Diana Nyad completes historic Cuba-to-Florida swim

That's the mantra Diana Nyad said she had this year.

And that's exactly what she did.

On Monday, Nyad became the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without a protective cage, willing her way to a Key West beach just before 2 p.m. ET, nearly 53 hours after jumping into the ocean in Havana for her fifth try in 35 years.

Shortly after conquering the Straits of Florida, the 64-year-old endurance swimmer sat down with CNN  Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. SanjayGupta.

"It's all authentic. It's a great story. You have a dream 35 years ago -- doesn't come to fruition, but you move on with life. But it's somewhere back there. Then you turn 60, and your mom just dies, and you're looking for something. And the dream comes waking out of your imagination," Nyad said. see more...

The swim wasn't easy.

Tommy Morrison dies at 44

TommyMorrison's career reached its pinnacle on a hot June night in LasVegas, when he stepped into the ring and beat George Foreman to become heavyweight champion. It reached its nadir when he tested positive for HIV three years later.

The last 20 years of the brash boxer's life would be defined by extensive legal troubles, erratic behavior and mounting health problems. Morrison would later claim that he never tested positive for the virus that causes AIDs, even as he was hospitalized during the last days of his life.
Morrison died Sunday night at a Nebraska hospital. He was 44.
His longtime promoter and close friend, Tony Holden, confirmed that "the Duke" had died, but his family would not disclose the cause of death. Morrison and his wife, Trisha, continued to deny that the former champion ever had HIV during the final years of his life. See more..

Mesut Ozil signs for Arsenal

Arsène Wenger has given Arsenal's supporters the statement signing they have craved with the €50m (£42.5m) purchase of the attacking midfielder Mesut Ozil from RealMadrid, a move that has nearly trebled the club's previous highest outlay on a player.
The manager had expressed the confidence that Arsenal's increased financial firepower would permit him to complete a deal for one of the biggest names on the market. At 10.30pm on Monday he could celebrate a coup.
Ozil becomes the third most expensive signing in British football history, behind Fernando Torres, who joined Chelsea from Liverpool for £50m in 2011, and Carlos Tevez, who cost Manchester City £45m. The 24-year-old has agreed a five-year contract, which is worth a basic £150,000 a week, with bonuses on top, having completed a medical earlier in the day in Germany, where he was preparing with his national team for the World Cup qualifier against Austria on Friday. see more..

Fire desttroy beloved St. Jacobs farmers market

An overnight fire has destroyed the beloved St. Jacobs farmer’s marketbuilding, just north of Waterloo, Ont., but plans are already being made to get the small town’s market up and running by its next scheduled opening on Thursday.
Firefighters were called just before 2 a.m. Monday to put out flames engulfing the post-and-beam barn building, which housed about 60 vendors. There were no injuries, but the building has been reduced to a blackened frame. The fire destroyed cooling equipment and cooking hoods, and damages are estimated to add up to nearly $2-million. Electric Zoo music festival canceled

The third and final day of New York City's Electric Zoo music festival was canceled Sunday after two concert-goers died and at least four others were hospitalized due to drug-related causes, police said.

The cause of death for the two Electric Zoo attendees -- a 23-year-old male and a 20-year-old female -- is believed to involve the drug MDMA, either in Ecstasy pills or in its "pure" powder or crystal form, known as molly. Four others remain hospitalized and critically ill, with the causes still under investigation, according to Sgt. Lee Jones, a New York PoliceDepartment spokesman.

The city recommended the electronic music festival be canceled after the recent events, and Electric Zoo's promoters, Made Event, agreed, Jones said.

Ellen Borakove, spokeswoman for the city medical examiner's office, told CNN an autopsy is scheduled for one of the victims and that she expected to have more information Sunday afternoon.

In a statement posted Sunday on the event's homepage, Made Event said "the founders of Electric Zoo send our deepest condolences to the families of the two people who passed away this weekend. Because there is nothing more important to us than our patrons, we have decided in consultation with the New York City Parks Department that there will be no shwo today”.see more...

Syria attack used Sarin gas

The Obama administration asserted Sunday for the first time that the Syrian government used the nerve gas sarin to kill more than 1,400 people in the world’s gravest chemical weapons attack in 25 years as the White House intensified pressure on a skeptical Congress to authorize punitive military strikes against Damascus.

Secretary of State John F. Kerry said new laboratory tests showed traces of sarin, an extremely toxic nerve agent, in blood and hair samples collected from emergency workers who responded Aug. 21 to the scene of an alleged chemical weapons attack in the Damascus suburbs.
In an interview blitz on five Sunday television news shows, Kerry said the fresh forensic evidence strengthened an already compelling case for taking military action against the government of Syrian PresidentBashar al-Assad, and he predicted that Congress would vote to give President Obama that authority. David Frost dies of a heart attack

British journalist David Frost, who was best known for his interview with former President Richard Nixon, died on Saturday, his family said. The veteran broadcaster was 74.

It was his 1977 interviews of the former president that cemented Frost's reputation around the globe. The young British broadcaster's persistent questioning drew an apology from President Nixon for Watergate.

"I let the American people down and I have to carry that burden with me for the rest of my life,” he said, watched by an audience of 45 million people.

Thirty-five years later the encounter is still a master class of interviewing technique and a gripping piece of drama. See more...
