Wayward Dreamlifter captivates the Air Capital

In a town used to having very large planes in its skies and at its airports, the Air Capital city became captivated for hours Thursday by a plane on the ground.
But not just any plane.
A wayward Dreamlifter – a massive Boeing cargo plane – missed its intended destination of McConnell Air Force Base on Wednesday night and landed nine miles to the north at city-owned Jabara Airport.
As word spread early Thursday about the incident, crowds braved the cold and windy weather to gawk at the plane near 37th and North Webb Road. Some sat in cars that crawled along Webb or in parking lots across the street. Others lined a fence about 100 yards from the runway.
Plenty of people took pictures.
When the Dreamlifter – piloted by a different crew than the one that goofed – finally took off at 1:15 p.m. without a hitch, the crowds cheered and honked horns.
About 20 minutes later, the gigantic white plane with a funky hump on top safely landed at McConnell – more than 16 hours late.
The whole event was a non-event,” said Victor White, director of Wichita’s city airports.
Not to Lisa Stewart, who stopped by after taking her husband to work.

Famed wrestler 'Mad Dog' Vachon dies

I remember feeling awkward phoning Maurice (Mad Dog) Vachon that morning.

I was a big wrestling fan as a kid and the Mad Dog was a legend.

Winnipeg radio personality and former World Wrestling Federation announcer Joe Aiello was hosting a tribute show for Vachon in January 2002. He gave me Vachon's number in Iowa, so I could interview him in advance of the show.

I knew it was Mad Dog when he answered, recognizing the voice from all those colourful interviews in the 1970s and '80s, but I still asked to speak to Mr. Vachon.
"Ya, you got da Mad Dog," he said with his familiar growl, then he chuckled, instantly putting me at ease.

Vachon, who lived in St. Boniface during his American Wrestling Association days in the early 1980s, died of natural causes early Thursday at his home in Omaha, Neb.
He was 84.

Vachon was such a national icon, his passing drew a comment from the Prime Minister.

“Hunger Games : Catching Fire” Lawrence smolders

It's almost as if the role of Katniss Everdeen, the sad-eyed but steely heroine of the best-selling series The Hunger Games, was written expressly for Jennifer Lawrence.

With The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (**1/2 out of four; rated PG-13, opening Thursday in select theaters and Friday nationwide), Lawrence has evolved believably in the role of the increasingly rebellious Katniss. The Oscar-winning actress can nimbly pull off the dazzling fashion-show moments in this futuristic drama, as well as the considerable action exploits and emotional shadings required of her tortured character. Whether on the runway or shooting an arrow, Lawrence is powerfully convincing.
Based on the books by Suzanne Collins, this second in the series follows Katniss after she has returned home from winning the fight-to-the-death competition, along with her partner Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson). (It's a grim game of sheer survival, pitting pairs from each of 12 oppressed districts.) Katniss and Peeta have been handsomely rewarded, their bleak, poverty-stricken lives replaced with physical comforts, courtesy of the totalitarian regime they live under. But there is discontent brewing.

'Person of Interest' Bosses Talk Major Death

'We knew from the beginning that we had to punish ourselves and the audience by losing more and more castmember,' Jonah Nolan tells THR following Tuesday's game-changer.
Person of Interest just bid farewell to a core member of the team.
Tuesday's episode, "The Crossing," was billed as the second part in a three-episode trilogy with the warning that one of the main players on the CBS drama would not be making it out alive. And boy, did they keep that promise, with Taraji P. Henson's Detective Carter suffering a fatal gunshot in the midst of Reese's battle against the powerful and corrupt organization, HR.

Macy's begins pilot test of Apple's iBeacon in flagship New York

One of America's has begun a pilot program with the state-of-the-art Bluetooth-based microlocation system.

The 155-year-old department store chain has partnered with Redwood City, Calif.-based Shopkick to install iBeacons transmitters — called shopBeacons — throughout the chain's flagship Midtown Manhattan and San Francisco locations, reports GigaOm. Shopkick's technology will allow Macy's to track shoppers' movements throughout the stores, serving up different offers based on the floor or department the customer is in.

In addition to one-off location-based alerts, Shopkick and Macy's are using the shopBeacons technology to tie customers' at-home shopping with their in-store visits. "If [a customer] "likes" a specific product in the app, shopBeacon can remind her when she enters the store that sells it," according to Shopkick.

Xbox One: A $499 PC for your living room

The Xbox One is Microsoft's first new gaming console in eight years. It's quality piece of hardware but it's also noteworthy because Microsoft is using it to make a statement.
Video game consoles are no longer just gaming consoles. They're computers for you living room.
So how does the Xbox One which goes on sale for $499 on Friday , fare with that in mind.
The Xbox hardware is big ... even by next-generation console standards. It's bigger than a cable box and Blu-ray player, but thankfully smaller than an AV Receiver.
That said, the Xbox One is tastefully designed, which makes its size less of an issue. The combination of finishes, textures and angles make the all-black box fun, but not loud. You won't have to hide this away from public sight.

On the inside, the Xbox is now powered by the same developer-friendly 8-core processor as Sony's PlayStation 4. It also has 8 gigabytes of RAM, but its approach to using these components is very different from its competitor.
