Tips from Breaking Bad's

That’s the kind of analogy that surfaces in every discussion about the show runner of Breaking Bad, which premieres its final eight-episode run tonight. And that happy talk sells Gilligan—and the show he created–short.

Sure, there’s more than a grain of truth to this stereotype. Compared to television’s other often-prickly auteurs—David Chase of the Sopranos, David Simon of The Wire, and Matt Weiner of Mad Men—Gilligan is easy going. His go-to adjective in describing someone he’s fond of is “sweet.”
Most days, it’s just easier to be nice to people,” Gilligan admits, “and it bears more fruit, even if I’m not feeling like it.”
Nice might get you a meeting, but it doesn’t create a show that must be included in any serious discussion about the best shows in television history. How exactly did Gilligan manage to  take Walter White from Mr. Chips to Scarface?  Here’s a look at the tactics and strategies that Gilligan used to morph an improbably dark idea into the greatness that is Breaking Bad.
(This is spoiler-free about the current season until the freshly appended closing paragraphs which recap episode 509.)

Ignore Your Critics:  “That is the single worst idea for a television series I’ve ever heard in my life.” That’s the assessment of Michael Lynton, CEO of Sony Entertainment, when two of his production executives explained the concept for Breaking Bad. Without the benefit of hindsight, that reaction isn’t at all surprising. Cancer. Meth. Mr. Chips. Scarface. Breaking Bad makes The Sopranos seem like Everybody LovesRaymond. And in addition, unbeknownst to Gilligan, another show with a more palatable spin on the theme—Weeds, featuring Mary Louise Parker as a pot-dealing suburban mom—was already in production while he was trying to get Breaking Bad off the ground.
But ultimately none of that mattered. Lacking a better idea, Gilligan soldiered on and landed a production deal with Sony—Lynton’s comment notwithstanding—and a home at AMC which was attempting to establish itself as a force in original programming and thus open to taking a chance on a radical show.
Cast Against Type:  How do you cast a character like Walter White? You find an actor who does dark– maybe Kevin Spacey or John Malkovich, or the best clone you can afford. What did Gilligan do? He gave the part of Walter White to a guy best known as as a beleaguered dad on a modestly successful sitcom.
But Gilligan remembered Bryan Cranston not only from Malcolm in the Middle but from an X-Files episode in which he pulled off the feat of making a racist seem empathetic. This gutsy decision made TV history. See more..

Jason Dufner Wins PGA Championship

Looking unruffled throughout an unhurried walk in Sunday's final round of the 95th PGA Championship, Jason Dufner, who earlier this year sparked a movement that became known as Dufnering, now is in possession of the Wanamaker Trophy.

Unperturbed by charges made by others and untroubled by the exigent East Course at Oak Hill Country Club, Dufner won the final major of the season with a lethal combination of pars and tap-in birdies.
Trailing by one at the start of the day, Dufner took the lead for good on No. 8 and shot 2-under-par 68 to finish at 10 under par to win by two over Jim Furyk.
After holing his final putt, Dufner celebrated the third win of his career with a muted double-fist pump to the sky, politely took his hat off to shake Furyk's hand, and then gently patted his wife, Amanda, on the rear end before hugging her. A few minutes later he hoisted the heavy silver Wanamaker Trophy to the sky and gave it a few kisses.

Rafael Nadal beats Milos Raonic

MilosRaonic called it a learning experience. It certainly wasn't the victory party the Uniprix Stadium crowd was hoping for as Rafael Nadal took only one hour eight minutes to down Canada's top tennis player 6-2, 6-2 in the $3.49 million US RogersCup final on Sunday in Montreal.

But it had taken 55 years for a Canadian just to get to the final of the country's biggest tournament, so Raonic had much to celebrate despite the defeat.
For one, by reaching the final he will be ranked 10th in the world when the next rankings appear Monday morning, making him the first Canadian to crack the top-10. He will be the youngest player in the top 10 as well.
"The tournament overall was a great thing," the 22-year-old from Thornhill, Ont., said. "There were a lot of situations that I'm very happy with the way I dealt with them, and there were a lot of learning experiences through it all.
"A lot of stepping stones that I need to do in my career happened this week, so that's great. The match, obviously I'm a little disappointed with myself. I would have hoped to deal with that situation a little bit better."
The last Canadian to reach the final of what was then called the CanadianOpen, the now 81-year-old Robert Bedard of Sherbrooke, Que., was among the more than 11,000 at centre court to see the power-serving Raonic meticulously taken apart by fourth-seeded Nadal's service returns and brilliant baseline play.
Nadal, one of the world's best who was playing for the first time since his first-round loss at Wimbledon in June, posted his eighth tournament win this year and the 58th of his career.

