President' Days 2013

Presidents Day is a time set aside to celebrate the legacies of GeorgeWashington and Abraham Lincoln and also remember all the presidents of the United States (POTUS) that have made nation great. The intent of the Uniform Monday holiday Bill of 1968 was create three-day weekends for federal employees by celebrating for national Holidays: Washington's Birthday , Memorial Day, Veteran's Day and Columbus Day.

In 1971, President Richard Nixon provided some clarity by proclaiming that Presidents' Day would be observed as a single federal holiday -- the third Monday of every February -- to honor all past presidents.
Having been to the Lincoln Memorial and Mount Vernon, it is understandable why we give these presidents the lion's share of our affection. After all, one is the father of our country and the other preserved the union. But each president -- in ways large and small -- has contributed to this republic and made America what many of us believe her to be: exceptional. So let our gratitude be universal and also extend itself to not just the current commander-in-chief but also those patriots who have defended our freedom well into America's third century as a nation.
With California home to two presidential libraries, Ronald Reagan's in Simi Valley and Richard Nixon's in Yorba Linda, perhaps a great way to celebrate with the family is learning more about these former heads of state. Hopefully you were able to take in "Creating the United States" at the Skirball Cultural Center which showcased the contributions of Washington, Adams, Jefferson and other Founders, and also the spirit of the times: collaboration, cooperation, compromise and creativity. When coupled with the recent "Just Cause: Voices of the American Civil War" exhibit at the Huntington Library, we begin to appreciate just how much the Declaration of Independence, Constitution and Bill of Rights are expressions of our highest ideals of liberty as Americans.
Our first POTUS still speaks to us from across the ages in that "Perseverance and Spirit could work wonders" on the battlefield and in the diplomatic theater -- be it literal or metaphorical. And may we always be mindful -- especially on this Presidents' Day some 150 years since Lincoln uttered those famous words in Gettysburg: "That this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom; and that this government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."

Nashville memorial service planned for Mindy McCready

Last Monday, Mindy's McCready's publicist says a Nashville tribute to the late singer is in the works. McCready , known for 90's country singles Ten Thousand Angels and Guys Do It All the Time , apparently shot herself Sunday afternoon on the porch of her Arkansas home. Her boyfriend, record producer David Wilson, died in a similar fashion in the same place just a month before.

Here are the statement from Music City News Media & Marketing. No date and location has been announced.

"To complement formal family arrangements, preliminary plans are being made by Mindy's 'friends in music' to organize a memorial in Nashville in the coming days,"

Meanwhile, friends, acquaintances and other entertainers continued to relate their sympathies and memories of the 37-year-old mother of two.

Why do people get sick during summer?

Summer is near and we all know that many of us can get sick during this time. You get sick because of a combination of factors:

-Change of venue – like travelling to a new city
-Cramped public spaces – airplanes , buses , subways , classrooms
-Parties – especially with lots of handshaking and other touching
-Being around new people or else friends and family who are sick.

-Lack of sleep
-A period of high stress
-Poor nutrition
-Allergies
-A breakup or other difficult personal situation
-Travel , moving , trips
-Other illness

Transition periods, such as the end of a school year , are very common times to get sick because so many stresses and changes are in play. Take note that weather plays almost no role in catching cold, other than whatever influence it has on the likelihood that you are indoors in cramped spaces.

Try these tips: Avoid midday sun( stay out of the sun between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm when the sun's rays are strongest.) Ray Lewis III is part of Miami

For Ray Lewis going to Miami has been safe assumption since the day he was born. He was one of 11 players to send letters of intent back to Miami and joining a group of five more early enrollees in a class that the hurricanes think can make an immediate impact. Early Wednesday with his father at his side he sent his letter of intent.

Miami landed several of its top targets even with the incredibly long NCAA investigation into the school's athletic compliance practices still unresolved.

The NCAA was poised to send the Hurricanes their notice of allegations a couple weeks ago - then, in a bizarre twist, ordered an external inquiry into how its own investigators collected information. At the center of that external probe is the NCAA's relationship with attorney Maria Elena Perez, who represented convicted Ponzi scheme architect and whistle-blowing former booster Nevin Shapiro.
Perez has not divulged the nature of her contractual relationship with the NCAA, and NCAA President Mark Emmert wants to know why one existed. Shapiro is serving a 20-year prison term for masterminding a $930 million Ponzi scheme, and the claims he made in an article published by Yahoo Sports have hung precariously over the program for more than two years.
