Texas teen fatal DWI defense: 'Affluenza'

"Affluenza," the affliction cited by a psychologist to argue that a North Texas teenager from a wealthy family should not be sent to prison for killing four pedestrians while driving drunk, is not a recognized diagnosis and should not be used to justify bad behavior, experts said Thursday.
A judge's decision to give 16-year-old Ethan Couch 10 years of probation for the fatal accident sparked outrage from relatives of those killed and has led to questions about the defense strategy. A psychologist testified in Couch's trial in a Fort Worth juvenile court that as a result of "affluenza," the boy should not receive the maximum 20-year prison sentence prosecutors were seeking.
The term "affluenza" was popularized in the late 1990s by Jessie O'Neill, the granddaughter of a past president of General Motors, when she wrote the book "The Golden Ghetto: The Psychology of Affluence." It has since been used to describe a condition in which children — generally from richer families — have a sense of entitlement, are irresponsible, make excuses for poor behavior, and sometimes dabble in drugs and alcohol, explained Dr. Gary Buffone, a Jacksonville, Fla., psychologist who does family wealth advising.
But Buffone said in a telephone interview Thursday that the term wasn't meant to be used as a defense in a criminal trial or to justify such behavior.

Kelly Clarkson's Cautionary Christmas Music Tale

Damn it, Blake Shelton – why did you have to be so awesomely offensive in your Christmas special last year? Thanks to your side-splitting Claymation spoof with Larry the Cable Guy, in which you shot Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and incinerated Sam the Snowman, NBC must've been scared off. In your place, Kelly Clarkson gave us a boring, misguided and uneven hour of television that served as little more than a commercial for her new holiday album, Wrapped in Red. Look, I get that the Peacock network is on a singing-contest-winner/female-country-music-star high right now – you may have heard about a little TV event last week called The Sound of Music Live! that pulled in a robust 18.6 million viewers.

Virgen de Guadalupe's Feast Day

Several local groups and churches today will celebrate the Virgen de Guadalupe's feast day -- the day in Mexican history when it is believed she appeared to Juan Diego.
In Mexico City, a Catholic church was eventually built on Tepeyac Hill, the site of her appearances.
Traditionally, in Catholic churches in Mexico, the faithful celebrate this special day by taking her roses and singing the traditional birthday song, "Las Mañanitas," during special Masses.

Here is a glimpse at some celebrations around El Paso today:

The Matachines of St. Pius X Catholic Church and Mariachi Los Toritos will perform at a praise of Our Lady of Guadalupe at 5 p.m. at the mural of the virgin at the intersection of Alameda and Zaragoza streets. Free parking will be available in the Tiguas Del Pueblo property behind the 7-Eleven store.
St. Pius X Catholic Church, 1050 N. Clark, will have a Mass at 7 a.m. and a drama at 7 p.m. in the church. Information: 772-3226.
Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 602 S. Oregon St., will have Mass at 6 p.m. followed by menudo and champurrado in the gym. There also will be mariachis to sing. Information: 532-5447.
St. Patrick Cathedral, 1118 N. Mesa, will have Las Mañanitas at 6 a.m., followed by Mass at 7 a.m. and breakfast, and a play in honor of the virgin at 5 p.m., and Mass with mariachis at 6 p.m., followed by a reception. Information: 533-4451.

Hurdler Jenneke Heats Up Instagram with her Bikini Body

It's almost 2014, but it's starting to feel like 2012 all over again.
Not that we're complaining.

If you recall, Australian hurdler Michelle Jenneke became quite the Internet sensation last year when a YouTube video of her performing what was undoubtedly the sexiest warm-up routine prior to a race went viral.

Well, the 20-year-old hottie started making headlines—and trending—again this week when she shared an Instagram photo of herself posing in a bikini next to a sign that reads "Access to Shelly Beach."

Naturally, upon seeing the sexy snap, we (like so many others, apparently) couldn't help but peruse the other pics that she has graciously posted to her account over the last few months.

Mega Millions tops $400 million with decreased jackpot odds

The MegaMillions jackpot rose to $400 million after no one matched the lucky numbers on the December 10 drawing.

In fact, no one has won the Mega Millions since the lottery game underwent a formatting change in October that significantly altered the odds of taking home the grand prize.
It has been getting way crazier now the day of the drawings,” Beer Depot store manager Adi Dalibi said.

Once it hits a certain amount it just goes up and up and up. Same with the PowerBall. People start making office pools and buying just a huge number of tickets.”

Demi Lovato talks about her messy life as a drug addict

Some addict-stars spend years abusing drugs before they hit bottom. For singer/songwriter Demi Lovato, it was when she was just 19, when she couldn't go 30 minutes without cocaine and even took to smuggling it on airplanes.
Now 21, Lovato opened up about her pathetic and messy life as a drug addict in an interview with Access Hollywood from the set of TheX Factor on Monday.
"I've really never talked about this stuff before … I don't know if I should be sharing this," she fretted.
Too late. Among other revelations, Lovato said her addiction made her a manipulator and a liar, able to hide her drug abuse even from trained minders.
"I couldn't go 30 minutes to an hour without cocaine and I would bring it on airplanes," she said. "I would smuggle it basically and just wait until everyone in first class would go to sleep and I would do it right there. I'd sneak to the bathroom and I'd do it. ... And that was even with somebody (with me), I had a sober companion, somebody who was watching me 24/7 and living with me (and) I was able to hide it from them as well."
