Hiroshi Yamauchi dies at 85

Hiroshi Yamauchi who transformed his great-grandfather’s playing-card company, Nintendo, into a global video game powerhouse, died on Thursday in Kyoto, Japan. He was 85.

The cause was complications of pneumonia, the company said.

Mr.Yamauchi, who led Nintendo from 1949 to 2002, was Japan’s most unlikely high-tech success story. Named president of the family business at 22, he steered Nintendo into board games, light-emitting toy guns and baseball pitching machines — fruitless forays that he later attributed to a “lack of imagination” — before the company arrived at arcade games.

Its Donkey Kong and the original Mario Bros. became hits and gave rise to Nintendo’s wildly successful home video game business.

The Nintendo Entertainment System, a console first released in Japan in 1983 as “Famicom,” unseated early leaders in the video game industry, selling more than 60 million units thanks to shrewd marketing, close attention to product quality and a crop of games based on unlikely yet endearing characters that soon became household names. see more...

Arr, today be talk like a Pirate Day

Talk Like a Pirate Day is one of the weirdest fake holidays around – and that's coming from the blog that told people how to celebratNational Root Beer Float Day, National Oyster Day and the uber-festive double header of National Taco Day and National Vodka Day.

But fear not. If you're dying to put on an eyepatch and pull out your favorite red bandana, we know the best ways to shiver your timbers. We'll just feel horribly ashamed of ourselves while doing so. Matey. See more …

Browns trade Trent Richardson

The Indianapolis Colts pulled off a stunning trade Wednesday afternoon, sending their 2014 first-round draft pick to the Cleveland Browns for running back Trent Richardson.
The move comes just 17 months after the Browns made Richardson the No. 3 overall pick in the NFL draft under a previous regime.
The Browns appear to be stockpiling draft picks in order to grab a franchise quarterback in next year's draft. The deal came on the same day that the team announced third-string quarterback Brian Hoyer will start Sunday, with no guarantee that injured starter Brandon Weeden — drafted by the previous regime — would ever get his job back.
When asked about the draft, Browns CEO Joe Banner dodged.
"I don't want to tip our hands, but it puts us in a very good position to have made some good progress in the off-season, we're in good (salary) cap shape," Banner said. "We're positioning ourselves to build a team that is good and sustainable." see more...

Brands bet millions that Apple itunes Radio

Like any new service, iTunes Radio will have zero users when it launches on Wednesday. More important, one of the key platforms for Apple's highly-anticipated streaming music service, the iOS 7 mobile platform necessary to run iTunes Radio on iPhones and iPads, is also being released for the first time today.

But that doesn't seem to concern advertisers.

Several big brands have shelled out upwards of $10 million to be iTunes Radio launch partners, a large bet that iTunes Radio will quickly become a force in the already crowded Internet radio industry.

"We've worked with all of them," said Frank Cooper, PepsiCo's CMO for global consumer engagement, "We looked at the the devices Apple has and the number of subscribers that they have overall on iTunes. Just in terms of infrastructure, we think they have the chance to be the biggest." see more...

Paula Patton responds to Miley Cyrus

The 37-year-old actress stopped by Bravo's "Watch What Happens Live" Tuesday to dish to host Andy Cohen her real reaction to their raunchy display.

"Honestly, they rehearsed for three days beforehand, and I don't know how not to dance with someone having their booty in your … all my friends do it like that," she explained. "And I don't really know what the big deal is."

Patton even made a joke regarding the viewers' shock. "I didn't know if they thought Miley was going to sit down and play piano like AliciaKeys. Her song's about taking molly!" she said, referring to the lyrics from Cyrus' mega hit "We Can't Stop."

Cyrus herself shared the same view as Patton, telling MTV days after the perfromance,"Me and Robin, the whole time said, 'You know we're about to make history right now.'"

"They're overthinking it," the singer said of her critics.

"You're thinking about it more than I thought about it when I did it. Like, I didn't even think about it 'cause that's just me."

National Cheeseburger Day, free cheeseburgers at dog haus

Drop your kale salads! It's National Cheeseburger Day, and Dog Haus is offering its new mini cheeseburger for free at all of its locations until 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Though there are several competing claims about who invented the first cheeseburger, one story attributes it to a fry cook in Pasadena. Circa 1926, Lionel Sternberger slapped a piece of cheese on a sizzling burger at his dad's Rite Spot sandwich shop, and the rest is history.
Dog Haus'cheeseburger is 2 ounces of Angus beef with grilled onion, melted white American cheese, grilled tomatoes and Haus sauce on a King'sHawaiian bun.
Locations include two Dog Hauses in Pasadena and one in Alhambra. see more...

iOS 7 is released

Today’s release of iOS 7 is a small gamble for Apple Switching from iOS 6 to iOS 7 is a necessary step, but it’s going to be painful in the short term. For all the usefulness of iOS 7, many users are going to feel a sense of loss when they have to take iOS 6 away.
The problem with the update, like almost any update on a smartphone, is the one-way nature of the process. Once you are in the land of iOS 7, there’s no going back. And given the radical nature of iOS 7, there’s going to be a lot of users wondering what they’ve just done to their Apple device.
They’ll likely start with denial. They didn’t update to iOS 7, it’s just some new icons, this isn’t a radical change to Apple’s operating system that makes every option easier to find, quicker to access, and all with a consistent interface. What they’re seeing is just iOS 6 with a pretty skin. There’ll be a switch to flip it back, they can find their old phone in here somewhere.See more...