Katy Perry roar leaks two days ahead

KatyPerry's newest pop anthem has leaked two days ahead of its slated premiere. We've already heard a snippet of "Roar" and seen its fierce artwork, but now the song has hit the Internet in full. "Roar" serves as the lead single from Perry's third studio album, "Prism," which will receive an Oct. 22 release.

"I think it's a little bit more grown up and it's really interesting," "Roar" co-writer Bonnie McKee told MTV. "I'm really excited for the world to hear it because she's just ... she's taking a new approach. And I don't want to say too much about it, but it's definitely different. It's definitely a little more mature than the 'California Gurls' of yesterday."  see more..

Chris Brown says He'll Quit Music after 'X'

ChrisBrown took to Twitter on Tuesday to tell the world that he plans to quit music after the release of "X," his upcoming LP.

The R&B singer said he's "tired of being famous for a mistake" he made when he was 18, referencing when he assaulted Rihanna.
Both Brown, who has had a string of other post-assault altercations and incidents on his rap sheet, and the music industry, which has promoted and booked Brown since shortly after the assault, have faced near constant criticism since the horrific event that took place before the 2009 Grammys.
Brown's tweets have been littered with inspirational messages as of late. "I'm not a performer nor do I have to be," he said in one tweet. "We are all children pretending to be gods!"

"Aspire to be great and the person you wanna be," he wrote in another. "Don't conform because [your] worth is more than any money or status. We live. We die."

"X," Brown's sixth studio album, is out in stores on Aug. 20. It's worth noting that plenty of other performers have claimed they were retiring before, including Jay Z, who returned in 2006 following a three-year hiatus that he later admitted was "the worst retirement in history." see more..

No Idul Fitri Bonuses in Morocco

Indonesia and Morocco both have predominately moderate Musllm populations. In a couple of days, people in both countries will celebrate Islam’s most important festival, Idul Fitri.

But is there any major difference in the way the people in the two countries celebrate Idul Fitri?
Yes, the major difference is that not many people in Morocco will travel to their hometowns to celebrate Idul Fitri. Here in Indonesia, you see a massive exodus from towns and cities to villages,” Moroccan Ambassador to Indonesia told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.
Commemorating Idul Fitri, by praying and giving alms after fasting during Ramadhan, is similar in every Islamic country, but each country has its own traditions to mark the occassion.
It is an Indonesian tradition to travel to visit family in the homevillage at Idul Fitri.
There is no such tradition in Morocco.
"We have a similar tradition. But we will certainly go to our hometowns or villages not to celebrate Idul Fitri but for Idul Adha (Islamic Day of Sacrifice) festival. We also don’t have the tradition of hosting an open house. Normally we will visit the houses of relatives on the day of Idul Fitri,” Ambassador Majdi said.
Unlike in Indonesia, Majdi said, private companies and government offices in Morocco do not pay Idul Fitri bonuses to their employees.
For sure, they will pay festival bonuses for Idul Adha but not Idul Fitri. People have to buy new clothes for children and buy a cow or a goat for sacrifice. So they need a lot of money for Idul Adha ,” Majdi said.

Powerball giant jackpot $425 million

Americans in 43 states lined up Wednesday for a shot at a mind-blowing $425million Powerball jackpot, as lotto officials said they’re the ones feeling lucky in a year of gargantuan prizes and big profits.

A string of no-win weeks in the past year have allowed jackpots to grow to dizzying heights. The top four lottery prizes ever in the United States have come since March 2012, when the record was set with a $656 million Mega Millions jackpot. The next three top jackpots, all for Powerball, have come in the past nine months and follow that lottery’s January 2012 revamp, which changed the price of a ticket from $1 to $2.

Wednesday’s Powerball total is the fourth largest lotto jackpot ever. If someone does hit the right numbers, he or she can claim a single payment of $244 million after taxes.

And if no one walks away a winner, it is possible the next drawing on Saturday might be close to “world record territory,” said ChuckStrutt, head of the Multi-State Lottery Association.
