Hands review Samsung Galaxy Note 3

The SamsungGalaxy Note 3, the latest model in the Galaxy Note line of phones, is more of an evolutionary upgrade than a revolutionary one. The physical changes aren't noticeable at first, but some make a real difference. At the same time, there are a few new features that will probably appeal to power users – the Note's key audience.

Held in hand, the Note 3 feels very much like the NoteII. That's because Samsung laboured to keep the width of the phone the same even while bumping up the screen size to 5.7 inches. Samsung clearly doesn't want to get into the territory marked by the 6.3-inch Samsung Galaxy Mega – nor should it. Microsoft to buy Nokia mobile phone unit

Microsoft has agreed a deal to buy Nokia's mobile phone business for 5.4bn euros ($7.2bn; £4.6bn).

Nokia will also license its patents and mapping services to Microsoft. Nokia shares jumped 35% on the news, whereas Microsoft's fell more than 5%.

The purchase is set to be completed in early 2014, when about 32,000 Nokia employees will transfer to Microsoft.

Nokia has fallen behind rivals Samsung and Apple, while critics say Microsoft has been slow into the mobile market.

Describing the deal as a "big, bold step forward", Microsoft chiefexecutive Steve Ballmer told the BBC that his company was in the process of transforming itself from one that "was known for software and PCs, to a company that focuses on devices and services". see more..

Katie Couric is engaged

Katie Couric, 56, has finally found love again.

The talk show host and mother of two, who lost husband Jay Monahan to colon cancer in 1998, got engaged to financier John Molner, 50, over the Labor Day weekend.

"Katie's calling it her labor of love," said Peopleeditor Larry Hackett on Good Morning America announcing the news.

Molner, head of mergers and acquisitions at Brown Brothers Harriman, popped the question with a diamond ring at sunset on the beach in East Hampton, N.Y., reports People.com.

Katie told me in May she and Molnar were "having a great time. He's really funny and very successful in his own right. In a different line of work. A little more age appropriate." see more...

Rosh Hashanah 2013

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish NewYear, is celebrated in 2013 from sundown on Sept. 4 to nightfall on Sept. 6. The Hebrew date for Rosh Hashanah is 1 Tishrei 5773.

Though Rosh Hashanah literally means "head of the year," the holiday actually takes place on the first two days of the Hebrew month of Tishrei, which is the seventh month on the Hebrew calendar. This is because Rosh Hashanah, one of four new years in the Jewish year, is considered the new year of people, animals and legal contracts. In the Jewish oral tradition, Rosh Hashanah marks the completion of the creation of the world.

Rosh Hashanah is the beginning of the Jewish High Holy Days, or YamimNoraim (the "Days of Awe"), and is followed 10 days later by Yom Kippur, the "day of atonement." The Mishnah refers to Rosh Hashanah as the "day of judgment," and it is believed that God opens the Book of Life on this day and begins to decide who shall live and who shall die. The days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are viewed as an opportunity for Jews to repent (teshuvah, in Hebrew) and ensure a good fate. see more...

TIFF Top 10

In 1960, the voluptuous Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida announced she was looking for a house in Toronto. The city — still pretty much a provincial backwater in those days — went mad with celebrity fever: Reporters followed her and stories were filed daily on her plans. Toronto Star columnist Pierre Berton wrote a parody that postulated a “Gina Lollobrigida desk” at the newspaper.

Today, as the Toronto International Film Festival envelops the city, LaL ollo wouldn’t stand a chance. She’d be tucked into the alphabetical list of celebrities (between Caroline Link and Daniele Luchetti, in fact) that TIFF releases every year to give a sense of order to the galaxy of stars, filmmakers and random celebrities who are coming to a city that now regards itself as world-class.

The guest list seems to affirm that.
