Can Jay Gruden fix Robert Griffin III

It was an interestingly timed revelation from Jay Gruden.

On Tuesday, the former Bengals offensive coordinator went on a Cincinnati sports radio show to discuss the team’s wild-card loss to San Diego as well as the 2011 NFL draft, where the Bengals drafted Andy Dalton over Colin Kaepernick, who went to the 49ers one pick later in the second round.

Much of the discussion stemmed from a Cincinnati Enquirer story several days earlier, where Bengals owner Mike Brown stated that he wanted to select Kaepernick, but that Gruden convinced him otherwise, noting that Dalton “fits what I want to do.” Head coach Marvin Lewis’ role in the decision wasn’t specified and the story ended up making both Gruden and Brown look bad after Dalton’s dud of a game (his third straight one in the playoffs) later that afternoon.
Gruden didn’t disagree with Brown’s recollection during the show, explaining that he felt Dalton was most ready to start as a rookie and that there were questions about Kaepernick’s passing accuracy.

Then there was this statement: “I also wasn’t really into the read-option stuff and it wasn’t really that popular at the time.”

Could her birthday wish be to get back together with Ian?!

Or maybe she just wants to keep it at innocent pecks on the cheek? SRSLY we hope that by the end of her birthday celebrations, Nina dressed down into just her birthday suit with Ian. LOLz!

James Franklin the right man – and perfect coach – for Penn State

James Franklin wasn't a good hire for Penn State. A good hire, if flawed, would've been Al Golden.

James Franklin wasn't a great hire for Penn State. A great hire, if not going to happen, would've been a big-time proven winner like Mike Gundy or Mark Dantonio.
James Franklin was neither a good hire, nor a great one.
James Franklin was perfect.
Just as Bill O'Brien was the right guy at the right time to replace Joe Paterno after the Jerry Sandusky scandal, James Franklin is the right guy at this time to replace O'Brien. Major difference between the two is this: We had no idea O'Brien was the right guy two years ago.

Who knew? He had never been a head coach, had actually flamed out at his last job in college -- as offensive coordinator at Duke, his teams averaged less than 17 points in 2005 and '06 -- and then had spent a few years with Bill Belichick at New England. Hey, everybody looks good under Belichick. Even Charlie Weis.

So who knew O'Brien was going to be the right mixture of leadership, focus, coaching and recruiting for Penn State? Who knew he was the perfect hire in January 2012? Not me. And not you.

Wrestling legend Mea Young Not Dead but gravely ill

WE Hall of Fame wrestler Mae Young is gravely ill ... BUT NOT DEAD ... this according to local reports.

Young -- the only wrestler to compete in NINE DIFFERENT DECADES (her first match in 1939; her last in 2010) -- was hospitalized and placed on life support in South Carolina last month.

The
Post and Courier initially reported 90-year-old Young passed away, but later updated the story ... saying the wrestling legend is alive but very sick.

Mae and fellow pioneer female wrestler
The Fabulous Moolah returned to the WWE back in 1999 -- when they were both in their 70s -- and were involved in numerous iconic moments like being powerbombed through a table by the Dudley Boyz ... and the birth of "hand."

Ranking the 15 BCS national champions

No. 1 Florida State vs. No. 2 Auburn marks the 16th and final BCS National Championship Game. USA TODAY Sports' Paul Myerberg ranks the champions from the past 15 years:
15. 2007 LSU (12-2): LSU is the only team in the BCS era to lose two games and win the national championship. That's impressive, but it's also a reason to put the Tigers low on this list.
14. 2002 Ohio State (14-0): The Buckeyes didn't win pretty. OSU pulled out several late comebacks during the regular season and needed overtime to beat Miami (Fla.) to win the championship, but there's something to be said of a team with the mental toughness needed to win close game after close game.

