Navy Yard shooting suspect?

On the surface, Aaron Alexis' time in the Navy appears to have been routine. But as word spread Monday that Alexis is suspected of gunning down a dozen people at the Washington Navy Yard here, Navy officials who asked not to be identified said the 34-year-old veteran had a pattern of misconduct.

That pattern appears to have contributed to two prior shooting incidents in Seattle and Fort Worth -- seemingly minor incidents that damaged acar and an apartment but resulted in no injuries.
What may have caused Alexis to go on a deadly shooting spree Monday morning remained a mystery to FBI and Navy officials, as well as acquaintances of the quiet man who split his time in recent years between Texas, New York and Washington State. See more...

Costa Concordia salvage

Salvagecrews lifted the wrecked Costa Concordia cruise liner off a rock shelf on Monday as they worked deep into the night to complete one of the most difficult and expensive maritime salvage operations ever undertaken.

The 114,500-ton Concordia has lain half-submerged on its side just off the Italian island of Giglio since it ran aground and sank with the loss of 32 lives on January 13, 2012.

After a day of slow and painstaking work, the ship had been lifted by more than 25 degrees from its original resting place and progress towards bringing it fully upright was expected to take no more than a few hours.
"We have started the final phase of the rotation," Franco Gabrielli, the head of Italy's Civil Protection Authority told reporters. "We are approaching the final phase of the operation," he said, adding that the operation could be complete by 4.00 a.m (1000 ET).
Work began at 9 a.m. (0700 GMT) after a three-hour delay due to an overnight storm and progress was slower than originally estimated but engineers said the project had matched their expectations fully. see more...

Not far to travel for a fundraiser

Membersof Congress will typically bend over backward to feed the never-satisfied maw of their campaign war chests. They’ll shake sweaty hands, pose for awkward pictures and make countless pleadingcalls. But what they won’t do, apparently, is travel more than three blocks.

According to a new analysis by the Sunlight Foundation of five years of fundraising data, about three-quarters of fundraisers happen within a checkbook’s throw (make that three blocks) of the Capitol. To be fair, Washington weather is often brutal, with its crushing humidity half the year, slushy rain in the winter, etc. So we can hardly blame our well-coiffed and loafer-shod lawmakers for not wanting to pound the pavement too often. Bill Nye in “Dancing with the star”

BillNye is ready to bust a move on "Dancing with the Stars."

The "Science Guy" is part of the new cast of competitors on ABC dancing competition, facing off against the likes of Valerie Harper, Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi, Keyshawn Johnson and Leah Remini.

So, is he nervous about putting on his dancing shoes on live TV?
"There'snervous, and then there's this other level, which, I think we would go with terrified," he told CBSNews.com.

The 57-year-old TV personality also said his rehearsals with professional partner Tyne Stecklein have been "exhausting."

"I watch myself on video, I'm so bad. It's extraordinary," he added. "The guy has such horrible posture, he's so pigeon-toed -- how can he even move around on the Earth? He's so uncoordinated."
But he's got a good partner in Stecklein, who is new to the competition this season.
"She is an expert at this business," Nye said. "It is just weird to me, as an educator, how good she is -- what needs to be fixed, remembering it, encouraging you, being firm but fair and all that, and she's just a world-class athlete."
Despite those nerves (I'm extraordinarily nervous," he admitted, "But in the theatre [said in a British accent], they would say if you stop being nervous, stop doing it"), Nye is ready to cha-cha -- the style he'll be dancing during Monday night's premiere -- waltz, tango, and foxtrot his way to the mirrorball trophy.
"I'm in it to win it, people!" he declared. See more...

Miss America pageant winner Nina Davuluri

The first Miss America pageant winner of Indian heritage was cheered by family members halfway around the world.
NinaDavuluri’s grandmother told The Associated Press that she cried when she saw the news on television.

I am very, very, happy for the girl. It was her dream and it was fulfilled,” 89-year-old Vege Koteshwaramma said by phone from her home in the city of Vijaywada, in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

The 24-year-old Davuluri , a U.S. native, will begin the first day of her reign Monday the same way most of her predecessors did — with a frolic in the Atlantic City surf. She will also speak at a news conference about Sunday’s win.

Davuluri wants to be a doctor and is applying to medical school, with the help of a $50,000 scholarship she won as part of the pageant title. See more...

Peyton Manning vs. Eli Manning again

Much as he tried to hide from a distant family suite, Peyton Manning couldn't conceal his anguish.
He squirmed. He fist-pumped. He grimaced. He clapped.
Peyton Manning wasn't playing in Super Bowl XLII at University of Phoenix Stadium in 2008. His brother Eli was.
What was obvious to the large TV audience, though, was how badly the ever-expressive Peyton Manning wanted his brother Eli to lead the New York Giants to victory against the New England Patriots.
"I pull for him," Peyton Manning said Friday from his locker.
"We pull for each other. Always have. He's five years younger than me so my parents would drag him to all my games."
When Peyton was a freshman and sophomore playing at Tennessee, Eli would
spend many of his middle school weekends traveling from New Orleans to Knoxville. In high school, Eli would usually play Friday nights and get to Peyton's college games on Saturdays.

"At Tennessee, you'd have one off week a year, I'd go back to New Orleans to watch him play a high school game," Peyton said. "In the NFL, you have one off week a year, where was I going? Ole Miss games. I didn't get as many of his games as he did mine, but I went to every one I could. see more ...

Miss New York crowed Miss America

Nina Davuluri became the first contestant of Indian heritage and the second consecutive contestant from New York to win the Miss America pageant Sunday night.
Davuluri, 24, won the title as the nationally televised pageant returned home to Atlantic City.
She succeeds another Miss New York, Mallory Hagan, whose tenure was cut short when the pageant moved back to Atlantic City after a six-year stint in Las Vegas, where winners were chosen in January.
Davuluri performed a classical Bollywood fusion dance for her talent competition.
After the traditional frolic in the Atlantic City surf Monday morning, she will head to the scene of a devastating boardwalk fire in the New Jersey communities of Seaside park and Seaside Heights on Monday afternoon.
The pageant had pitted 53 contestants — one from each state, plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands — in swimsuit, evening gown, talent and interview competitions.
"This is where we belong," Sam Haskell, CEO of the Miss America Organization, told The Associated Press. "This is the home of Miss America, and this is where we're going to stay."
Much attention had been given to Miss Kansas, Theresa Vail, who is believed to be the first Miss America contestant to openly display tattoos. She has the Serenity Prayer on her rib cage and a military insignia on the back of a shoulder. While other contestants wore glamorous costumes and elaborately decorated footwear during Saturday night's "show-us-your-shoes" parade on the Boardwalk, Vail wore camouflage gear and Army boots.
In a Twitter message Sunday, Vail wrote: "Win or not tonight, I have accomplished what I set out to do. I have empowered women. I have opened eyes."
Vail made it to the Top 10 and won a nationwide voters' choice award propelling her into the semi-finals. see more...
