Power failure Disrupts Metro North's New Haven Line

Hours after a predawn power loss shut down much of Metro-North Rail road’sNew Haven Line early on Wednesday, officials warned that service could be imperiled for several days, and possibly longer, upending commutes for tens of thousands of travelers.

The disruption began after a Consolidated Edison feeder cable in Mount Vernon, N.Y., failed around 5:20 a.m., snarling service between Stamford, Conn., and Grand Central Terminal.

The utility said the type of repairs needed “typically take two to three weeks.” Officials hoped to line up alternative power sources that could hasten a return to normal service, but state and transit officials conveyed little optimism that the fixes would come quickly.

“People need to now assume this is a long-term problem,” Gov. Dannel P.Malloy of Connecticut said in a news conference.

After speaking with officials at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the governor said, “It was clear that they don’t have an immediate solution to this problem.”

The authority said commuters who use the New Haven line would encounter a patchwork of trains and buses on Thursday morning, a setup that would continue “until further notice.” The agency said the plan could accommodate about a third of the regular ridership.

Chargers 'devastated' by ex-DB Paul Oliver's suicide

Former San Diego Chargers defensive back Paul Oliver died from a self-inflicted gunshot in Marietta, Ga., on Tuesday night, authorities said, leaving his former teammates and coaches stunned and wondering what had happened to the 29-year-old who last played in the NFL two years ago.

Oliver played for the Chargers from 2007-11, where he was a teammate of Quentin Jammer, now with the Denver Broncos.

"He was a good friend of mine. Great guy. Great guy," Jammer told USA TODAY Sports. "I mean, the early reports were that he committed suicide, and he just didn't seem like that type of guy. You never know what somebody is going through, what's going on in somebody's life."

"I hadn't talked to him in a while. I wish now I could reach out to him. If I'd have known," Jammer said, his voice trailing off.

Oliver killed himself with a hand gun at about 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday, said Mike Bowman, public information officer for the Cobb County Police Department, though Bowman said Wednesday he did not know the location of the wound. see more...

Valve to launch a prototype steam box and multiple steam machines in 2014

Following the announcement of SteamOS, Valve just unveiled the long-anticipated Steam Box — sort of. Instead of releasing a Valve-branded Steam Box, the company will actually work with multiple manufacturers to release a series of Steam machines for your living room.

Yet, Valve also presented a specific prototype, a Steam machine designed by Valve. This particular machine is closer to what everyone expected. For now, only 300 copies will be produced and sent to lucky beta testers. The company doesn’t say whether those prototypes will eventually become the Steam Box, but it wouldn’t surprise anyone.

As for the Steam machines, Valve promises “an array of specifications, price, and performance.” It could be pretty similar to the Chrome book lineup. Customers will be presented with multipleperformance tiers — it should make it easier to buy a traditional gaming computer. Major Escape of Salmon on South Coast

A spokesperson for Cooke says some 20,000 salmon escaped into HermitageBay last Wednesday after high currents suddenly submerged one of the pens. 

A net was just being placed on top of one of the pens by workers when the current caused the anchor to slip, pushing some of the cages together and resulting in the escape of thousands of market-ready salmon. 

Cooke says DFO and the provincial department of fisheries were notified immediately and they're now working on a recapture plan.

The company says it is working with DFO to get permission to catch the escaped fish, which are healthy and do not pose an environmental threat. The most likely scenario is that the fish will probably fall prey to predators, if not caught by licensed fishermen. Cooke says despite the loss to the company, the escape meant just two days of lost time at the local processing facility. see more...

Ted Cruz deal

TedCruz says he wasn't elected to the Senate to stay quiet. And his refusal upon entering Congress to observe its protocol to sit back and learn like a freshman, as expected, rubbed some of his more senior colleagues the wrong way.

And while he has angered much of his party over his crusade against President Barack Obama's health care law and the potential government shutdown it could cause, Cruz says he's standing for the same principles that got him elected.

On Tuesday, he took that edict to the Senate floor in support of his plan to defund Obama care, saying he would speak "until I am nolonger able to stand."

FIFA 14 review

Apparently following an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" methodology, the FIFA team hasn't introduced any large, game-changing features this year. 

Heading into the next console generation, this is very much a "tune-up" year in regards to FIFA14, and for good reason: It's pretty hard to top EA Canada's efforts with the FIFA series in recent years. 

Each iteration of the soccer sim has gradually tapered off its impactful improvements, with the introduction of physics in FIFA 12 and then First Touch Control in FIFA 13.

Continuing the trend, the biggest on-field changes in FIFA14 revolve around one of the first things players will notice: The game feels a bit slower. The fact is, the game's actual speed may not be any slower than before, but the continual tweaking of passing and dribbling mechanics has lead to FIFA 14 becoming a much more methodical game than before. 

Your team's progressions seem to take a little longer since the defense plays your attackers tighter, resulting in passing lanes that are a tad harder to find. The dribbling mechanics added in FIFA 13 have been altered – no longer requiring players to hold the left trigger – and effectively performing some of the fun combinations from last year is more difficult and confusing now. see more...