Samsung set to expand curved Ultra HD line

Samsung is making a straight pitch for curved Ultra HD TVs.
In addition to showing off its mammoth 105-inch curved Ultra HD display here at the Consumer Electronics Show, the TV and electronics giant announced plans for 55-inch, 65-inch and 78-inch curved UHD sets (no prices, later this year).
Samsung's curved displays deliver "even more lifelike picture quality with more depth," said HS Kim, executive vice president of the visual display business at Samsung Electronics. He compared the experience to 3-D and IMAX. "You can feel that effect."
Ultra HD, which offers four times the resolution of current HDTVs, will get more attention from Samsung, too, in 2014. In addition to the previously announced 110-inch UHD display, new sizes run from 50 inches to 75. "It is very clear that UHD is a technology for the future," Kim said.
The company also announced plans to add streaming Ultra HD content through its Smart Hub; partners include Amazon, M-GO, Netflix, Comcast and DirecTV.

TTC and GO Transit prepare for extreme weather conditions

Both TTC and GO Transit are bracing for yet another bout of extreme weather this evening and tomorrow morning.
Winter is playing havoc with the operations of the two transit agencies, with delays and closures effecting service as temperatures continue to dip.
Despite the windchill warning from Environment Canada issued Monday, Jan. 6,, which is forecasting gusts reaching 70 kilometres per hour, TTC spokesperson Brad Ross said no advisories are currently in place for this afternoon’s commute.
But with an extreme cold weather alert overnight, he said transit riders should be prepared for service delays Tuesday morning, Jan. 7, as was the case last Friday when 50 streetcars were pulled out of service because of frigid temperatures.
With aging streetcars reaching more than three decades of operation, extremely cold weather can result in the freezing up of air lines controlling brake and door operations, said Ross.
The streetcar fleet is showing its age,” he wrote in an email. “There isn’t anything we can do to prevent extreme cold, but we will have plans in place to supplement service with buses if needed, much like we did Friday afternoon.”
He said the new Bombardier streetcars ordered by the TTC to begin running on at least one route later this year, are not expected to have this issue.
Since the calendar was flipped to 2014, weather-related delays have also become almost a daily occurrence for GO riders.

A 'polar vortex' is causing our woes , but what the heck is it?

An Arctic air mass known as a "polar vortex" has descended over much of Canada and the eastern and mid-west U.S., causing temperatures to plunge, nearing -50 C with the wind chill in some regions.
But what exactly is a polar vortex and how does it work? Here are four polar vortex questions answered:

1) What is a polar vortex?
A polar vortex is a large, frigid air mass located near the Earth's geographical poles. The vortex is continually circulating a pool of cold air in a counter-clockwise direction. As the air is being circulated in place, it grows colder and denser.

2) Where is the polar vortex?
On Earth, the vortex hovers around the Arctic, with two centres: one near Canada's Baffin Island and the other near Siberia.

3) Why is the polar vortex making this winter in particular so cold?
While it's normal for the some of the vortex's frigid air to leach southward during the winter, this year has proved to be exceptional.
Dan Riddle, senior meteorologist with the U.S. National Weather Service, told CTV News Channel that the vortex is normally present over Baffin Island and north-central Canada for the winter, with the cold air building up over time.
But this year the jet stream has dipped far south, dragging a "piece" of the vortex with it through the U.S. prairies and beyond, he said.
Riddle said the effects of the vortex are being felt as far south as New Orleans, La. and Tallahassee, Fla., where temperatures are dropping to levels not seen in 30 years.

4) How common is it to have a polar vortex descend south like this year?
Riddle said historical records indicate that outbreaks of unusually cold weather have occurred in U.S. in the past, with a frequency of about one every 20 years.
Some scientists have begun to study whether there is a link between the effects of climate change -- including the melting of the polar ice caps -- and extreme weather events.
"There is a lot of thought about the changes that have been going on in the Arctic and if that has caused colder weather to be displaced further south," Riddle told CTV News Channel.

