Susan
Bell-Irving's father , a former Royal Canadian Air Force pilot, would
rarely talk about the year he spent as a prisoner of war after his
plane was shot down over Germany during the Second World War.
He
was released and returned to Canada after the war ended, but for the
most part , Bell-Irving says her father left those difficult memories
behind in Europe.
Before
he died , however, Bell-Irving's father put his stories to paper ,
writing 'many pages' of notes about what he went through as a soldier
and then as a prisoner.
Even
now , she hasn't been able to bring herself to read them all.
“He
found it very difficult ,” Bell-Irving said Monday, before watching
a Remembance Day ceremony in downtown Vancouver.
“They're
very painful,”
Bell-Irving
was among thousands of people who attended Remembrance Day ceremonies
throughout British Columbia and across Canada , honouring fallen
solders and veterans.
