Colorado shooting victim described as sweet , smart, a horse lover

Friends of Claire Davis, the 17-year-old senior critically wounded in Friday's shooting at a Colorado high school, are wondering why bad things happen to good people, yet are thankful she made it through the night.
Davis is in a struggle for her life at a hospital in Littleton, near Arapahoe High School, where a classmate shot her in the head.

She remained in critical condition Sunday.

"She is stable, but is in a coma. The first responders got Claire to the right place, at the right time, and the doctors and hospital staff are doing a wonderful job taking care of her," her family said in a statement.
"We appreciate your continued good thoughts and prayers, and will provide updates as her condition improves."

Police say the gunman was looking for revenge against a librarian, but couldn't find the faculty member and killed himself as a school resource officer closed in.

Davis was just a random victim, police surmised, and the gunman and victim didn't even know each other.

Breaking down the 2014 Heisman Trophy race

Even if the 2013 ceremony has only just wrapped up, it's not too early to begin looking ahead to next year's Heisman Trophy competition.
Leading the way, of course, is this year's winner: Jameis Winston returns for another go at the trophy, much like his Heisman predecessor, Johnny Manziel, and should be viewed as the top contender heading into the 2014 season.
But he won't be alone. Even if this year's Heisman race loses a handful of strong challengers – like AJ McCarron, Andre Williams and Jordan Lynch, among many others – there are a slew of qualified candidates set to return next fall.

Marcos Maidana stuns Adrien Broner for welterweight belt

Marcos Maidana had a resounding answer to "The Problem" on Saturday night.
The Argentine slugger came out swinging from the opening bell, knocked Adrien "The Problem" Broner down twice and stunned the boxing world by handing Broner his first career loss. Maidana won a unanimous decision to take Broner's WBA welterweight title before a raucous crowd of 11,312 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
Broner (27-1, 22 KOs) was put on the defensive by Maidana from the start of the Showtime-televised bout. He was hurt badly in the second round and went down after a staggering left hand from Maidana (35-3, 31 KOs), nicknamed "El Chino." Broner barely survived the round. It was the first time in his career that the 24-year-old from Cincinnati had been down. It wouldn't be the last.
Broner, a three-division champion who was defending his welterweight belt for the first time, went down again in the eighth off another crushing left hand by Maidana, who then inexplicably head-butted Broner intentionally and had a point taken away by referee Laurence Cole. Broner acted like he was badly hurt, flopping onto the canvas. Cole wasn't buying it, however, and brought the fighters back together after a few minutes.

Midshipmen rout Cadets, 34-7, for 12th consecutive victory in series

The Navy football team got another virtuoso performance from quarterback Keenan Reynolds, and the defense turned in one of its finest outings of the season for a 34-7 victory over Army on a snowy and rainy Saturday afternoon in front of 65,612 at Lincoln Financial Field.
Reynolds was named MVP after carrying 30 times for 136 yards and three touchdowns, the second of which came with 6 minutes 22 seconds left in regulation and set the NCAA single-season record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback. The sophomore also caught the two-point conversion following the touchdown to put the Midshipmen comfortably ahead 28-7 as they extended their record series winning streak to 12.

Homeland , series three , episode 11 review

Nothing ever goes to plan on Homeland – all you can really count on is that, roughly twice per episode, Claire Danes will flare her nostrils and twitch her mouth while the rest of her face stays as blank and smooth as marble, so that she resembles a statue having a panic attack.
Thus, it was no surprise that this season's convoluted – and frankly bonkers – scheme to assassinate Iranian Revolutionary Guard leader Akbari (Houshang Touzie) would come unstuck. Actually by the end of Big Man in Tehran it was back on track once more. But by then it was difficult to work out who was doing what and why. All we knew was that Brody (Damian Lewis) had just gone a bit mad with an ashtray and a cushion and that this was in some way a good thing.
When last we saw him double (technically now triple) agent Brody was trying to shoot his way into Iran in what was surely the least covert covert operation in espionage history. Bundled off to a detention center, he pleaded for asylum, though he was practically winking towards interrogator Javadi (another plant, positioned by the CIA to take over as Revolutionary Guard boss).

With Brody incarcerated, an already complicated story-line was obliged to acquire an extra layer of ludicrousness. So pregnant, unstable Carrie (Danes) was dispatched on what felt like a 20 minute flight from the US to Tehran and Saul (Mandy Patinkin) gruff-talked a Mossad operative who had slept with his wife into coughing up two field operatives as support.

Cold weather causes water main break in Plateu

The extreme cold caused a water main break on Montreal's Plateau Mont Royal this morning, flooding St-Denis Street at St-Joseph Boulevard.
With temperature hovering at around -21 degrees, water gushed down St-Denis Street, spreading across several traffic lanes.

Police have closed St-Denis Street between Laurier and Mont Royal avenues, and St-Joseph Boulevard between Henri-Julien Avenue and Berri Street.

Montreal public works employees are on the scene trying to fix the break.

Caino snow: Is this picture of Egypt's Sphinx a fake?

A picture of Egypt's Sphinx covered in snow went viral yesterday, as reports spread of the first snowfall in the North African country for 112 years.
But according to Buzzfeed, the widely shared photos are actually of a miniature replica of the Egyptian monument at the Tobu World Square theme park in Japan.

The pictures were originally posted to social website Reddit early this morning, and quickly went viral on Twitter and Facebook.

But soon afterward, users noticed the area surrounding the ancient statue didn't match pictures of the real Sphinx - and that the tip of the Eiffel Tower appeared to be visible in the background.

The 1/25 scale model is part of a series of detailed miniature replicas of global landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower, Tower Bridge and the Empire State Building.

More pictures from Egypt which appeared online yesterday, showed Cairo and Alexandria waking up to its first snowfall in more than a century.