WestJet load factor inches down to 81.7%

WestJet Airlines Ltd. flights took off with a slightly greater proportion of empty seats in December compared with a year ago as the airline grew its capacity.
The airline said it had a load factor or 81.7 per cent, down from 81.9 per cent a year ago.
Passenger traffic grew 7.2 per cent last month compared with last year, while capacity increased 7.4 per cent.

For the full year, WestJet reported a load factor of 81.7 per cent, down from 82.8 per cent in 2012. Capacity increased 8.6 per cent, while passenger traffic increased 7.3 per cent.
"We are very pleased to finish the year with our second-highest fourth quarter and full-year load factors," WestJet president and chief executive Gregg Saretsky said in a statement.

The increase in capacity came as WestJet launched a regional service called WestJet Encore, which flies to smaller communities using Bombardier's Q400 turboprops.

The regional airline started flying in Western Canada this year and plans to launch in Toronto next summer.

49ers lead Packers at halftime at cold Lambeau Field

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has a history -– albeit a short one -– of terrorizing the Green Bay Packers with his athleticism and versatility. Kaepernick is again showcasing those strengths this afternoon at Lambeau Field, sparking the 49ers to a 13-10 halftime lead.
But the Packers have their own playmaking quarterback. And with Aaron Rodgers beginning to heat up, a back-and-forth first-round NFC playoff showdown in Green Bay could go down to the wire with both quarterbacks looking to produce in the clutch.
Late in the first half, with pressure coming, Kaepernick delivered the game’s longest gain so far, tucking and bolting though an opening up the middle. The third-year quarterback’s speed left a horde of Packer defenders in his wake and produced a 42-yard run.
Two snaps later, running back Frank Gore took an inside handoff and rumbled 10 yards up the middle for the go-ahead touchdown, putting the 49ers ahead 13-7.
Kaepernick finished the first half 8-for-15 passing for 117 yards while rushing for 47 yards.
Rodgers, meanwhile, led the Packers to scores on their final two possessions of the half. In his first action at Lambeau Field since fracturing his collarbone Nov. 4 against the Chicago Bears, Rodgers delivered a pretty 5-yard touchdown pass to Jordy Nelson with 5:50 left in the second quarter. That capped an impressive 14-play, 70-yard drive after the Packers had gone three-and-out on their first three drives.

Downton Abbey's next series may be its last , hints Julia Fellowes

The creator of Downton AbbeyJulian Fellowes, has hinted that the hit show's next series could be its last.
The ITV drama, telling the story of the aristocratic Crawley family, is to return to screens later this year for the fifth series since its debut in 2010.
But Fellowes has been commissioned to write a new US drama called The Gilded Age and has said in an interview that work on the programme would not start until Downton had come to an end.
Fellowes told the Wall Street Journal: "It's for NBC Universal and it will happen when Downton finishes because I just couldn't do both at once.
"I haven't written it yet, but it's about the old aristocracy, the Winthrops and the Stuyvesants and the new money of oil and gas and shipping in the 1870s. It will all be fiction – it won't be real people – but when those families descended on New York, they took over."
The writer reassured fans that there would be a fifth series of Downton, but added: "I don't know yet if there is a season six, but it's not going to go on for ever. It won't be Perry Mason."
He also speculated that if the Crawleys had been a real family, they would have still been running the estate today – albeit in a more businesslike way.

Super Bowl 2014

This is the Super Bowl where ads may offer a bit less of the same — and a bit more of the unexpected.
As the price of ad time continues to escalate, advertisers continue to seek new ways — and new reasons — to stand out or even surprise. At a record $4 million per 30-second slot, "it's the most expensive ad time on television by a wide margin," says Jon Swallen, chief research officer at Kantar Media.
The Super Bowl, he notes, "marches to a very different beat than the rest of the TV business." And so, too, must the advertisers who want to stand out during the Feb. 2 broadcast on Fox, which is sold out of ad time.
