest, still couldn’t deal with this different Boston deck. And if they expected an easy night, they deserved the mauling, which might have prompted the curt responses to questions when the dressing room opened for post-mortem.

4 reasons the Yankees will regret the Jacoby Ellsbury deal

Sports’ Bob Nightengale is reporting Jacoby Ellsbury has signed a seven-year contract with the New York Yankees that is in excess of $150 million, ending his seven-year stint with the Boston Red Sox.

Reactions to the deal were mixed. Some Red Sox and Yankees fans felt the signing was the second coming of the Johnny Damon deal, with the Yankees grabbing away another likable Red Sox center fielder and, in doing so, hurting their biggest rival.

This is silly. The Red Sox were never going to pay what Ellsbury (and his agent Scott Boras) wanted. Ellsbury is 30 years old and has been injury-prone is his career so far. The Yankees just gave him a seven-year deal. Let’s count all the ways this is problematic.

1. The Yankees will be paying Jacoby Ellsbury $20 million a year until he’s 37

So the Yankees just went through a nasty ordeal in which they needed a league suspension to (hopefully) get out of paying a declining superstar (Alex Rodriguez) a massive amount of money every year. So, let’s say they are granted this incredibly lucky reprieve — before it’s even finalized they turn around and offer a another massive contract to a guy entering his 30s? Um, what?

2. Ellsbury is known for his speed, something that typically declines in human beings when they are in their late 30s

Yankees fans lamented Alex Rodriguez’s decline, and the massive amount of money he was owed, when his bat speed slowed down a bit. Know what deteriorates faster than bat speed in guys as they age? Speed speed. Ellsbury is a phenomenal hitter, but he relies as much on his legs as anything, both on offense and defense. We’ll see how fast he is when he’s 35, and how happy Yankees are that he still has two years left on his deal.

3. The Yankees already have Brett Gardner

Wait, the Yankees already have a speedy, 30-year-old center fielder who’s stolen 50 bases in a season before? Yes, yes they do. Now, Ellsbury is a better player than Gardner. No one is arguing that. But is he that much of an improvement to justify spending $150 million over seven years? To the people who respond: “But Gardner is injury prone!” um, have you met Jacoby Ellsbury?

4. The Yankees have not learned from the mistakes of others

Two years ago, the Angels spent huge bucks to sign Albert Pujols. Last year, they spent huge money signing Josh Hamilton. Both were in their early thirties, and had produced big numbers up until that point. Both immediately fell off from their peak production, and now the Angels are saddled with two massive contracts, when all they want to do is build around their young phenom Mike Trout.

Tom: I was dating a girl months before meeting my boyfriend

Olympic diver Tom Daley was dating a woman only a few months before meeting his boyfriend – believed to be an Oscar-winning gay activist 20 years his senior.

The 19-year-old met Hollywood screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, 39, in March, after the Nickelodeon Annual Kids’ Choice Awards in Los Angeles.

While Daley has refused to name his boyfriend, friends said Black was the mystery man.
Daley, who won bronze at last year’s London Olympics, told The Jonathan Ross Show, which airs on Saturday, that it was ‘love at first sight’, but admitted it was a shock to find he had fallen for a man. He said: ‘People say “why did he have a girlfriend last year?”. Well, because I had a girlfriend last year.

And it wasn’t until spring this year, it came upon me. I didn’t expect it and it happened. Everything kind of clicked, everything went right.’

When Ross asked if he was surprised by his feelings, Daley replied: ‘It was the fact I was falling for a guy and it happened so quickly.’

Daley said he did not want to label himself as gay or bisexual, adding: ‘To be honest, everything is all pretty new and I don’t see any point in putting a label on it.’

Seahawkd stomp Saints, first to clinch postseason berth

A couple thousand Seahawks fans were crowded in front of the television stage when Russell Wilson walked out of the locker room still in full uniform.
Instantly, the chant started.

"MVP! MVP!"

Hard to argue against Wilson after a performance like Monday night.

Wilson threw for 310 yards and three touchdowns, and the Seahawks became the first team to clinch a spot in the NFC playoffs with a 34-7 victory against the New Orleans Saints.

More important than just wrapping up a spot in the postseason, the Seahawks (11-1) moved two games ahead on the rest of the NFC in the race for home-field advantage and hold the tiebreakers over New Orleans (9-3) and Carolina (9-3), the two closest pursuers.

The rest of the top teams better get ready to visit the Pacific Northwest in January. After this rout, the road through the NFC playoffs is almost certain to go through Seattle.

"For us to come out in that fashion and to win that game the way that we did was awesome," Wilson said.
