Pacquiao vs Rios: Pacman impressive in victory

There werev a lot questions surrounding Manny Pacquiao heading into Saturday's fight against Brandon Rios.

He answered a lot of those questions definitively, dominating Rios on the way to a unanimous victory. Pacquiao flashed the speed and power that once put him in the discussion for best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

He punished Rios, battering him with heavy combinations. He didn't leave much doubt early either, coming out of the corner strong in the first round. Many, including one of the judges, scored every round in Pacquiao's favor.

The other two judges scored decisive victories in favor of Pacquiao with one scoring it 119-109 and the other 118-110.

Pacquiao was impressive.

Most people likely tuned in to see . The Hunger Games star Josh Hutcherson host SNL … but there's no doubt that they all went away impressed by HAIM.

Starting off with their song “The Wire”, the rock band's execution was just flawless. Danielle started off as the lead singer, letting her cool, Stevie Nicks voice soar along and hit each note just right. As the song went on, each sister took the reins singing, combining their separate styles well.

Roughriders undeterred by cold

Friday seemed like a fitting conclusion to a season of extremes for the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The Riders conducted a two-hour practice at Mosaic Stadium in temperatures that dipped to minus-25 C. It was the final full on-field session for the Riders before they play the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in Sunday’s Grey Cup game at Mosaic Stadium (5:30 p.m., TSN, CKRM). The forecast for Sunday calls for a high of minus-1 C and with temperatures falling to minus-9 in the evening.

Friday’s bitter cold was in stark contrast to when the Riders gathered in Bradenton, Fla., for a four-day mini-camp in early April. A portion of the opening day of rookie camp was cancelled due to heavy rains. The Riders finished the remainder of the mini-camp under sunny skies and a temperature of 28 C.

Florida was the complete opposite (to Friday),’’ said Riders defensive tackle Keith Shologan. “We were as low as we could get in the southern United States and it’s completely different up here. It’s full circle. That training camp started it off right and now we just need to finish it.’’

The mini-camp played an important role in helping the Riders reach Sunday’s game because it helped the team get a headstart on the 2013 season. The Riders’ roster had been rebuilt during the off-season and the mini-camp provided an opportunity for the new players to bond with the returning ones.

College Board Challenges the Pell

The College Board has a brave new idea. It wants the government to establish college savings account for low-income children starting at the age of 11. The money for the college plan would come from advances on the Pell Grant, typically announced at the end of high school.

It is well-proven that when a family focuses on college early and believes that it is within financial reach, their student has a significantly greater chance of going to college. This proposal should build aspirations for college, creating motivation to get there.

Many low-income families have the resources to save for college but don't. Immigrant families, which make up 30 percent of low-income students in all public schools, send billions back to support relatives in their home countries without saving for their children's educations. For many African-Americans, church donations come before college savings.

Microsoft In Talks to Buy Shoutcast and Winamp From AOL

Looks like the llama may not get off so easily after all. AOL yesterday announced that it was shutting down Winamp, media playing software for Windows and Android devices that it picked up through its 1999, $80 million acquisition of Nullsoft in 1999. But today Techcrunch has learned that AOL is talks with Microsoft to sell Winamp, along with Shoutcast, a media streaming service also developed by Nullsoft. We have also learned that AOL has been planning to announce the closure of Shoutcast next week.

AOL has declined to comment for this story, and we are still waiting to hear back from Microsoft with a response. From what we understand, the deal is not yet finalized, with AOL and Microsoft still working out the price. It could also be very wishful thinking from those intent on trying to save both services.

AOL did not give any guidance yesterday on what would happen with Shoutcast.
